Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB), a renowned institution under the Ministry of Education Malaysia
is the entity entrusted by the Ministry of Education to deliver educational management and
leadership courses to school leaders and also top management leaders (clients). As a so-called
entity, values such as quality, integrity, respect for the individuals are factors that trigger and
stimulate our clients.

Respect for the individual is an extremely important core value and is intertwined into
everything we do. When another person especially your colleagues, and also your clients has
your respect, they have freedom to perform without the worry of being the subject of gossip and
ridicule. The respected person is also free to be themselves and to live and work within their own
skin without the stress of feeling they have to please everyone around them. They no longer have
the stress of trying to be someone they are not.

Respect will also improve knowledge sharing. A group of respected person automatically begin
to share ideas with each other in an effort to build relationships. As a byproduct, knowledge is
shared and exchanged as mutual respect grows.

We can try to demonstrate respect with various simple actions:

 Empathize to them. Empathy is distinct from sympathy, which is the ability to support
others with compassion. Empathy is the ability to experience and relate to the thoughts,
emotions, or experience of others. Empathy is the ability to step into someone else’s
shoes, be aware of their feelings, and understand their needs. When you empathize with
another person’s experience, you are better able to show respect toward that person.
 Be aware of your body language, the tone of voice, and your demeanor and expression in
all of your interactions at work. People, who are radar machines, are hearing what you're
really saying in addition to listening to your words.
 Treat people the same no matter their race, religion, gender, size, age, or country of
origin. Implement policies and procedures consistently, so people feel that they are
treated fairly and equally.
 Include all lecturers, if possible, in meetings, discussions, training, and events. While not
every person can participate in every activity, do not marginalize, exclude or leave any
one person out.
 Praise much more frequently than you criticize.

Forbes contributor Lisa Quast writes, “respect is something you have to earn – it’s not something
handed out free on a silver platter.”
