TEXES Competencies

Competency 001:
The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge to plan
instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their
developmental characteristics and needs.
 The teacher understands and recognizes each child’s individual development differences
in emotional, physical, and social developments. Also, recognizes developmental delays
and implements motivation and encouragement for better development. Children’s
emotions and developmental scale at a young age are unpredictable and it is important for
the teacher to be attentive to all developmental needs of the children.

Competency 002:
The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning experiences and
design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that promote all
students’ learning.
 It is important in accepting and respecting each child and their diverse backgrounds and
cultural needs. To make all children feel as comfortable, important, and safe as possible
to ensure the best learning experience for them. To adapt any and all lesson plans as
needed for students with any disabilities.

Competency 003:
The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction and
assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.
 It is important for all educators to understand and implement the Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills to be better prepared for each grade. Each subject and lesson has
different procedures and objective, and it is important that the educator understands each

to ensure that all students are gaining as much as knowledge as possible from the lesson.
That the lesson is clear and precise with directions, rules and instruction for better
performance of the students.

Competency 004:
The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning and
demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate
assessments.
 Each child has a different learning process and time in understanding the material. It is
imperative that the teacher notices and understands each child’s learning process and
accommodates accordingly to them. The teacher also needs to make correct and direct
assessments of the students to make sure they are understanding the material and to
approach new lesson planning as needed.

Competency 005:
The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity and
excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe
and productive.
 A safe, nurturing, and enthusiastic teacher and classroom are so important in early
childhood education. To have a classroom that exerts unique characteristics of the
students and encourages higher creative thinking, children want to learn more and are
productive. Children mimic the atmosphere and attitude of their teacher and the
classroom environment.

Competency 006:
The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning
environment and for managing student behavior.
 In order to have a successful classroom and learning environment for the students, it is
important for the teacher to have established routines. Examples, like having “centers” in
the classroom. Designated areas for students to read, work on math problems, or “chill
out” areas are all great for an effective learning environment. The teacher needs to be
aware to all student and classroom behavior at all time and to act accordingly to
situations.

Competency 007:

The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in
varied teaching and learning contexts.
 It is important to for students to be able to communicate with the teacher. Whether it be
educational or personal related. The teacher needs to know how to effectively
communicate with the students. Give clear instructions with lessons and work assigned,
examples when teaching a lesson and problem solving.

Competency 008:
The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the learning
process.
 Young children get easily side tracked and bored. The teacher needs to make sure to
incorporate learning into the lesson that is fun and attentive for the students. Provides
criteria that is easily understood by the appropriate grade level and promotes student
engagement.
Competency 009:
The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate
instruction for all students.
 Now days in almost all classroom, technology is used in almost every lesson. Whether it
be a projector and computer, a smartboard or even tablets and iPads, its widely used. The
teacher needs to have a basic understanding of all technology in the classroom that they
have access to and how to use it properly. The teacher also needs to help the students
with their technological uses and make sure they are understanding the devise they are
using.

Competency 010:
The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with timely, high-
quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.
 At a young age children are always looking for approval or feedback for adults. As a
teacher it is important to never overlook a child when they are performing well or when
they are not. Always give positive, informative criticism or feedback that helps and
encourage the student to do better, without them feeling like they did a poor job or can’t
do it at all.

Competency 011:

The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education and
knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.
 I believe this is one of the most important aspects in a child life in their education years.
For the teacher to have a relationship of some sort with the student’s family. It also
important for the family to be involved. The teacher needs to reach out as much as
possible to include the families in all that they can be included. The teacher approaches
the family with respect and well informed information about the students, lessons and the
classroom environment.

Competency 012:
The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other
members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional
activities.
 It is important to have a friendly professional relationship with all colleagues, board
members of the district and administration staff. The teacher needs to participate in as
many school functions as possible and help other teachers when needed or asked.
Teachers are role models in the community for students, so it is important to show and
have a good attitude about the school, other teachers and the district.

Competency 013:
The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators and is
knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.
 Being a teacher is more than just “I will not harm this child” or “I will treat all children
equally”. It is also about being ethnically fair and understanding of children from diverse
background, children with disabilities and those who are not in the middle class social
status. The teacher needs to make sure that not only they are adhering to the legal and
ethical requirement from their state, but that the school itself is and other teachers in
regards for the best interest of the students.
