Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Nouns- A person, place or thing
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the differences between common, proper and possessive
nouns.
Students will be able to explain the differences between their, they’re and there and use them in a
sentence.
Students will be able to create their own sentences using common nouns, proper nouns and
possessive nouns.

State Standards:

4.1 Use common, proper, and possessive nouns.

4.2 Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences.

Context:
This is a first grade grammar lesson of possessive nouns. This is an important lesson because
knowing the differences between common, proper and possessive nouns. Knowing the
differences between the different kinds of nouns is necessary in their writing. Before this lesson
is taught, students have learned about using verbs to convey a sense of past, present and future
and they have an understanding of what a noun is (a person, place or thing) and how to use a
noun in sentence, and in this lesson they will get a better understanding of the types of verbs they
are using. After this lesson, students will be able to identify specific types of nouns. After this
lesson we will be learning about conjunctions and their function in a sentence. This lesson is a
basic understanding of nouns and how to use them correctly. It will prepare them for future
lessons on plural nouns, collective nouns, and pronouns.
Data:
Students will be grouped based on exit ticket from the previous lesson on basic nouns. The last
exit ticket was to make sure the students had a basic understanding of nouns before we got into
the different types of nouns. The exit ticket was collected via google forms. The exit ticket
served as more of a pretest to test their prior knowledge. I asked them questions such as “what is
the definition of a noun?” and asked them to give examples of nouns. Based on this exit
ticket/pretest data, students will be grouped into 3 groups- Group 1 (no knowledge of nouns),
group 2 (some knowledge of nouns) and group 3 (understood nouns very well). After this class
session, there will be another exit ticket. This will be a more in depth analysis on nouns, and
students will have to choose whether the noun is a common noun, proper noun, or possessive
noun. I will also include some questions on when to use “there, their and they’re”. This exit
ticket will be collected via Kahoot. I will put up a game code at the end of the lesson and they
will join the quiz/game. The data I collect from this lesson will determine the students placement
for our next grammar lesson.

Procedures:
Introduction(20 minutes):
For the introduction, I will begin by showing the students a short video, the
School House of Rock video on nouns. Then we will be doing a short lesson on
nouns to refresh their memories. After we go through a short PowerPoint
containing simple sentences, I will ask the students to give some examples of
nouns and answer any questions they have about nouns. After we go through the
short lesson on basic nouns, I will go into detail and give a short lesson on what a
common, proper and possessive noun is. There will be another PowerPoint with
definitions and examples. After this, I will give a short explanation of the
materials the students will need at each station, and what their responsibilities are
when they are at these stations. Students will be put into the three groups based on
the exit ticket data from the previous lesson. They will know which group they
are in based on the colored shape I put on their desk before they came back from
lunch. Group 1 will have green squares, group two will have blue triangles and
group 3 will have yellow circles. Students will get into their groups and I will tell
each group where to begin instruction.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

For this part of the lesson, we will start by doing a review on nouns and
answering questions on a white board. I will state a noun and they will write on
their whiteboard whether they think it is a common, proper or possessive noun.
Depending on whether the students are understanding the content or not, we will
continue on to the next part of this lesson, but if they do not understand what a
common, proper or possessive noun is, we will do some more review and I will
give them more examples. The second part of the lesson, students will be given a
worksheet containing 6 sentences. In these sentences, students must identify
which word in the sentence is a noun and whether they think it is a common,
proper or possessive noun. After everyone has finished, we will go over the
answers and I will collect the worksheet.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

During this part of the lesson, students will work groups of 3-4 to come up with a
fun short story that contains at least two common nouns, two proper nouns and
three verbs. The story can be about anything they choose as long as it is
appropriate. They should take about 10 minutes to write their story and if they
have time, they can share their story with other members working in the group
with them. Students in this group can go to google classroom and either watch the
video on common and proper nouns (khan academy) or reference the PowerPoint
we went over at the beginning of class (posted on google classroom).

Independent Digital (15minutes):

For this part of the lesson, students will watch a quick 3 minute video on the use
of their, there and they’re. After they watch the video, they will have to come up
with 3 sentences. They will create one sentence using “there”, one sentence using
“their” and one sentence using “they’re”. After they finish typing their sentences,
they will watch another video on common and proper nouns. After they finish that
video, they will do the same thing and come up with one sentence containing a
common noun and one sentence containing a proper noun. Once they are done
watching the videos and typing out their questions, they will post them to our
google classroom page for me to see.

Closure (15 minutes):

For the end of the lesson, I will first ask the students how they feel about the
content we went over today. Students can answer with a thumbs up, thumbs down
or thumbs in the middle. If there are a lot of thumbs down, I will answer
questions. After that, students will use their iPads and open Kahoot. This will
serve as their exit ticket so I can see who is struggling and who understands it.
After we finish our game of Kahoot, I will ask for volunteers to come up and
share the short stories they created together for the collaborative part of the
lesson.

Rationale:
School House of Rock Noun video
I chose to show my students this School House of Rock noun video because it is a
fun video that makes it easy for kids to remember. Since we will be watching this
video at the beginning of the lesson, it will get the students excited about the
lesson by watching a fun video. This video gives a short synapsis of what a noun
is and it is sung in a fun tune that kids can listen to and remember easily.
There, their and they’re video
I chose to have the students watch this video to get a better understanding of a
commonly misunderstood set of words. Since they all sound the same, it is
important for them to know the difference for the future when they use it in their
writing. It is important to practice using these words in the correct way because
they are commonly mistaken and it is a fundamental of vocabulary that many
students have a hard time grasping.
Common and Proper noun video
I chose to have students watch this video during the independent digital part of the
lesson because it is relevant to what we are learning and it gives very good
examples of the different kinds of nouns. It is important for the students to know
this information and to be able to use them correctly in a sentence.
Kahoot game
I chose to use a Kahoot game as our exit slip because it is a good way for me to
tell which students are understanding the content and which students are
struggling to grasp the concepts. It is also a fun way for students to get involved.
Students who place top 3 on kahoot will receive a gold star (which you can collect
for prizes at the end of the quarter), therefore students will be motivated to
actually try on this Kahoot.
