Lesson Title: Analyzing Mob Mentality

11-12R2: Determine two or more themes or central ideas in a text and analyze their
development, including how they emerge and are shaped and refined by specific details;
objectively and accurately summarize a complex text. (RI&RL)
Learning Objective(s):

After reading a few excerpts from The Lord of The Flies, 11th grade students will discuss with
each other the effects of Mob Mentality within the novel and use contextual evidence to craft
an poster on how the theme of Mob Mentality reflects on society.

MATERIALS/RESOURCES

Technologies and Other Materials/Resources:

1.​ ​3 excerpts from The Lord of the Flies

2.​ ​a Graphic organizer

4.​ ​printed version of The Lord of the Flies (legal copy)

6. access to school laptops for making the poster and to assist with ideas
STUDENT ASSESSMENT

At the end of the lesson this is how students will be assessed:

Students will show the teacher a graphic organizer with notes showing their thought process
and how it will be synthesized into a cohesive poster.

CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY

​Anticipatory Set/Hook:

Provide students with three excerpts from The Lord of the Flies containing various examples
of Mob Mentality in the novel. Students will be placed in groups and discuss the excerpts in
detail. (20 min)

Procedures (Overview of lesson):

The students will be tasked with utilizing contextual evidence to prepare an essay on
Mob Mentality and its effects on society.
Time Instructional Strategies/Learning Tasks

1. Re-introduce students to the novel and present them with the three
excerpts they will need to sift through in order to find contextual evidence of
30 Mob Mentality. Then give them graphic organizers to help them organize

2. Allow students access to laptops to begin creating their posters using
Canva.

Closure:

Explain to students that while fiction isn’t real, it is reality based and many authors use
aspects of real life to help craft their stories. Much like an author would, my students would
have crafted a cohesive, organized poster showing the meaning behind text that must be
understood in order to apply it to life.
