SS CP 11 revised to SS 557 SS 557 - content

1. Scope
In the past - 2. Normative references
• SS CP 11: 2002 Code of Practice for Demolition 3. Definition
• SS CP 11 provided guidelines for safe demolition of 4. Compliance with the authorities’
requirements
structures 5. Development of demolition plan &
stability report
6. Temporary supports
Now -
7. Health & safety considerations
• SS CP 11 had been revised and renumbered as SS • Comprehensive guidelines on
8. Environmental considerations
557:2010 demolition of high-rise
9. Debris & waste handling
10. Methods of demolition
buildings
11. Demolition of stability sensitive
• SS 557 has been incorporated into the Approved structures • To ensure safety through
Document since 1 July 2011 12. Demolition of special structures proper planning & sequential
demolition

Need for change

• Enhance safety management of demolition work

Highlight
• Improve safety standards of demolition works
(A) Demolition plan
• Provides guidelines
(B) Stability report
• demolition of high-rise buildings especially with the use of
machinery. (C) Temporary supports
• preparation of the demolition plan
• stability report (D) Demolition of high-rise building

(E) Waste minimisation & recycling

• Sets criteria for hoarding, covered walkway & catch platform

• Sets criteria for temporary supports

Preparation of Demolition plan

• Purpose

(A) Demolition plan • Understand the hazards to be encountered

• Understand the site constraints

• Understand the conditions of the building structures

• Execute demolition safely in the right sequence

Demolition plan - inputs needed Demolition plan - contents

• Detailed survey of building & surrounding 1. Site plan

• As-built plans (if available) & identification of sensitive 2. Building layout plan
structures
3. Method statement
• Info from building owner on known hazards in, or
around the building 4. Supervision plan

• Examination of the building to ascertain extent of

deterioration (if required)

3
2/25/2014

1. Site plan 2. Building layout plan

• Information to be shown • Information to be shown

• Location of building(s) to be demolished • Design live load

• Detailed topography of site & surrounding • Structural support system, unconventional structural
elements etc
• Details of excavation and/or backfilling
• Principle materials of construction of the as-built
• Distance of building to be demolished to adjacent structure
buildings, street etc
• Neighbouring properties affected by the demolition
works

3. Method statement 4. Supervision plan

• Method statement shall include
• PE should state the stage he would inspect the site
• Procedure & sequence of demolition, demolition method, • timing should coincide with critical stages
types of machine sused etc • e.g. propping requirement, accumulation of
demolition debris
• Safety zones showing allowable routes of movement of
demolition machine, location of temporary ramp etc • Full-time site supervisor for complex building
• High-rise bldg
• Precautionary measures for protection of the public –
• Bldgs in built-up areas
hoardings, covered walkways, protective screen etc
• Structure with limited redundancy
• Bldgs with unbonded prestressed elements
• Shoring & temporary supports

• Methods of handling / disposal / accumulation of debris

Preparation of stability report

• Calculations to show the following:

• Bldg stability during all stages of construction

(B) Stability report • Use of machinery will not affect structural safety, or
cause damage
• Adequacy of temporary support / bracing to
machinery
• Stability of adjacent buildings which may be affected
by the works
• Adequacy of temporary / permanent supports to
adjacent bldgs, if required
• Adequate margin of safety

Provision of temporary supports

• Temporary supports

(C) Temporary supports

1. Scaffolding

2. Shoring & propping

3. Hoarding, covered walkway, catch platform &

catch fan

5
2/25/2014

1. Scaffolding 2. Shoring & propping

• Designed & erected in accordance to BS EN 12811, SS • Designed & erected to SS CP 23

280 & SS CP20
• Table 1, SS 557 gives guidance on propping
• No unplanned removal of scaffold ties requirements when demolition machines are used on
the floor slab
• Debris collected should not exceed scaffold design
loading • Take note of assumptions used in table 1

• Measures to prevent debris from accidentally

dislodging from scaffold

• Scaffold to be removed in a progressive & safe

manner

3. Hoarding, covered walkway, catch platform & 3. Hoarding, covered walkway, catch platform &
catch fan catch fan

• Requirements for • Covered walkway design load

hoarding, covered • 5 kN/m2 for H < 10 sty
walkway, catch • 10 kN/m2 for H > 10 sty
platform & catch fan

• Catch platform / catch fan

• Prescribed design load
requirement based
on bldg height • 5 kN/m2

• Wind load
• 20 m/s basic wind speed
• SS EN 1991-1-4

machine - clause 10.3.1
(D) Demolition of high-rise building
2. Prop requirements to
support demolition machine
– clause 6.2.2

3. Safety zone on limits of

movement of machine –
clause 10.3.1

Essential consideration

4. Temporary ramp for

descent of demolition
machine – clause 10.3.1 (E) Waste minimisation & recycling

5. Sequence of demolition –
clause 10.3.2

6. Hoarding, covered
walkway etc – clause 6.3

7. Monitoring of demolition
works e.g. CCTV – clause
5.3.3

Waste minimisation & recycling

• Need to minimise demolition waste through careful

planning, scheduling & execution of demolition works

• SS 557 gives guidelines to maximise resource recovery

for recycling Thank you
• Pre-demolition audit
• Sequential demolition
• On-site sorting
