For the first time in years my husband suggested that we do some Christmas baking, make a fruit cake and perhaps a plum pudding or two. After all, next week it's Stir up Sunday! Traditionally, Stir Up Sunday is the last Sunday before Advent (a penitential season) and like Shrove Tuesday before Lent it was customary to use up rich ingredients beforehand. Also, the special prayer for that Sunday began with the words: “Stir up we beseech thee O Lord, the wills of Thy faithful people..”. Of course, folk made up their own version: Stir up, we beseech thee the pudding in the pot...and keep it hot! Tradition has it that making Christmas fare on Stir Up Sunday brings good luck — and it gives the food time to mature and develop flavour all ready for Christmas At this time of the year we have a Children's Workshop at Harpley Church: Birthday cakes for Jesus! We stir up all the ingredients, bake them (not in church!) and later at a second workshop we ice the cakes creatively in time for Christmas. We all have a lot of fun doing this, children and adults alike. It's good to think of safe and predictable things in the run-up to Christmas 2019 — carol services, present-buying, decorating the tree - to counterbalance the uncertainty in our United Kingdom at this time. As we still experience the political contortions of Brexit and approach a December General Election for the first time since 1923, even if we look beyond our shores to the wider world, all we see is unrest and division. There is no peace, no goodwill. We are challenged on all sides, particularly in the way we abuse our planet and its resources. Members. of my own wider family have been active in the climate change protests in London, fervently believing that we all have a stake in the quality of life of future generations — and we must do something positive now before it's too late. The annual reassertion of our Christian faith at Christmas through the birth of Jesus, the Christ-child, comes at an important time. Every year this Christian festival, this celebration of love, vulnerability and sheer humanity, reminds us that in all this earthly turmoil we are not alone. God loves us so much that he sent his Son to be with us to experience our human predicament in all its gritty reality - even to death on a cross. The story of our redemption begins at Christmas. Never have we needed more the message of the angels: Peace on earth, goodwill to all people. As Charles Dickens’ Tiny Tim observed: “God bless us, every one!” Happy Christmas to you all, Reverend Judith 05 NEW MEMBERS WELCOME AE OLD Located in the centre of the village where you (Col ola Meu mele ome) (eM oA Plenty of facilities including both pool and snooker tables, darts and live sports OO OAC O1553 636170 OTT Ae) aif once tte ae Lime Kiln Road, Gayton Fraser Dawbarns LLP Pee AE eta ot ea (od At Fraser Dawbams we offer a range of specialisms for both personal and business clients including © Agricultural Law ‘© Wills and Administration of Estates (Probate) © Lasting Powers of Attorey & Court of Protection Matters ‘Lifetime Planning & Wealth Management © Family and Matrimonial Law © Residential Conveyancing ‘© Legal Disputes © Employment Law © Commercial Property ‘© Commercial and Corporate Law For further information or to seek advice, please contact one of our offices below: King’s Lynn Downham Market March Wisbech 01553 666600 01366 383171 01354 602880 01945 461456 06 Gayton Parish Council News The Parish Council Meeting took place on 6 November 2019. Gayton & Gayton Thorpe Neighbourhood Plan Thank you from everyone on the Neighbourhood Plan (NP) Steering Group for your support and assistance with the NP this year. We really appreciate your responses to the surveys which are essential contributions to our research and enable the content of the NP which must come from you all. The NP will be completed in 2020. In the New Year, the NP steering group will be asking everyone about their housing needs. If you want to move, we need to know what sort of housing you are looking for and how affordable it is for you. This is so that we can include policies in the NP that match the actual housing requirements of local people. This is likely to be the last research survey for you to complete and return and we would be grateful for as many responses as possible, please, thank you. With the help of our consultant and Landowner responses, the Local Green Spaces (LGS) written work is coming together and we are working towards finalising those areas which can be identified as suitable for designation and where para 77 (rural housing) and para 100 of the National Planning Policy Framework has been applied. This will all be shared at the referendum stage of the Neighbourhood Plan. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas. ) Contact details: Gayton NP, The Willows, Back Street, Gayton, KL, PE32 10R www.gaytonnp.wordpress.com_Email: GaytonNP@gmail.com ul Mark's Gardening Service Mob: 0787 615 1688 Matt King Limited Oil Boiler Servicing 7 ‘C) MK Breakdowns 01553 840177 07775 911008 Registered mking896@googlemail.com Technician www.mkingboilers.co.uk Breakfast served from 8am daily ‘Lunch menu including our hot fork buffet from-t2pm Dinner service from 6pm Takeaway servicegs Bar open from 12pm Boutique B&B - Functions’ Garden Centuries of charm, 21st Century comfort Call 01553 636252 Worzels Roofing New roofs Strip & retile Repairs Chimeys rebuilt Fascias & gutters Leadwork Loft insulation 18 years experience Free estimates Darron Harrowing 01760 755024, 07990 972381 www.worzelsroofing.com For GENERAL & AGRICULTURAL WELDING REPAIRS call NIGEL DREW Cross Roads Gayton Thorpe Stockist of various brackets, fixings, etc. 4 NS) Tet: 01553 636605, =*#, AJ.COGGLES .s=. voc =e@! Together being the best that we can be in mind, body and spirit! The Autumn term has been a busy one for our various sports teams The children had a brilliant time at the Primary Schools Rugby Festival. There was a good mixture of fun and competitive play with Gayton narrowly losing to St Martha’s in a thrilling group match. Their tagging was superb and team-work fantastic. Well done team Gayton! Once again, we were very proud of our children who competed in the Hockey Festival. We entered 2 teams and both thoroughly enjoyed their day of hockey matches at Lynn sport. Our Year 3 and 4 team scored over 40 goals across the day and are keen to get back in training for next year's competition! This term also saw around 36 of our children take part in the Cluster Cross Country competition. This is our biggest number of competitors to Date and they ran in some of the most challenging conditions we have ever experienced. The course