A view of Mt. Banahaw from one of our organic rice fields shortly before harvest

We are located in the Philippines, and our production facilities are in a rural farming community of Quezon Province, on Mt.
Banahaw. We grow, produce, and distribute our own line of Philippine herbal and organic food products. Our products are
marketed in the US under the Tropical Traditions brand, as well as many others.

Company Profile
Mt. Banahaw Health Products Corporation markets herbal food supplements, organic foods, and bulk herbs. In addition, the corporation
offers health and nutrition education and counseling under the leadership of trained nutritionists Brian and Marianita Shilhavy. Brian
Shilhavy is a Certified Nutritional Counselor (CNC) with the American Association of Nutritional Counselors, and Marianita is a
licensed dietician/nutritionist in the Philippines.

The product line of Mt. Banahaw Health Products Corporation is designed to promote health through healthy eating habits. As a health
products company, it is our belief that disease and sickness is the result of a weak body unable to resist sickness primarily because of
poor eating habits. As such, our products are designed to promote health through restoring the body’s natural immune system. We are
NOT a medical company, and do not prescribe our products to cure disease or illness. We do not follow the western approach of
medicine which seeks to destroy disease and sickness through drugs. It is our belief that a healthy body with a healthy immune system
will be able to resist disease and sickness. Our products do not cure anybody, and herbs are not to be used in place of medicine. They are
supplements to a healthy diet and lifestyle. If a change in diet and lifestyle is not made, our products will have a minimal amount of
effectiveness on one’s health. That is why we provide our services in education and counseling to teach people proper nutrition and
health. We do this through seminars, and through counseling in nutrition, which may involve first detoxifying the body and cleansing it.

The herbs we use in our products all come from Mt. Banahaw: either from our own farm or from neighboring farms, or directly from the
wild areas of the mountain. Most of our herbs are wildcrafted, which means they grow wild and are not cultivated (planted). This assures
top quality and potency of the herbs, and also assures that they contain no pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. The herbs that are
cultivated, such as ginger and garlic, grow in a tropical mountain climate on an extinct volcano in nutrient rich soil, and are grown
organically.

Since we live on Mt. Banahaw and most of our workers are family members, we have a distinct advantage over most other natural health
product companies in that we live where the products are grown, and since our workers are trusted friends and family members, we have
complete control over quality of our products. We know first hand if our products are organic or not, for example, because we live with
the farmers. With phone lines being installed into our rural community in year 2000, we can now offer these wonderful products to you
via the Internet.

Our Mission, Goals, Desires

Our mission is to educate people on the wonderful benefits of healthy

living and right eating. It is our conviction that God made our bodies a
certain way, and that with a proper relationship to our Creator along
with healthy eating habits that we can eliminate most of the sicknesses
we typically suffer. Our goal is to provide you with as much free
information on this website as we can on good nutrition and diet from a
Christian perspective. While some of the links we may supply to
information on other websites may not point to Christian sources, we
believe that all truth is God's truth, some of which is revealed naturally
in nature and discoverable by (true) science, while other truth is
supernatural and discoverable only via revelation, specifically through
the record of God's revelation contained in His Word, the Bible. Finally,
our desire is to introduce you to our natural herbs, and to offer to you
quality products at a low price. Our desire is for everyone to enjoy
God's blessing of good health, and we believe nutritional products
should be affordable. Since we manufacture our own herbal products,
we can control the pricing. We believe that our prices will be some of
the best you will find on the Internet or anywhere else.

Our Testimony

My wife, Marianita, grew up where we are currently living, on the

family farm in Mamala on Mt. Banahaw. She left the Philippines for the
first time when she went to Chicago to marry me. We were married in
the month of November, and I was concerned about how her health
would fare during her first winter in Chicago. While I suffered from the
usual ailments of colds, flu, allergies, etc., she breezed through it
without even a sniffle. She shared with me that she had no recollection
of ever having a cold growing up in the Philippines. As a nutritionist,
she attributed this fact to the diet they ate, which consisted mainly of
fresh produce grown on their own farm or locally. Their diet was
mainly fruits and vegetables, as they could seldom afford to buy meat.
Processed foods were rare and also expensive.

