O n the 5th November, forty people came to our first Community Lunch at the

thought the meal was delicious.”

‘Histry Bits’.... The Best Fun Ever
I was reminiscing with my brother Paul and my cousin John in the Duck, recently, and
they both agreed with me that we’d had an incredible childhood. Once school was out
the three of us had total freedom to patrol more than six hundred mud-splashed rain-
soaked, sun-drenched acres, and as long as we didn’t do any serious damage nobody
asked any questions about what we got up to.
It was beyond brilliant - but it wasn’t the best. Because nothing - absolutely nothing -
could match the day in early December when the Mr. Palmer’s threshing tackle lum-
bered to a halt outside the farm gates. Sadly, we three boys were too young to remember
the huge traction engines with their spinning flywheels and hissing steam. By the time
we came on the scene they had all been scrapped or sent to museums to be replaced by
the Field Marshall, a squat, green and distinctly unglamorous diesel tractor known as a
Pop-Pop, after the loud farting noises it
made. Coupled behind it was a wooden grain A Field
elevator and the threshing drum, a rectangu- Marshall
lar box-like structure, festooned with chutes Tractor
and hoppers. Speeding along on our bikes, nick-named
we followed the rumbling procession to the Pop - Pop
corner of the field where the barley stack
was due to be threshed and, gripping our
rabbiting sticks, we waited impatiently as the
machinery was set up. After what seemed an
eternity, the Pop-Pop let out a particularly
loud fart and its drive wheel spun into motion, powering the elevator which hoisted the
sheaves of barley up to the men on the drum, where their bindings were cut and they
were fed into the machine.
As the day wore on, the barley stack shrank until it was a fraction of its original size.
After what seemed an eternity, the Pop-Pop driver raised his arm and the machinery
ground to a halt. Only a few feet of un-threshed barley remained where the original stack
had stood. With the unfamiliar silence ringing in our ears, we watched as two of the farm
hands unwound a large bundle of chicken wire and used it to encircle the stack. While
they were doing it, a dozen or so people arrived from the village to join us. Several of
them had dogs - Jack Russells or similar small terriers - straining at their leashes. Grip-
ping our rabbiting sticks and with our hearts pounding, we joined them as they spread
out around the perimeter of the wire fence. When everybody was in position, the men on
the stack gave a loud shout and plunged their pitchforks into the straw at their feet,
throwing it high into the air.
It was the signal for utter pandemonium to break loose. Rats, more rats than we boys had
ever seen before, exploded from the stack and, desperate to escape, hurled themselves at
the wire fence. Unable to break through, they swung back. But the men with their pitch-
forks were waiting for them, forcing them into a corner. Now it was the dogs’ turn. Un-
leashed by their owners, and seemingly unconcerned with their own safety, they flung
themselves at the seething mass of rodents, crippling them with a single bite to the neck,
before throwing their writhing, twitching corpses aside and racing for more victims.
Some of the rats fought back, sinking their teeth the dogs’ muzzles, but there was no
escape and they were flung free. In less than fifteen minutes the battle was over.
And what about us boys? I’d like to boast that we killed dozens of rats with our trusty
sticks. But the truth is, we didn’t. As the demented animals raced towards us, we lost
our nerve and scrambled back over the wire fence, just in time. But it was good country
fun - the very best! David Miller

Gert & Daisy.... .... Well, thas nearly here!
Hope yew’ve dun awl your shopping. We hint med a start yit. Bin far tew busy.
We started playing the handbells agin down the chuch. There wus a few new faces that

We are hoping to dew a quiz fer the Firemen in December– we will dew anything fer the

We hev ter congratulate Edna Sillis on her 90 th birthday larst month. She is such a luvly
lady who don’t look no different ter how she did when she ran the Swan pub with her
husband Bo. Her family organised a surprise tea party fer her. Gert and Bert were lucky
enuf ter be invited. It wus a really luvly afternoon and there wus several of Gert’s old
school friends there so she wus able to hev a catch up and a trip down memory lane.
Happy Birthday, Edna!
Sid hev bin on his annual holiday away from Daisy – don’t know who enjoyed it most!
He went with Malcolm and half of Massingham ter Weston-super-mare. Apparently,
they awl hed a gud toime but can’t remember some of it – wonder why?
We were very sorry to hear that Wendy Longhurst lost her long, brave battle with cancer
– she was far too young to go. Our thoughts are with her husband and all her family at
this very sad time.
We were very sad to hear that dear Dr Welbourne has also died at the age of 95. He was
the doctor when we had our children and when they were growing up so we both have a
great fondness for him. Our thoughts are with his wife, Barbara and all their family at
this sad time.
We would like to say the Church Christmas Fair was very good but unfortunately, as we
write this on the 18th and it doesn’t happen until the 30th, we can’t! We reckon that’ll be
very gud though and if we ken remember we will report on it next toime!
We wud loike ter say ‘well done’ ter Sandy and Max who organised the fust community
lunch. It wus a great success – roll on the next one. We hev spoken ter a lot of people
who went and they awl sed what an enjoyable toime they hed – luvly food and great
company. A great idea ter bring people tergether. Gert’s mum sat with people who are
members of Slimming World and a Fat Club and she wus amazed at how many desserts
they cud eat on these diets! Gert and her mum are thinking of joining a similar club.
We hev hed so much rain this month but we are very lucky compared with those poor
people who hev bin flooded in other parts of the country. The pits are full but hold-
ing it awl at the moment thank goodness.
Don’t forget ter let us know if yew hev any gossip yewd loike us ter share! Don’t
forget ter keep an eye on any elderly neighbours and help them when yew ken.
Christmas especially can be a lonely time if you’re on your own.

