Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
Let us first seek the guidance of the Lord.
May I request Lyndel to lead the opening
prayer? Let’s bow our head and feel the
presence of the Lord. Almighty
God…(student’s prayer)
Thank you Lyndel.
Good Morning, class! Good Morning, Ms. Fortaleza.
Before you take your seats, kindly check if
there are pieces of paper under your chairs,
pick it up and arrange your chairs properly. (Students pick up the pieces of dirt
and arrange their chairs.)

2. Checking of Attendance
Now, let us check the status of the
attendance, Ms. Secretary, do we have
absentees today? I’m glad to report that everybody is
present today.

It’s so nice to hear that all are present

today.

B. Review
Before we go on to our new topic, let us
first have a short recap about our previous
activities. Who would like to remind us? Last time, we watched a documentary
clip about the teenage issues and
have a short discussion about it.

That’s right. Do you have any questions or

clarifications about our last topic? None, ma’am.

If that so, let us proceed to our lesson for

today.

1. Activity
Before we move to our topic, let us have a TYRANNY Absolute Power
game. Go to your respective groups and form
a straight line. The leader will stand in the INTERMINABLE Endless
first row; the rest of the members will put R
FORSAKE Give Up
their arms forward and place their hands on
the shoulders of the person in front of them. I FLUSTERED Confuse
will give each group one word and should HAZY Out of Sight
find inside this room the meaning of that
word. The first group who will connect the
word to its correct meaning will be the
winner. Do you understand? Yes, Ma’am.
Remember to hold on to your group
mates. Let’s start! (Students will group themselves and
perform the activity.)
Who among you think to be married,
someday? (Students raise their hands)
I see. From your own opinion, what are the
things that one must have or possess before
getting married? Write your answers inside
the raindrops.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE
MARRYING

I’m glad that you have a good viewpoint on

the things to consider before marriage.