Well unfortunately, as she grew accustomed to the standard American

diet, she did start getting sick. In 1998, the Lord brought us back to the
Philippines, to take up farming in the same place Marianita grew up.
One day shortly after we arrived here, we went to visit one of
Marianita's aunts, who lives a ways back off the beaten path on Mt.
Banahaw. To this day, this aunt still lives without electricity and
modern conveniences, and eats basically a "poor" person's diet, feeding
herself and household off of their own crops and fruit trees. While we
visited with her, she sent one of her nieces outside to pick some fresh
pomello (grapefruit) for us to eat as a snack. She shared with us that she
was 85 years old, and had never visited a doctor! I became a believer
that good health has a lot to do with what you eat.

While we started eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, I still was
hanging on to some of my American eating habits. I continued to suffer
from hayfever types of allergies, and had been on anti-histamines ever
since I could remember (since childhood). I and the kids continued to
get sick from time to time, usually having to take antibiotics to get over
various types of infections (ear, throat, urinary, etc.) Then in 1999, I
had to apply for my residency here in the Philippines, and to acquire
this residency, I needed a clean bill of health. But my blood tests kept
showing that I had some kind of infection, probably a urinary tract
infection, even though I had been taking antibiotics for some skin
problems (acne like) I was having on my face, which was a chronic
problem.

So I decided it was time to get serious about my diet, and completely

change my eating habits. I wanted to rid myself of my dependency on
antibiotics. We were already drinking fresh vegetable juice, made
mostly from carrots from our own garden. I went to a 50% (or more)
raw diet, cutting down on the amount of cooked food I ate. I started
eating more sprouts, and all fruits and vegetable raw. Having papaya
growing all around us in abundance, I started eating papaya daily. I
started drinking herbal tea, made from herbs found around our farm,
as well as garlic. I also went on a three-day food fast (and later a longer
5-day, and then a 7-day fast), drinking only herbal tea, fresh vegetable
juice, and potato/carrot broth. I also started drinking Kombucha tea
every day. Other changes we made were to use wild honey in place of
refined sugar whenever possible, and to stop cooking with hydrogenated
refined cooking oil, and use pure Virgin coconut oil instead.

Well, since changing to this kind of diet, I not only rid myself of my
dependency on antibiotics, but I got the added bonus of ridding myself
of my dependency on antihistamines! I continue to be amazed at how
my health has completely changed just by changing my diet. I have done
a lot of research into health and diet, and I am convinced that most of
our health problems today are a result of what we eat. I feel abused by
the American pharmaceutical and medical industry that for years only
treated my symptoms, and kept me dependent on their drugs. I was
never taught or counseled on how my diet affected my health, including
my allergies. For my whole life I believed that my allergies to pollens,
cats, dogs, etc. were something hereditary and beyond my control. For
more information on how diet affects our health, click here.

As stated above, it is our desire to share with you the wonderful benefits
of good health that we enjoy here on Mt. Banahaw through our herbal
products.

Peace with God

How I Found Peace with God
I was driving down a rural highway in north central Wisconsin that
Autumn night in 1977, thoughts running wildly through my mind.
"Why wasn’t I dead?" I thought unbelievingly. I had fully intended to
overdose on drugs and end my life just hours before. But after
swallowing some one hundred assorted pills that I thought were
pretty potent, I woke up surprised not only to find myself alive, but my
head clear also. Didn’t even catch a buzz!

As a senior in highschool, I was hanging around with the wrong

crowd, and heavily into the drug culture. My parents being divorced
when I was young, I had tried living with both sets of parents and
couldn’t get along with either one. I didn’t strike it off too well with girls
either, so with one failed relationship after another, I had decided that
death was preferable to life, thinking that somehow it would be a
gateway to a better life.

But now I was confused, off balance. Overdosing on drugs seemed

like the easiest most painless way of ending my life, and when I
decided to finally go through with it, there was no turning back. The
thought never occurred to me that I would not succeed. So there I
was back in my car driving down a rural highway pondering what to
do next. I remembered a junior high teacher once reading an article
to our class about a guy who killed himself instantly by driving his car
55 mph into a telephone poll. That was it! It would be instantaneous;
painless.

There was one problem, however. As I drove down this unfamiliar

rural road somewhere north of Appleton (about 2 hours north of my
home in Milwaukee), there were drainage ditches between the edge
of the road and where the telephone polls were. I feared my car
would never make it over the ditch.

Finally the road led through a small country town consisting of not
much more than a bar and grocery store. But it was lit up with a few
light polls on the gravel shoulder of the main highway. This was it. I
backed the car up several hundred yards, and then floored it, racing
towards one of the light polls. A glance at the speedometer read 85
mph just before impact. And then total darkness…… for maybe 10-15
seconds.

