Reflection from prior lessons: This class section can be very talkative and energetic. Some of the
students will stay focused throughout the lesson and work time, while others will need reminders to
stop talking or stay focused. They usually calm down after one or two reminders. There is one student
who sometimes refuses to work. This is a very fun group to work with. They enjoy talking about the
concepts of this class like financing, budgeting, and spending; but do not enjoy doing the math. This is
the first lesson of a reviews for the semester test while I did not teach this chapter the classroom
teacher says that they did well with it.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

Goals:
Students will review how to calculate the new balance of a checkings account
Students will review how to calculate simple interest when it relates to a saving account.
Students will review important words such as Withdrawal, Simple Interest, and Savings
Account

Standards:
7.NS.3 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations.
7.EE.3 Solve Multi-step real life and mathematical problems posed with positive and

operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate;
and assess the resonances of answers using both mental computations and calculations

When given words related to a savings account and their definitions students will be able to
accurately match the vocabulary word with its definition with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed:
Smartboard/powerpoint
Calculator
Note books
Chromebooks

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

This class section can be very talkative and energetic. Some of the students will stay focused throughout
the lesson and work time, while others will need reminders to stop talking or stay focused. During the
beginning of the class they are usually very energetic and need to be calmed down.

A. The Lesson (50min)

1. Introduction (5min)
a. Once all the students are in class and have gotten out their needed materials we will go
over our bellringer.
i. What do you have to do to prepare for the semester test?
1. Student responses will vary but they should say something like paying
attention in class, completing the reviews, taking any notes that I
missed when we first went over each chapter, studying.
b. Next we will go over what students will need to know for chapter 5 on their semester
test.
i. Calculating subtotal and total deposit
ii. Writing numbers in word form
iii. Calculating the new balance of an account
iv. Calculating simple interest
v. Vocab
1. Content Delivery (20min)
a. We will start by going over the vocab for this chapter. Who encourage students to look
through their notes from chapter 5 to make sure that they have all the vocab words
written down or to put them in their notes if they didn't do it the first time.
i. Withdrawal: Money taken out of a bank account
ii. Simple Interest: Interest paid only on the original principal
iii. Savings Account: A specific kind of savings account that earns interest
iv. Interest: The amount of money paid for the use of a lender’s money
v. Account Statement: A bank statement that shows the status of your account,
including deposits, withdrawals from, and interest earned
vi. Principal: The amount of money earning interest
vii. Compound Interest: Interest earned not only on the original principal but also
on the interest earned during previous interest periods
b. I will then go through and do one to two examples of each of the different types of
problems the students will have to do on their review. If students need more instruction
on how to complete a problem I will walk them through an example on their review
one-on-one. I will encourage students to take notes in their notebooks to help them.
i. Write each amount in words
1. $27.73
a. Twenty-seven and 73/100 dollars
2. $326.50
a. Three-hundred twenty-six 50/100 dollars
ii. Finding the subtotal and total deposit
Deposits Subtotal Less Cash Received Total Deposit

$38.90 a. 94.19 $0.00 B. 94.19

$34.28
$21.01

$184.66 a. 335.70 $50.00 B. 285.70

$54.76
$96.44

iii. Finding the new balance of an account

New Balance = Previous Balance + Interest + Deposits - Withdrawals
1. What is the new balance if the previous balance was $850.25, interest
was $4.02, the deposit was $125.44, and the withdrawal was $150.00.
a. 850.25 + 4.02 + 125.44 - 150.00= $829.71
2. Seth’s account shows that his account has a previous balance of $284.95
and interest of $1.06. Deposits were $123.42 and $50.66 and
withdrawals of $323.09. What’s the new balance?
a. 284.95 + 1.06 + 123.42 + 50.66 - 323.09= 137

iv. Calculate simple interest and the amount.

Simple Interest = principal x rate x time
1. $932 invested at 5% for 3 years
a. 923 x 5% x 3= $138.45
b. 923 + 138.45= $1061.45
2. $635.95 invested at 7% for 5 years
a. 635.95 x 7% x 5= $222.58
b. 635.95 + 222.58= $858.53

c. Work time (20min)

i. The students will have the rest of the class time to work on their review
assignment on google classroom.
1. As they work, I will walk around the room and stop to assist students as
needed.
2. If students finish the assignment before class is out they will have time
to work on any late or missing assignments, if they have any. Otherwise
they can read a book, relax, or work on other homework.

1. Closure (5min)
a. At the end of class time we will play a review game to review the vocabulary for this
chapter.
i. Students will play a kahoot to see how well they know their vocab for this
chapter. Students will be able to use their notebooks to help them.

B. Assessments Used
1. Review: After students complete the review assignment the google for with automatically grade
it for them. If time allows I will student thought any problems they get wrong duir class time. If
there are any problems where for the 25% of the student get wrong I will go through it the
following day at the beginning of class. If students would life to redo the review they will not be
able to do corrections but can redo the review after looking through their notes and walking
through the problems they got wrong with me. This will be due the following day.
2. Vocab game: Are we use this to see how well the students know the vocabulary for this chapter.
I will also use it to reinforce that schemes need to be looking at their vocabulary for all of the
chapters because it will be a big part of the semester test.
3. Observation: During the lesson and work time, I will be observing students and looking for
students who are paying attention, completing calculations, and are working on the assignment.
Once students have completed the assignment and any missing or alte work they will be able to
be on their phones or chromebooks as long as they are not distracting others. They should not
have these otu during the lesson of the beginning of work time.

C. Differentiated Instruction
1. High Flyers: I will reply on my high flyers to lead the conversation during the bell ringer and exit
ticket. I will also rely on them to help their peers who are struggling.
2. Strugglers: For the students who may be struggling with this lesson I will help them get through
the assignment and lesson one-on-one during work time. I will encourage them to take notes
while we are working on the problems together so they can more easily follow along and
understand when I am not there. I will rephrase my instructions and explanations as needed.
