RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND ARCHITECTURE

From times immemorial Man has been finding ways to express his inner feelings, has been working relentlessly to find new
ways of communication if he used Art to express and Communicate, he also used Architecture to express and communicate
albeit indirectly. This intrinsic need of the man to express and communicate has brought Art and architecture together. As
man has found that these two fields have so much in common and have the capacity to compliment and enhance each
other’s qualities that he mixed them up so beautifully that at times it becomes so difficult to distinguish where Art ends and
where Architecture begins and vice versa. If caves were the earliest of Architectural evidences then Cave Art was very much a
part of it. Man was constantly trying evolve his built environment and art was his companion throughout. The Great Egyptian
pyramids, The Extravagant Roman castles, Early Christian era Churches, Islamic Structures or The Hindu Temples all of them
are standing testimonies to the integration of Art and Architecture.

As both Art and Architecture deal with visual fields through history Artists became Architects and Architects turned to Art.
Michelangelo, for example, was a great artist and a great Architect too. This is the reason why his creations were both Artistic
and Architectural master pieces. Sculpture, Paintings, Columns, Ceilings and Walls all of them were merged into one and the
result was stunning. All of them were inseparable components of building that besides doing their individual jobs were
merging with the whole in Unity.

But as the times changed a lot of things associated with Art, like painting and Sculpture, have become mere decorative pieces
as they were added as cosmetic treatment without having any inherent relationship. This was seen by many as unnecessary
and as a result Art and Architecture slowly started parting ways. The modernists were totally unconvinced about the role of
Art in Architecture, And as a result till today they are struggling to come together again.

But in a way we can still see the inherent urge of the Architects to integrate Art in their Architectural creations. If we carefully
study, a lot of Modern buildings display the tendencies of Modern Art in them. This is evident even in the most modern
interior spaces designed by Architects who do not prescribe to the role of Art in Architecture. Like Mind and Soul can not be
distinguished or separated Art and Architecture can not be seen as two entities.
