MANUAL MATERIAL HANDLING

What is Manual Material Handling?
Manual material handling is defined as the transporting or supporting of a load by hands or bodily force.
Hazards and Injuries
These include: • Rupture of intervertebral discs
• Carrying • Muscle strain and sprain
• Torn or stretched tendons / ligaments
• Pushing
• Rupture of the abdominal wall (hernia)
• Pulling • Cuts from sharp edges
• Moving / • Bruises, fractures and cuts from dropped loads
Sliding • Struck by handling objects
• Hoving • Pinch and crush Injuries

Factors Leading to Injuries

• Load - Too heavy or awkward to be handled manually or can
shift its centre of gravity or the object is wet, slippery, or have
sharp edges that makes it hard to grasp.
• Individual - Too old or too young. Does not take appropriate
rest breaks; insufficient recovery time, poor health condition
etc.
• Task - May require excessive stretching or straining of body
part, repetitive / frequent handling the load or longer travel
distance. Or the individual adopt incorrect lifting technique or
poor coordination while team lifting.
• Environment - The workplace temperature, humidity, noise
level, illumination, high wind, congested and not levelled
access route, poor housekeeping, posture constrain etc.

Control Measures
• Avoid or reduce manual material handling; use mechanical aids.
• Check the material / load before handling, i.e. Shape, size, contents &
handles etc. if it is packed.
• Understand where you need to move the material, accessibility to the
material and to the destination otherwise potentially damaging?
• Plan how do you want to handle or move the material
• Conduct pre visual inspection for safe access or movement
• Use appropriate Hand gloves PPE
• Wear safety boots or shoes to protect toes from falling loads.
• Size up the load and if necessary, make a trial lift of a few inches.
• Do not attempt to lift alone any load that is too heavy, too large or awkward.
Maintain safe body posture.
• Do not carry a load, which obscures your vision.
• Keep good communication, cooperation and coordination while performing
