Improving Your Leadership skills. Why and how to do it.

How confident are you in your work skills and what you bring to your company? Do you know

the difference between success and failure? Leadership!

The job market is ever growing and is more competitive than ever! With new technology

allowing companies to work abroad and employ people from all over the world, it is imperative

now to stand out. Having the correct leadership skills makes all the difference to moving up and

getting recognized at your place of employment.

Not only does having the correct skills benefit you but your company as well. Companies strive

to create a product or service for the public that is reliable and cost effective; providing that starts

at the bottom with its’ employees and company dynamic. Advancing to the top in one’s chosen

field is also what most people should strive for and having the correct leadership skills helps

reach that goal.

If you are a leader, one of your key responsibilities is to push the people you work with to rise up

to the challenge, help develop them and help create the next generation of leaders. Not everyone

is a natural born leader, but there are certain things one can strive to do and learn to help develop

that skill. Even if you are not in a management position, developing this skill set can result in the

following...

 Help you become more self-reliant and improve your ability to lead yourself better
 Significant performance improvement

 Accountability

 Reflects positively on management and company

 Better at decision making and problem solving

 Confidence in your team

 Helps communicate more effectively

 Helps improve work dynamic

You should first try to understand yourself and analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Ask

yourself where you want to go, what you need to improve on, what your company and peers

need from you and what you can do to increase your work productivity. Develop a strategy that

works for you, practice and apply it.

I will get you started on a few ways you can help yourself or your team become well developed

leaders.

Practice Discipline-

Stay organized, be on top of your tasks, meet your deadlines, keep appointments, communicate

efficiently and be on time. By doing this you will show reliability.

Take Initiative-

Take on more projects, go above your job description, be helpful and available to those around

you. This shows ambition, eagerness and that you are a team player. These skills will help you

get recognized and be valued by your team and executives above you.

Learn to follow-
A good leader should have no problem yielding control to another person when needed. Know

when to ask for help and be open minded to others’ ideas and opinions. If you value and show

respect to your team, they will return the same gratitude and will result in loyal hardworking

peers and employees.

Be aware of how others think and feel-

Knowing this can give you a better understanding to how someone's’ thought process works and

what affects their job performance whether positively or negatively.

Communicate Effectively-

Listen actively, ask questions and take notes. Consider everything someone has to say without

being dismissive. Thank them for their openness even if you disagree. When delegating tasks

make sure the goal is clear and state exactly what you expect from them. This will all result in

less wasted time and a more effective workday. It will also leave the path to communication

open and peers will feel more comfortable going to you if needed.

And lastly, Inspire-

Motivate your team and be enthusiastic. Give praise when warranted so they know their work is

good and appreciated. Encourage them to work well together and be constructive. This will give

them a sense of belonging and make for a better team dynamic.

I hope you all see why applying these skills is important regardless of your position. Everyone

benefits from learning these skills and not only will they help you reach your goals but may

improve your work relationships and daily life.