The sound of my car horn blaring woke me up…. again. Again I had
failed. With nothing better to do, I decided to try and crawl out of the
wreckage. The car was now upside down, but my driver-side window
was missing, so I began to climb out. The people who were in the bar
across the street rushed over and helped me the rest of the way out.
One guy exclaimed to his buddies, "Wow! Check it out! He knocked
down the light poll!" It was probably the most excitement that little
town had seen in years. They called an ambulance and took me to a
nearby hospital.

At the hospital they did some routine checks on me, but other than a
few bruises, I had driven my car into a light poll 85 mph and walked
away from it. The police were able to contact my father through my
licenses plates. I was kept in the hospital overnight for observations,
mostly out of concern for the drugs I had taken.

So I laid there in the hospital bed staring at the ceiling and wondering
why I was alive. The thought had never occurred to me that I would
not succeed in ending my life. Then it hit me. I did not have control
over my own life. God did. It was not mine to take. This was not some
tremendous revelation or anything like that, it was just something I
had learned that day through practical experience. And it gave me
comfort. I felt as if God was saying to me: "I have a purpose for your
life, just wait." From that night on I never again had the desire to take
my own life.

The next day confirmed my suspicions that God had been in control
the whole time. First the sheriff’s report from the "accident" came in. I
learned that my car had gone right through the light pole shearing it
out of the ground, and then continued up the road, veered off into a
drainage ditch, hit a culvert that went underneath a driveway which
upended the car and flipped it over three times finally coming to rest
upside down. Wow! And I walked away from that! But wait, it gets
better….

My dad says to me, "Let’s go to the crash site on the way home." Ok I
thought, why not? As we drive down the rural highway heading north
out of Appleton, we come to the small town where I crashed the car.
The name of the town: Freedom. We drive over to the place where
the car finally came to rest: right in front of a big country church. As I
look at that church and reflect on God’s control over my life, my Dad
says to me: "Hey, look at the name of that bar across the street." I
turn around and look at it: The Crash Inn. My Dad chuckles, and I feel
like I’m in the twilight zone or something.

It’s time to drive back to Milwaukee, but we decide to stop at the junk
yard where they hauled my car. We ask the guy where the Torino is
that they brought in this morning. The guy takes us to the car. He
looks at the car, looks at me, and then asks, "Were you driving that
car??" I nod in affirmant. The guy shakes his head in disbelief. "You
see that car over there?" he says, pointing to a large wrecked car,
"It’s not half as smashed up as yours, but the guy driving that car
didn’t make it."

We walk over to what used to be my car. Totally demolished. The

engine was pushed off its block, and half of it was in the passenger
side front seat. The car basically crumpled when it took out the light
poll. The guy said he couldn’t even tow it, because the wheels and
axles were bent. He had to use a flat-bed truck and lift it up there with
a crane. After hauling it to the junk yard, he had to return a second
time to pick up all the pieces. But the driver seat was still in tact. It
was almost as if a protective bubble had been placed around it. I left
there feeling like my life was worth something to God, and that he
had me on this earth for some reason.

Going back to school, my whole outlook on life changed. I now had

hope, believing that God had some purpose for my life. I had been
brought up in church, and had been taught the Bible and the creeds
of my Protestant denomination, but my faith was very "creedal" also:
it didn’t have much of an impact on my day to day life. So I went back
to my old friends and my partying way of life.

But my attitude in school changed. I was enrolled in a specialty

program in my senior year of high school majoring in business and
marketing. With my new found self confidence, I excelled in the
program, especially in demonstrating sales abilities. I won some
awards in some city and state wide competitions, and purposed to
graduate from high school and make a lot of money in sales. After
graduating from high school, I quickly got certified and began to sell
accident and health insurance door-to-door. I was doing great, and
even sold a policy my first day on the field. But there was something
missing, and I often felt guilty having "conned" someone to buy a
policy that they probably didn’t need and wasn’t quite what they
expected it to be.

So I got a job in a factory working a graveyard shift from 6:00 p.m. to

6:00 a.m. three days on and three days off. It was a good hourly rate,
and a lot of my buddies from high school were working there. It was
boring work, and we all "got high" to help us make it through the long
shifts. But I always saw it as temporary work, until I found a good
sales job that I really liked. It allowed me some financial freedom, and
I was able to rent a condominium with another friend. I was also able
to buy a nice sports car. Life was great in many ways, I could now
party as much as I wanted. But I was still empty and unsatisfied with
my life. I knew there had to be more, and I just thought that if I could
get a good job with the potential to advance in a career, that I would
be happy.