was cold, wet and muddy but the children ran superbly well with some very notable performances. A number of our pupils finished in top positions in the Key stage 1 event whilst in Key Stage 2 we had a number of pupils who made it through to the next round. Well done to all that took part and thank you to parents who braved the weather to spectate. A group of our Key Stage 1 children also took part in a morning of fun sporting activities in a fun festival this term. It has been an exciting year for us, we have introduced new activities to the hall and the Fayre and Bingo events have been a great success. We have accepted the limitations of the current hall but realize that through sheer hard work and moving activities to outdoors, we increase the appeal for all that we are trying to do. Next year may see further changes, as we attempt to make greater progress with our facility but we do not lose sight of the charitable role of our village hall, which is to provide a safe and low-cost amenity, for all community groups to use. Ahuge hug of gratitude to all of you that do so, as in using the hall, you also show support for the facility and may this continue throughout 2020, thank you. Back to business.... we begin with an apology to those of you who took part in the Scarecrow competition but were unable to be at the hall to hear the winners declared They were:- First prize - ‘Plastic Promise' by the Gayton Brownie/Girl Guide Troop Second Prize - ‘Benjamin the Farmer’ by Benjamin, Fay and Greg Baker Third Prize - ‘The Mermaid’ by Hannah Carter We hope this clears up any confusion and next year's winners and runners up will be published at the time. Our speaker, Lindsey Bavin, manager at True's Yard, was welcomed and we sat back to listen to ‘King's Lynn - a tale of 2 towns’. In 1101, Bishop Herbert de Losinga paid for St Margaret's Church (The Minster)to be built and authorised a Saturday Market. The town became prosperous as trade built up along the waterways and filled the space between the two rivers, Millfleet to the south and Purfleet to the north. In the middle of the 12” century, Bishop. Turbus extended the town to an area known as Newland, north of the Purfleet. This area had its own Market held on a Tuesday and St Nicholas Chapel was built as a chapel of ease to St Margaret's. St Nicholas Chapel served the population of the North End and was known as the Fishermen's Chapel. Both settlements were united under a royal charter in 1204 and became known as Bishop's Lynn. True's Yard is a Community Museum and depicts the story of the old North End fishing quarter of Kings Lynn. Visitors can see a permanent collection of exhibits or book a tour of the North End. Refreshments were then served by Roz and Ady Raffle prize was won by Lin Birthday gifts were given to Barbara, Valerie B, Anne and Ali Members' gifts went to Jan, Wendy & Ali The competition for an item beginning with 'S' was won by Ann's star with Jan coming second with a tiny pair of shoes. In November we will be holding our AGM and will be looking forward to Christmas celebrations in December. Their behaviour whilst out has been exemplary and many members of the public have commented on how well behaved they are. Recently our Year 1 and 2 pupils participated in the Active Kids festival. The children took part in a themed multi skills festival where they learnt many different sporting skills and played many different games. They all got to work with a group of Young Leaders from Springwood High School who supported them through all of the activities. In Key Stage 2 our pupils have been busy playing tag rugby, Quicksticks hockey and are about to take partin the town Cluster cross country. Good luck toall those involved In addition to all the sport we have been involved in, we have also found time to visit St Nicholas' Chapel in King's Lynn to find out about its history as part of a project run by National Heritage. They with the tales they have been told about the wonderful church. We would like to say a big thank you to NatWest Bank also who have been in to school to help the older pupils arrange a party and in Years 5 and 6 discover a fraud scene. All of this learning was to help them understand more about money sense. The school is looking forward to being entertained by the EYFS and Key Stage 1 children in their Nativity Play which they are busy practising the songs for before the performances later this term—I have enjoyed listening to them whilst | work so I'm sure they will be fantastic on the day! Our FOAS continue to work hard to support us—a huge thank you for your help in organising the disco and all the upcoming Christmas events later this term. | look forward to sharing some of these with you in a future newsletter. The woolly creatures will be grazing rash cover crops on fields all over the farm between now and February, the radish really does provide a moveable feast. Once the sheep have done their work, the fields will be treated with a herbicide ready for the following crops This is the time of year when the hedges get their annual cut and the ditches are cleared out. People often question why the hedgerows have to be cut and the answer is very simple — it improves the health of the hedgerow. A regularly trimmed hedge will be thick and bushy, providing a safe place for birds to nest next year. In places where hedges act as a living fence, they need to be thick to keep the grazing animals in. The ditches are cleared to allow water to run freely - something that the recent deluge has proven is a very necessary part of land management. Each ditch has a drain at its end point, so one of the tasks is to clear and unblock any drains to help more efficient field drainage. The weather has been playing havoc with our plans. Only half of next year's planned wheat crop has been drilled following from the sugar beet and potato harvest. The soggy soil was just not fit to be drilled so fewer winter cereals will be grown. This has meant we have implemented Plan B, so the area will instead be drilled with spring combinable crops — spring beans with a target market for human consumption in Egypt and spring barley with a target market for brewing or distilling. We did manage to drill winter forage rye. This will be sent to the the energy generating biodigester at Swaffham to help provide more renewable energy. Some sugar beet is still in the ground and will be harvested over the winter months. Once it has been lifted, then spring crops can be sown. Soil sampling takes place at this time of the year both for soil borne pests and nutrient analysis to ensure that crops have the necessary nutrition applied during the growing season.
