Making links between Home and Preschool through my Muslim

culture.
21 June 2019. Written by Teacher Liz.

Najma, over the last few weeks I have seen you time trying lots of new activities as you
get more confident at preschool. On the 23rd May you looked like you had fun having a
tea party with Usaid. You sat at the table with the tea set and tried out all the
different plates, cups, pots and play food that were on the table while you watched
Usaid playing with the tea pot.

I watched you push the baby swing by yourself on the 24th May. You walked across the
playground, to your favourite swing. There was no one in it so you started pushing it. I
saw you pushing it gently backwards and forwards. I saw you turn around and look
around the playground as I suggested “you need to be careful of other children running
near you, so they don’t get hit by the moving swing Najma”. You stayed for a long time
pushing the swing and I saw you pushed it harder and higher as you stayed longer.

You had fun at our EID Mubarak party at preschool on the 14th June as you joined in
the party games we played. You joined in a team with lots of other children and waited
for your turn to run down the length of the classroom and throw a bean bag into a hoop.
You seemed unsure about what to do so T Naema encouraged you to “run Najma”. You
stood still so T Naema brought the hoop closer to you and suggested “you can throw
your bean bag into the hoop here”. You still looked unsure so T Naema brought the
hoop to where you were standing and encouraged you to “drop the bean bag into the
hoop”. You dropped the bean bag into the hoop and everyone cheered when you had
done it.

After the party ganmes had finished we all gathered on the mat. You were presented
with a certificate for taking part in the preschool Qu’ ran competition as part of our
Ramadan season. You smiled when Teacher Maysoon handed you with your certificate I
saw you turn to find each child as Teacher Maysoon called their name out to get a
certificate to show that you have tried to learn some surahs from the Holy Book during
the month of Ramadan.

What Learning Occurred?

Najma’s learning pathway for this term is connecting links between home and preschool
in a familiar cultural community. Her natural curiosity helps her to try a range of
activities. Najma is increasing her observation skills as she watches other children use
resources. She is learning ways she can participate at preschool as she becomes more
confident to try new things. Najma is taking responsibility for her own learning by using
her initiative to join in the activities she wants to. She is learning more about her
Muslim faith through participating in the Qu ’ran competition and the EID Party
celebration. Najma is making links between home and preschool as she explores in a
familiar Muslim cultural context at preschool

How can we extend this learning?

We will support Najma as she continues to explore in her familiar cultural context by
facilitating activities based on her Muslim world view and talking with her about her
play based on Muslim values.