After about a year out of high school and having worked at the factory
for several months, I decided to get back into sales. This time I got a
job selling educational books. It seemed like a more "worthy" product
to be selling. But something inside of me said that I would not be
happy doing this either if I didn’t have God’s blessing. So facing
discouragement again, and having no where to go but forward,
because I had already tried running away from my problems, and I
had already tried exiting life and God wouldn’t let me, I decided to try
not getting high for a few days and just read the Bible, to try and
understand what God’s will was for my life.

This was July of 1979, and at that point I had been getting high on
drugs every day for almost 4 years straight. As I read the Bible, and I
don’t even remember what exactly I was reading, I became acutely
aware of my sins. I had always considered myself a Christian, and a
good person. Even though I got high on drugs, I was no junkie. I
rationalized my behavior as being no different than the casual social
drinker of alcohol. It was just that one was legal and the other wasn’t.
But I thought the laws were wrong, not me.

But now two major sins in my life were staring me right in the face:
one was my drug usage, and the other one was planning my life
without considering what God wanted me to do with my life. Without
even really understanding what the word "repentance" means, I saw
myself in a different light, and knew that my sins were keeping me
from knowing God’s will. I immediately confessed my sins to God,
and told him that I was not going to make any more decisions about
my life until He told me what He wanted me to do.

What happened next is truly the miracle in my life, and words cannot
come close to describing the inner transformation that occurred in me
that summer day in 1979. First of all, a joy and peace flooded my
being, such that I had never known could even exist in this life. It was
the ultimate high, and it was from the Holy Spirit. It was so wonderful,
that I took all my paraphernalia that I used to smoke pot and threw it
into the dumpster outside our building. What I had found was so
much better than drugs, that I never had a desire to get high on drugs
again.

Secondly, the words in the Bible now came alive. It was as if God
was speaking directly to me through them, and indeed He was. The
facts I had studied for years as a kid growing up in church now
became part of a vibrant relationship with the living God, and with the
Savior of the world Jesus Christ. Having never doubted the facts of
Jesus life, death, and resurrection, they now came alive with fresh
meaning. I read the entire Bible in about two weeks: I just couldn’t get
enough of it. When I read verses like Romans 5:7-8 "Very rarely will
anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone
might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us
in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us," I would just fall
down and weep over the incredible love God was showing me
through Christ.

I now knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God had saved me, not
just from a suicide attempt, but He had truly saved me from my sins,
and that I was now going to be with Him in eternity: "Never will I leave
you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

Since I had dedicated my life to God, I decided to go back to school

and study for the ministry. I did study the Bible for a number of years,
and served God in full-time ministry in various parts of the world. But I
have also learned that one does not have to be in full-time Christian
ministry to be serving God, you can serve God wherever you are.
Today my business is helping people regain their health, and I seek
to serve God in that task to the best of my ability. The Bible says, and
science now confirms, that a "joyful heart is good medicine." The
Bible has much to say about good health, and not all of it is physical.
Our spiritual and emotional state has more to do with our health than
our modern rationalistic society and medical system would care to
admit. So if you are seeking better health, don't just look at your
physical symptoms. Look to the Great Physician, and healer of your
soul, and give your heart to Christ for true peace with God. Then you
will discover true health and life! Everything else on this website, and
any product I have to offer you, is worthless if you don't know God
and understand His will for your life. The best part is that his offer of
eternal life is free for you, because he already paid the price of your
sins through the blood of his Son. I have nothing here to offer you
that can beat that!

Peace!

Phil Advantage
How are herbs grown in the Philippines superior
to herbs grown elsewhere?

The Philippines is a tropical climate that enjoys year-round growing

seasons. It is an archipelago of over 8000 islands, formed mostly by
volcanic activity. As volcanoes erupted to form these islands, they
brought nutrient rich soil once buried in the sea up to the top. Even on
our farm on Mt. Banahaw (a non-active volcano), as we plant our crops
we constantly find seashells buried in the soil.

