The SmartWeld App files are the result of a Sandia National Laboratories collaborative project (1993-
2011) with principal investigators Phillip Fuerschbach (philmar@q.com) and Richard Eisler
(roenrick@msn.com). For further information about SmartWeld visit: http://smartweld.sourceforge.net/

The MATLAB license that was used to create SmartWeld limits some rights of deployment but permits
the distribution of the SmartWeld exe file and the MCR installer to unlicensed third parties: “Licensee
may use and distribute the MCR Libraries for the sole purpose of running Licensed User's Application
generated by the MATLAB Compiler. Licensee may deploy, at no cost, copies of such Applications that
incorporate the MCR Libraries and compiled versions of MATLAB code files from the licensed Programs
required for the Application. No further fees shall be due to MathWorks for such deployment within such
Applications, regardless of whether the Application is distributed solely for Licensee's Internal Operations
or to Third Parties” MATLAB. (c) 1984 – 2010 The MathWorks, Inc."
System Requirements
SmartWeld Standalone App and M files were both generated with MATLAB release 2010A. System
requirements include Windows 7, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows XP x64 Edition Service Pack 2,
Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or 2, and Windows Server 2008
Service Pack 2 or R2. The 64 bit MATLAB MCRinstaller is not operable with the current version of
SmartWeld. Most applications run very quickly on a regular PC. However, a PC with a fast processor is
best since some of the weld procedure applications can take a few minutes to complete.

Quick Installation Steps
1. Store the SmartWeld.exe application wherever you want on your computer but keep the three
logos, and the OutputFiles folder together with it.
2. Since installing the MCR requires write access to the system registry, ensure you have
administrator privileges to run the MCR Installer.
3. Click to run the installer. When the MCR Installer wizard appears, click Next to begin the
installation. Click Next to continue.
4. Enter your name and organization.
5. In the Select Installation Folder dialog box, specify where you want to install the MCR. Click Next
to continue. Confirm your selections by clicking Next. The installation begins. The process takes
some time due to the large quantity of files that are installed.
6. When the installation completes, click Close on the “Installation Completed” dialog box to exit.
7. Installation is then complete, the System paths are set automatically in Windows.
8. Don’t discard the installer, it is unique to this version of SmartWeld, and you will need it to run
SmartWeld on other computers.
9. To run subsequent versions of SmartWeld, you can download the latest SmartWeld.exe file
separately from the SmartWeld files page at SourceForge.
Run SmartWeld
a) The standalone executable is called SmartWeld.exe. Double click this file and wait 15 seconds
for the application to start.
b) After the SmartWeld logo is flashed a Copyright notice will be displayed, click the accept button
to launch the application menu.
c) A blue menu bar will next be displayed which contains the individual buttons to start each of the
welding applications.
d) The black command window will remain in the background, you can minimize it, but don’t close
it or SmartWeld will close.
e) Hold the cursor over each button to read a brief description of each application.
f) A single mouse click on the button will start the application.
g) Notice that each application has its own Help file specific to that app with details about the
layout, input specification, and results.
h) To close one application and enter another you must use the "EXIT' button.
i) In the course of running SmartWeld, the Output Files folder will accumulate output files from
the various applications. This folder can be cleaned out, but should not be deleted, nor should
its name be changed.
