Assignment No. 1
Last date of submission of assignment: 25th September 2019

1. The variation of heat capacity for carbon dioxide with temperature is given by the
equation
Cp = 6.34 + 10.15 × 10–3 T – 3.41 × 10–6 T2 CO1
Where, Cp is in cal/gmol.°C and T is in K. Transform the above equation in FPS unit on
mass basis.
2. For an open channel flow down a slope, the flow rate depends on length, area, roughness,
slope, density, viscosity and gravity. Find the functional form for the flow rate using
dimensional analysis.
Q=f (l,A,ε,s, g, ρ,μ) = 0
where
Q = Volumetric flow rate
l = length CO1
A = Area
ε=roughness
s= slope
g = Acceleration due to gravity
ρ= density
μ = Viscosity
3. A gas is composed of 10% Carbon dioxide, 30% water, 40% oxygen and 20% nitrogen by
volume. Estimate the average molecular weight of the gas, composition by weight and the CO2
density of gas at 60 degree Celsius and atmospheric pressure.
4. Aluminum reacts with chlorine gas to form aluminum chloride via the following reaction:
2Al + 3Cl2 → 2AlCl3
How many grams of aluminum chloride could be produced from 34 g of aluminum and CO2
39 g of chlorine gas?
Find Limiting reactant, Excess reactant, % excess reactant ,Yield of aluminum chloride
5. Liquid aluminum is produced by electrolytic reduction of alumina (Al2O3) dissolved in an
electrolyte containing cryolite. The overall reaction is
2 Al2O3 +3C → 4 Al + 3CO2
In a continuous process, it is found that 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide is removed from the CO2
vent.
(a) Calculate the amount of aluminum produced
(b) Calculate the amount of bauxite required. (bauxite contains 72.8% Al)
6. The vapour pressure of a substance is 21 torr at 300K. Calculate the vapour pressure at
CO2
310K if the enthalpy of vaporization is 24 KJ/mol.
7. A 10.20 g sample of a gas has a volume of 5.25 L at 23 °C and 751 mmHg. If 2.30 g of
the same gas is added to this constant 5.25 L volume and the temperature raised to 67 °C, CO2
what is the new gas pressure?
8. A liquid mixture of benzene and toluene contains 55.0% benzene by mass. The mixture is
to be partially evaporated to yield a vapor containing 85.0% benzene and a residual liquid
containing 10.6% benzene by mass. Suppose that the process is to be carried out
continuously and under steady state, with a feed rate of 100.0 kg/h of the 55% mixture. CO4
Let V (kg/h) and L (kg/h) be the mass flow rates of the vapor and liquid product streams,
respectively. Draw and label a process flowchart, and solve for unknown flow rates and
compositions.
9. The feed in a distillation column contains 45% pentane and 55% hexane by mole percent.
The vapor stream leaving the column that contains 98 mole % pentane goes to a total
condenser. Half of that is sent back to column as reflux and the remaining is withdrawn as CO4
product at a rate of 85 kmol/hr. Overhead product contains 95% of pentane fed to the
column. Estimate the composition of bottom stream.
10. To make strawberry jam, strawberries containing 15 wt% solids and 85 wt% water are
crushed. The crushed strawberries and sugar are mixed in a 4/5 mass ratio and the mixture
CO4
is heated to evaporate water. The residue contains one-third water by mass. Calculate the
amounts of strawberries needed to make 100 g of jam, and of evaporated water.
