QUESTION 1 (20 marks)

The diagram below represents a typical cooling process.

(a.) Sketch the feedback/feed-forward control strategy to maintain the product stream

temperature. [6]

(b.) Draw and label the block diagram that represents the control strategy in (a.). [8]

QUESTION 4 (35 marks)

A mixing process is carried out in a system of two vessels having volumes V1 and V2, wherein a

fluid stream is continuously recycled at a rate of F m3/min.

Assuming complete mixing in both vessels, show that if a quantity N0 moles of tracer is added to

vessel 1 at time zero (t = 0), the concentration in vessel 1 at subsequent times is given by:

𝑁0 𝑉2 −𝐹𝑡(𝑉1 +𝑉1 )
𝐶1 (𝑡) = [1 + 𝑒 1 2 ]
𝑉1 + 𝑉2 𝑉1

Hints:

N0
1. ) At t = 0, C1 (0) = & C2 (0) = 0
V1

2. ) Carry out individual balances on each tank and then eliminate C2 (s)
