Information concerning sfety and health risks and proper precautions with respect to par- ticular materials and conditions should be obtained fom the employer, the manufactorer or supplier ofthat material or the material safety dtashec. [Nothing contained in any API publication is to be construed as granting any right, by implication or otherwise, for the manufactur, sale, oF use of any method, appara, oF prod- uct covered by lees patent. Nether should anything contained in the publication be con- strved as insuring anyone agains liability for infringement of eters patent. ‘Generally, API standards ate reviewed and revised, raffimed, oF withdrawn at last every five years. Sometimes a one-time extension of up to wo years willbe added to this review ‘cycle. This publication will no longer be in effet five years after its publication date as an ‘operative API standard or, where an extension has been granted, upon republication, Status ‘of the publication can be ascertained from the API Standardization Manager {telephone (202) 682-8000}. A catalog of API publications and materials is published annually and updated quarterly by API, 1220 Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008. Acceptable wing processes are: . Shielded Metal Are Welding (SMAW). ‘Gas Tungsten Are Welding (GTAW) and Pulsed GTAW (GTAWP, Gas Metal Are Welding (GMAW) forthe following transfer modes: i. Spray (GMAW-Sp) ii. Shor Crcuting (GMAW'S). ii, Pulsed (GMAW-P). iv. Globular (GMAW-G). 4. Submerged Are Welding (SAW), €. Blectrogas Welding (EGW). {Flux Cored Are Welding (FAW). : Plasma Are Welding (PAW). 1, Other welding processes approved by the purchaser. 5.2. LIMITATIONS OF FUSION WELDING PROCESSES ‘The fusion welding processes listed in 5.1 are accepable with restrictions and comments contained in 3.2. 5.21 Automatic Pulsod Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTaW-P) ‘When used for root pass welding of single-sided joins, ‘welding shall be performed with the same make and model of| welding system using the same equipment andor program Settings as those used inthe procedure qualifications. Commentary: The need to specify the make and model, program, equipment setings and pulse waveform is hased ‘pon the effects these variables have on welding ar perfor mance, especially sidewall fusion and out-f-position weld- ing. Studies have shown considerable variation in are ‘characteristics when one make of model of welding system is ‘compared 19 another. This varition ean lead to welding defects, some of which may be very dificult detect by radiography. 522 Short Circuiting Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) “The use of GMAW-S shall he limited to the following conditions a. The process shall not be used for branch connections oF socket weld 1 For vertical welding, the root pass and second pass pro- _resson fora materia of any thickness may be either uphill cr downhill «. The ill and cap pas for but or fillet welds may be welded ‘with this process provided the thickness of any member does ot exceed Hein, (9.5 myn) and vertical welding is performed. ‘with upill progression, 523 Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-P) GMAW-P may be used for any material thickness in any position, ‘Commentary: Whenever the welding system is changed or the setings on existing equipment sigifcanly altered, the fabricator should verify weld properties. The extent of veri cation or testing should be as agreed between the purchaser and fabricator. 5.24 Flux Cored Arc Welding (FAW) 5.244 _Self-shielding FCAW (FCAW:S) may be used only for welding carbon steel structural items. The following _idelines and restrictions apply: 8, Electrode types identified by the consumable manufac: turer for multipass application should be used, ‘b Only electrode classifications which have specified mi ‘mum impact test requirements should be used «. PCAW-S shall not be used with other welding processes ‘without qualifying the specific combination, 5.242 FCAW with external gas shielding (FCAW-G) may be ued fr ether groove or filet welds fr pressure boundary orstructural welding $24.3. For procedures requiting ether impact or hardness testing, weld metal properies should be reviewed with the conaumable manufacturer to ensure the orginal qualified properties continue to be met Wee Guineas Fon Te CoM, Ono Gas MOUETTES a ‘Table 5-1—Difusiole Hydrogen Limit for FCAW Electrodes ‘Maximim Dif Hydrogen Designation (Per AWS AS20 Spesied Minimum Tenale Steagh forthe Elesuode (PerAWS AS20.0r A529) (rA529) = 70s CRE Pap 1 > 70 si (ARS MP) Hs Nove: When welding with 70 ks (483 MPs) electrodes on sts hv ing a esl sength of 80 ki (552 MPa) or greater, M4 designated less sal bese Commentary: Welding consumables, including those for FRCAW, are routinely usd in situations not addressed by the testing requirements in AWS/ASME welding specifications A periodic review with the manufacturer is good practice to assure minor variations tat occur oer time with FCAW con- sumable formulations (eg, raw material and microalloying changes) do not adversely affect the ability of these products to perform as intended.
