RPh of the PH: Breaking the Stigma on Filipino Pharmacists

Rationale: (Marianna and Tele)

Pharmacists have one of the most misunderstood professions in the Philippines. Rather
than being recognized for their crucial role in an effective healthcare system, Filipinos degrade
the responsibilities of Registered Pharmacists (RPh) to one who simply sells medicine form
behind the counter. This creates a stigma – a certain type of discrimination, or negative
mentality that belittles the value and duties of pharmacists. Because of this, many are not aware
of the vast opportunities in pharmacy and overlook it as a career option. The apparent lack of
pharmacists in the country has an adverse effect on the improvement of the Philippine
healthcare system.
The misperception on pharmacists stems from the limited exposure and interactions of
Filipinos with their community pharmacists and how some of these pharmacists act. Often times,
they only get a glimpse of the pharmacist as the pharmacy technicians frontline counters.
This advocacy plan, RPh of the Ph: Breaking the Stigma on Filipino Pharmacists, will
benefit the community, the Philippine healthcare system, and even the pharmacists themselves.