The Philippines is also located in the "typhoon belt," enduring as many

as 26 typhoons a year during its rainy season. Plants that survive these
annual typhoons therefore develop strong genetic traits. Many of the
herbs found in the Philippines actually grow wild. The native Philippine
papaya, for example, is found growing wild throughout the Philippines.
Japanese research done on the Philippine papaya in comparison to
other varieties of papaya that have been imported, have found that the
amount of the digestive enzyme "papain" is almost ten times more
concentrated than other varieties of papaya. Research shows that plants
grown wild in their natural environment are richer in nutrient and
vitamin content than plants cultivated outside their natural
environment. The reason is the soil, where the plants derive most of
their nutrients. Papaya cultivated in the southern United States, for
example, would not be nearly as nutrient rich as papaya grown wild in
its natural tropical environment.

With the rich soil here in the Philippines however, even certain
cultivated plants do very well. For example, we grow carrots on Mt.
Banahaw. Our carrots just seem more juicier and fragrant than the
carrots we used to grow back in our garden in the US.

Here at Mt. Banahaw Tropical Herbs we are committed to using 100%

natural Philippine products. Almost all of our herbs are grown right
here on Mt. Banahaw, many of them on our family farm.

The Shilhavy Farm

Shilhavy Kids on the Shilhavy farm. The top of Mt. Banahaw is in the background, as is Carrie the carabao
(water buffalo).

We are located in the province of Quezon in the Philippines in a rural farming

community situated on Mt. Banahaw. We grow much of the herbs we use in our
products right on our own farm. We do not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides,
but practice organic farming. Some of our herbs are grown on other farms on Mt.
Banahaw (many of them are our relatives.)

Below is a photo gallery from our farm.

Our daughter Sarah, standing behind one of our wild sili (chili pepper) bushes. These
bushes just pop up all over our farm without being planted.

This is a close-up of our wild sili (cayenne pepper). They are very small - and HOT!!
You could put 10 on one tablespoon.

The Problem with the Modern
Diet
Intro

Is it possible that most health problems in modern societies today can be

directly correlated to eating habits? Can such severe health problems as
cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcers, etc. be directly related to
diet? Yes!!

In Genesis 1:29, we read: "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding
seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit
yielding seed; it shall be food for you." In the beginning, man's food
consisted of plants. While other foods, including animals, were later
allowed in scripture, this diet of plant life seems to be the dominant diet
of the common people throughout scripture. Today, much research
seems to bear out that what some call the "Genesis 1:29" diet, is in fact
the healthiest diet we can adhere to.

Medical doctor Rex Russell, in his book "What the Bible Says About
Healthy Living," relates the story of the Hunzas, a Himalayan people.
Early in the twentieth century, it was reported that the Hunzas had an
average life span of 90 years, and often lived over 120 years. A medical
team led by Dr. Robert McGarrison studied the Hunzas in the 1940s,
and did not find a single case of cancer, ulcers, appendicitis or colitis.
Heart disease and hypertension were also apparently unknown among
them. What did they eat? They ate nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits and
legumes: basically a Genesis 1:29 diet. After being incorporated into
Pakistan, the life span of the Hunzas has shortened as they have
adopted a more modern diet.

So what is wrong with the diet that most of the modern world consumes
today? In Genesis 3:17-19 we read the curse God pronounced upon
Adam for his disobedience to God's command. Notice first of all that
when Adam and Eve were living in the Garden of Eden in perfect
harmony with God, each other, and their surroundings, that they only
had one command to obey: a command about what they should not eat.
The very first command God gave to man was a dietary law. When
Adam broke that law, God's curse also involved food: "Then to Adam
He said, 'because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have
eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, "you shall
not eat from it," cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall
eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow
for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field; by the sweat of you
face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, because from it
you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.'"

Notice the principles about man and food that God states in these
verses: 1. Mans' food was to consist of "plants of the field," and 2. food
would come as a result of hard work. However, in modern societies
today, man has tried his best to circumvent God's curse by making food
easy to obtain and convenient to store and distribute. What is the
result? The modern diet consists of food that has been genetically
engineered, chemically treated, and is drastically altered from its
original form in which God created it. This modern diet is the main
cause of illness in the modern world, and helps support a multi-billion
dollar medical and pharmaceutical industry that exists today to treat
these health problems. Let's take a look at some of the foods that are a
part of the standard modern diet today.