Great Massingham Parish Council
The Future of our Village
Are you concerned about your village, and would you like to have more of a
say in how it may develop over the next ten years or more? Do you feel that nobody
stands a chance to influence things with decisions made outside the village and local
views not taken into account? That money talks, and that rules seem to be changing to
allow more and more development?
In 2011, new legislation was passed to allow communities to work with Borough Coun-
cils to control the development of their locality, a process formally known as a
‘Neighbourhood Plan’. Six local Parish Councils have already completed the process.
Great Massingham Parish Council has consulted with other Parish Councils and Kings
Lynn Borough Council to understand more thoroughly what is required.
It has to be driven by the Parish Council but consultation must occur with all Parishion-
ers and organisations associated with the village with the final stage of the process being
a referendum in the village, before the Neighbourhood Plan is adopted.
With a Plan Without a Plan
The Village has more control over its future. All major decisions are taken elsewhere.

Although the Parish Council drives the process, most Neighbourhood Plans are put to-
gether by teams of Parishioners and Parish Councillors. The process can take up to two
years, so a level of commitment is necessary. If you are interested in getting involved, the
Parish Council would be very interested to hear from you. For reference, completed
Neighbourhood Plans can be viewed on the Borough Council website. If you have any of
the following skills then you could be helpful to a Neighbourhood Planning team:-
• Communication and listening
• IT data analysis, and project management.
• Previous local government or planning experience
• Knowledge or participation of local organisations, clubs or businesses.
Contact either Parish Clerk, Parish Council Chair (numbers on page 15) or
Parish Councillors Jon Cole (07990 705 113) and Peter James (521 706).
The Parish Council’s decision of whether to go ahead with a Neighbourhood Plan will
be influenced by the level of interest from the Parish. It would like to hear your views.
Details of an open meeting for the future will be published in the next Mallard.

Message from Reverend Judith
StirTup A wills
O the LL P ofARISHIONERS
your faithful people...
For the first time in years, my husband suggested that we do some Christmas
baking, make a fruit cake and perhaps a plum pudding or two. After all, next
week it’s Stir up Sunday!
Traditionally, Stir Up Sunday is the last Sunday before Advent (a penitential season) and
like Shrove Tuesday before Lent it was customary to use up rich ingredients beforehand.
Also, the special prayer for that Sunday began with the words: “Stir up we beseech thee
O Lord, the wills of Thy faithful people..”. Of course, folk made up their own version:
Stir up, we beseech thee the pudding in the pot...and keep it hot! Tradition has it that
making Christmas fare on Stir Up Sunday brings good luck – and it gives the food time
to mature and develop flavour all ready for Christmas.
At this time of the year we have a Children’s Workshop at Harpley Church: Birthday
cakes for Jesus! We stir up all the ingredients, bake them (not in church!) and later at a
second workshop we ice the cakes creatively in time for Christmas. We all have a lot of
fun doing this, children and adults alike.
It’s good to think of safe and predictable things in the run-up to Christmas 2019 – carol
services, present-buying, decorating the tree - to counterbalance the uncertainty in our
United Kingdom at this time. As we still experience the political contortions of Brexit
and approach a December General Election for the first time since 1923, even if we look
beyond our shores to the wider world, all we see is unrest and division. There is no
peace, no goodwill. We are challenged on all sides, particularly in the way we abuse our
planet and its resources. Members of my own wider family have been active in the cli-
mate change protests in London, fervently believing that we all have a stake in the quali-
ty of life of future generations – and we must do something positive now, before it’s too
late.
The annual reassertion of our Christian faith at Christmas through the birth of Je-
sus, the Christ-child, comes at an important time. Every year this Christian festi-
val, this celebration of love, vulnerability and sheer humanity, reminds us that in
all this earthly turmoil we are not alone. God loves us so much that he sent his Son
to be with us to experience our human predicament in all its gritty reality - even to
death on a cross. The story of our redemption begins at Christmas.
Never have we needed more the message of the angels: Peace on earth, goodwill to
all people. As Charles Dickens’ Tiny Tim observed: “God bless us, every one!”
Happy Christmas to you all, Reverend Judith.

Anyone for Tea?
The Village Stores & Deli has a Plan.
Plans are progressing with the Tea Room
and, whilst up to this point progress has
been challenging, we are hopeful of
launching on or around Christmas/ January time.
The tea room now has a name and identity which we
will reveal in due course and thanks go out to several
of our customers, including Ant Robinson for your
historical detective work as an inspiration!
We will keep everyone up to date in - store and online through our website
www.massinghamstores.co.uk and our facebook and instagram channels.
As recently mentioned in one of our social media posts, we are trying very hard to launch
with as many eco-credentials as we can and, at this stage, they include: a water re-fill
station, compostable, recyclable, biodegradable takeaway coffee cups, electric car charg-
ing points and a generous cycle rack for the keen cyclists out there. Also, we will work
extremely hard at keeping our plastic usage to an absolute minimum with a target of zero
if it’s possible. Also coming soon, in-store, tea room gift vouchers which could make an
ideal gift for somebody this Christmas. Mark & Kerry
