Fishing hub @ Thondi

Introduction:
A fishing hub is an integrated zone which includes the fishing harbor,
fish sales zone, fish processing zone, boat maintenance and service
area, information centre, recreational space and amenities.
A fishing harbor is a platform along the sea which holds the fishing
boats and small catamarans. The fish is transferred from boats and
transported to various places for various purpose. The sales of fish also
happens along the platform along the coast.
The fish processing units for dried fish, canning, chilled fish, frozen
products, fish oil and fish meals is also included.
Design of fishing hub could be beneficial in certain aspects-
- Easy and organized processing and transportation of fish can take
place.
- Reduce the wastage and time for transportation of fish for various
purposes.
- Easy maintenance of waste and disposal.
- Provide opportunities for fisherman and reduce the work and loss
faced by them

Aim:
To design a fishing hub with integrated fishing harbor and fish
processing areas at thondi.

Objectives:
 - To identify an appropriate site for the fishing harbor and
processing units.
- Understanding the functioning and methods of fish processing
and translating it into built form.
- To increase the industrial growth by giving proper potential
factors
- To assess infrastructure available and required for the fish
production and processing.
- Integrating various production and processing units at one place
to enhance the functioning.

Context:
The proposed fishing hub can be located in Thondi which is situated in
Ramanathapuram district.
- Thondi is identified as one of the suitable sites for harbor
construction by the fisheries department.
- The regions around thondi posses immense fish production
potential and provide plenty of opportunity to fisherman.
- A minor fisheries harbor is present which could hold only 56
trawlers.
- Harbor has only one ice plant and cold storage plant (not in use)
which is inadequate.
- East coast road (ecr) passes via thondi which connects it with
other cities and helps in easy transportation.
- Excess fish is transported to nearby cities and ports for processing
and export as there is no facility.
- One of the ancient ports used by Pandyas, Cheras and British for
export and import and has a historical value.
- Identified safe even during the tsunami with no loss of lives and
property.
- Thondi comes under thiruvadanai taluk in which 3074 boats are
used for fishing which includes motorized and non-motorized
boats.

Scope of the project:
A usual fishing harbor functions for the platform to hold the fishing
boats and transportation, sale and auctioning of fish. The other
processing activities happen in other places for which the fish is
transported. This leads to wastage of fish due to transportation and
time delay.
Providing an integrated fishing hub with a harbor and processing
units at a single place can enhance the efficiency of the functioning
of the fishing harbor and processing facilities.
