The first Amendment reads as follows “congress shall make no laws

respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise

thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press: or the right of the

people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress

of grievances.”

The first Amendment apples to me in multiply ways. One the biggest being

that a long-term goal of mine is to be a writer for a newspaper or a magazine

so it feels good knowing that there’s is a legal document that allows me to

speak my truth and my peace without legal repercussions.

Being in the Journalism department I truly feel like everyone uses the first

amendment. I Personally put it to use when I write about a touchy or heavily

opinionated topic I can express my opinion freely. Whether it being about

politics or it being about social justice.

I have used the first amendment as a student a lot in one of my previous

classes. this particular class we had a lot of discussions about really sensitive

topics and I can honestly say the teacher in this class was often one-sided

and many of the other students agreed with the teacher on the topics, but I

didn’t I decide to be true to what I believed despite their loud disapproval.