2. Analysis
After we discover some words that you
may encounter in our story, I want you to
stay with your group. We will going to read
the story entitled “Footnote to Youth” by Jose
Garcia Villa. Let us have a group chain story
telling. I will read the first paragraph then the
group 1 will read the second one, group 2 will
read the third and the sequence follows. Do
you understand? Yes, ma’am.
Ok, are you excited? Let’s start. (Students will read the story after the
distribution of copies through group
chain story telling.)
Do you understand the story? Yes, Ma’am.
Let’s see. I will give you 5 minutes to talk
about what you have understood on the story
and brainstorm about some things you don’t
understand with your group. I will ask some
questions and I am expecting that everyone
can answer. The person who can answer my
question will have the points on their group.
Is it clear? Yes, ma’am.
(Students will discuss the story with
their group)
To better understand the story, I will ask
questions about it. The first question will be
answered by a student I will select on a
particular group. The next questions will then
be answered by the chosen group member of
the group who already answered, and the
flow continues. Do you understand?
Let’s start with Group 3. I choose Andrea to
answer.
Give me 3 characters in the story and The characters in the story are
describe each one of them. Dodong, a 17 year old boy who wants
to marry Teang. Dodong’s father to
whom Dodong got the permission to
be married and Teang, who becomes
the wife of Dodong who suffered from
early marriage.
Very Good. Choose a member of another
group to answer the next question. Ralph of Group 5.
Ok, Ralph. Kindly describe the setting of
the story. The setting is in the barrio or in rural
place where most people work in
fields. The clues are described by the
presence of carabaos, rice fields and
streams. Also, the characters are
mentioned to use petroleum lamps to
their houses.
Precisely! Keep the ball rolling, Ralph. I choose Abegail of Group 1.
Abegail, what point of view was used in the
story? The omniscient point of view is used in
the story since the narrator was able
to infiltrate the thoughts of the
characters.
Correct. Choose the next lucky one before
you take your seat. I choose Frances of Group 2.
What do you think is the story all about,
Frances? I think the story is all about Dodong
who entered marriage life with Teang
at the age of eighteen, and who later
felt remorseful about his marriage life.
That’s right. Pass the ball to your next
classmate. Kristina of Group 4.
Kristina, What do you think is the character
revealed by Dodong when he was got tickled
by the worm, jerked his foot, flinging the
worm into air yet not bothered to look where
it fell? His reactions towards it revealed that
from the very beginning, Dodong is
somewhat self-obsessed to the point
that he doesn’t bother to look at the
consequences of his actions.
That’s a great evaluation, Kristina. You may
keep the fire burning by choosing on one of
your classmates. I want Mark Joseph of Group 5.
Ok. Please stand up. How did Teang find
married life? Teang found her married life difficult to
the extent that she was unhappy with
their marriage. For six successive
years, Dodong and Teang kept having
children. She spent the rest of her life
with the non-stop household chores.
She became shapeless even at the
young age.
Excellent! She was unhappy with their
marriage that she even wondered how life
would be if she married Lucio, instead of
Dodong. Choose the next one to answer,
Mark Joseph. I choose Micaela of Group 4.
Micaela, what made Dodong feel that he
was no longer a boy? Dodong felt that he was no longer a
boy because he had pimples on his
face and his lip is already darkened.
He thought that those were the
evidence of being a man.
Very Good. Do you think he was right? I think no.
Yes, let’s discover why. Choose a leader
from the other groups. Gladys of Group 2.
Please stand up. When Dodong asked
permission to get married, his father felt sorry
for him. So did Dodong when Blas asked for
permission to get married. They knew that
life is hard after marriage, why then do you
think that they did not prevent their sons from
experiencing those hardships that they’ve
gone through? I think it’s because both fathers
married early, they lacked the
experience and the things to know
how to raise children. So the fact that
they were unable to fulfill their
responsibility as parents in guiding
their kids on a wiser path.
Exactly! This is particularly due to the fact
that his father never had wisdom either. Such
wisdom can only be passed on by those
people who greatly influenced their lives-
which in most cases our parents.
Gladys, choose another leader to answer
the last question. I choose Valerie from Group 1.
Valerie, kindly explain this line from the
story. “Youth must triumph … now, Love
must triumph…now. Afterwards, it will be
life.” The phrase depicts the cycle of life
which means one must experience
being young first before turning into an
adult, and when he is ready enough
that is the time that he may enter to a
marriage life. One must enjoy his
younger years, enjoy being in love,
then he will be ready for the so called
life- to live and to build his own home.
Very well said. This phrase refers to a cycle
of life that one must follow and go through.
Since every group had answered my
questions, everyone will have their reward.

3. Abstraction
What is the lesson that you get from the The story reminds us of the
story? Anyone from the class? responsibilities and realities that come
with marriage is difficult especially
when we are yet incapable of the
responsibilities and challenges that life
gives. Therefore, we should not rush
into something that we will be
regretting in the end.

4. Application
Now, you are going to analyze the short
story Footnote to Youth using a graphic
organizer. What you are going to do is to
supply each item. Be sure that everybody will
present.
May I request the representatives of every
group to select your tasks? (Students will go in front to pick the
activity)
You will just stick to your group and
brainstorm about it. You are only given 5-7
minutes to work on it and 3 minutes for your
presentation. (Each group presents)

5. Closure
Life after marriage is hard; therefore, one
should see to it that he is ready and prepared
enough for the bigger responsibilities that life
demands. Do you understand? Yes, ma’am.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Identify the following items based upon the descriptions given.

1. The author of the selection.

2. Teang suitor besides Dodong.
3. The age of Dodong when he got married.
4. The number of children Dodong and Teang had for six successive years.
5. The woman whom Blas wants to marry.

V. Assignment
In a short bond paper, describe the life of Dodong if he didn’t marry at the
age of 17. Make an illustrative sketch of what could have been his life based
on your perceptions.
