N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Andrew Chittaphong Date of Activity: 11/23/2019 Faculty name: Darlene
Lacroix

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

For my professional activities, I completed both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced
Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications. The BLS course teaches how to perform
high-quality CPR, as well as how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The ACLS
course teaches the recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest, peri-arrest
conditions, and related pharmacology. My role during both these courses was to learn how to
properly perform basic life support measures and which interventions work best with different
cardiac conditions. I then had to demonstrate that I had the knowledge and skills competencies to
pass the course.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

Both of these courses were held at Eclipse CPR training in Tucson, Arizona. The Basic Life
Support course was three hours long, while the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course
was five hours long.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience is valuable to me because upon taking the course, I had learned that
approximately 94% of individuals who have a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital environment
will die as a result of the general population not knowing CPR and basic life saving measures. I
believe BLS should be mandatory to all individuals in order to improve the outcomes of those
who do experience sudden cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. Knowledge of high-quality CPR
may be the deciding factor of whether or not an individual survives or not.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

I will continue to use these experiences throughout my nursing career because it is mandatory
that I have acquired the skills necessary to perform BLS as well as ACLS life saving measures.
In the hospital, rapid responses and codes are an everyday possibility and I must remain up to
date on my life support skills and knowledge. ACLS will be a very important contribution to my
career as a nurse because I plan on being an ICU nurse and will most likely experience a plethora
of cardiac arrests throughout my career. By having the pharmacological knowledge of which
medications to give in certain situations, I can ensure that my patients have the best possible
outcomes. Likewise, early detection of clinical deterioration may also allow me to prevent my
future patients from undergoing any type of arrest situation. Taking the ALCS course has cleared
up any prior misconceptions and confusions I had regarding cardioversions and defibrillations.
Overall, I gained a great ordeal of information from both courses that will serve as a basis of
knowledge I can refer to as a registered nurse.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why
or why not? (Describe)

I would absolutely recommend these professional experiences in the future. I would also
recommend doing these courses through Eclipse CPR as well. These professional activities were
extremely engaging and insightful. After completing these courses, my confidence as a
healthcare professional has greatly improved and I feel like I am more than ready to participate
in real life cardiac/respiratory arrest situations. I would also recommend BLS courses to anybody
because I believe it is necessary for the general population to know how to perform CPR given a
sudden cardiac arrest in public.
