Child/Tama Hini: Hosna. Teacher/ Kaiako: Naema. Date: July/Hōngongoi, 2019.

Assalamu-Alaykum Hosna, your last story was about how you

have been enjoying preschool environment and
developing a great sense of belonging and confidence to
play both inside and outside in the playground. It is
evident that this confidence is giving you the comfort to
explore the preschool environment and learn alongside
other children. During these last few weeks, staff have
provided you transition time to preschool on a regular
basis to support you to get familiar with the preschool
environment and routines. The staff supported you to
bring your lunch-box and drink bottle and put it in the
correct places. We also supported you with all the hygiene
practices for example, washing hands before and after each
kai, sharing kai plate at the morning kai time/ food time and
eating healthy food at lunch time and where to put the
rubbish. I noticed you loved being in a preschool as you see
all your under two friends in the morning when they come in
the van or are dropped off by their parents. You also like all
the activities provided by the preschool especialy painting,
in

drawing and building blocks. Today when I asked you to

draw a place mat
for yourself so you could use it at
kai/food times, you drew with the
marker and tried to reach the container
to put it back to get another colour
marker. I also noticed you have been
learning how to get up on a big chair.
Hosna, you also enjoying playing
outside and getting familar with the
preschool routines. Today when you
observed me asking a child to get the
picker he dropped on the ground and
clean the sand pit, you delebrately
throw some sand outside the sand-pit
and came outside the sandpit to get the
brush and picker to clean. This shows
you have been observing other children
and learning alongside them. I noticed when I asked the children to park their
cars, scooters and bikes near the fence and stand in the line to go back inside for
lunch, you also got the push chair and took it near the fence to park. When you
saw Julia coming to help, you left the push chair for her to take it further close
to the fence and stood in the line to go inside. You had a big smile on your face
when I praised you for being so responsible and helping Julia to park the push
chair near the fence and then standing in the line alonside the big children. ka
pai Hosna for the great help.

How can we extend this learning?

Hosna staff will keep a reciprocal relationship with you to become more
familiar with the preschool environment, people, routines and rules. Staff will
also continue encouraging you to get the guidence you need to become
increasingly capable of understanding how things work in preschool and adapt
to the changes.