Processed Foods

Grains

The staple of most society's diet is usually grain: rice, wheat, corn, etc.
This was true in biblical times as well. Grain was grown, harvested, and
then ground up to be used in making bread. Fred Wight, in his book
Manners and Customs of Bible Lands (Moody Press 1953) comments on
the grinding of grain in Palestine: "The first sound to greet the ear in
the early morning in many a Palestinian village will be the sound of the
grinding of the grain. Today, as in long ago, many of these people resort
to the handmill for this purpose. The women are the ones who engage in
this task, and they begin it early in the morning, and it often requires
half a day to complete." Remember what God said to Adam: "By the
sweat of your face you shall eat bread."

Sue Becker, in her excellent article "Do Not Eat the Bread of Idleness,"
writes about how wheat was milled in the US prior to the 1900s:

"Prior to the 1900's most flour was milled locally and the bread
baked at home. God designed the wheat kernel, as well as other
grains, to perfectly store the nutrients within. Once broken open,
as in milling, the nutrients immediately begin to oxidize. Within
about 72 hours, 90% of over 30 nutrients are virtually gone due to
oxidation. Also since the germ oil causes the flour to turn rancid
very quickly, only enough grain was ground fresh each day to meet
the needs of the community. This meant that just about every
family was "gathering" their manna daily. However, in the 1920's
new technology allowed enterprising millers to separate the wheat
components. By removing the germ, germ oil, and the bran, the
remaining white flour could be stored indefinitely. This began to
eliminate the need for local milling and people began to relinquish
their own responsibility of preparing their bread daily.

Lucrative markets were also found for the nutritious "by-products"

of this new milling process. The bran and wheat germ were sold as
high protein food supplements for cattle. Local mills soon went out
of business as the large roller mills produced huge volumes of long
lasting white flour.

This appeared to be a great advance in technology. In just a short

time, however, cases of beriberi and pellagra began to drastically
increase. Both of these diseases are the result of vitamin B
deficiencies and health officials traced the problem to the new
white flour. The new milling process strips the B vitamins as well as
about 24 other nutrients from the wheat kernels.

Health officials urged mills to return to producing whole wheat

flour again but they did not want to lose their very profitable
market of selling the germ and bran as cattle feed. Instead, millers
chose to "enrich" the white flour by replacing 4 vitamins for the 25-
30 that are removed. This solved the problem of beriberi and
pellagra, however, we are now plagued with many diseases that are
directly related to our consumption of white flour (appendicitis,
diverticular disease, hiatal hernia, heart disease, diabetes, obesity
and more!)."

So by trying to circumvent God's curse and alter the wheat as God gave
it to man, health problems arose as a result of what we ate. There is a
huge market now of those who are selling home grain mills in the US, so
that people can grind their own wheat and bake real bread as God
intended it. Of course grinding your own flour and baking your own
bread takes time.... "By the seat of your face you shall eat bread..." Are
we so willing to sacrifice our health for the sake of convenience?

Similarly, in Asia, where rice is the main grain staple of billions of

people, polished white rice has now become the standard for modern
societies. In poorer communities, people still mill their rice by hand,
producing brown rice with most of the bran still intact. But at some
point, white rice, which is polished rice milled by machine where the
bran has been removed, became known as the rice of the rich, and much
preferable over the "poor man's" brown rice. The result? As with
processed wheat, vitamin B deficiencies were found in people who
consumed large amounts of polished white rice, with a significant
increase in beriberi, especially among children. An enterprising
company here in the Philippines started collecting all the rice bran from
the rice mills, which is used primarily in animal feeds, and started
marketing it as a vitamin supplement to fight against beriberi.

Here in the Philippines, you cannot find brown rice anywhere in the
markets. So we grow our own rice, and when we take it to the local mill,
we have them turn off their polishers. We get brown rice, but a lot of
the unmilled rice, with the husk still in tact, gets through, so that we
have to spend time separating it from the cookable rice. It takes some
work, and the rice won't store as long, but then again God said, "By the
sweat of your face you shall eat..."

Dairy Products

According to Dr. Rex Russell, in his book "What the Bible Says About
Healthy Living," the sale of pasteurized milk was at one time against
the law in the US, because it was associated with health problems.
Powerful political lobbyists for the dairy industry eventually had the
law overturned. Pasteurization gives milk a longer shelf life and makes
it more marketable. But at what price?

Pasteurization involves heating milk to 160 degrees for 45 minutes. As

Dr. Russell reports, "Before it is pasteurized, whole milk contains many
healthy proteins, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. A prime example is
the vitamin folic acid. A 1982 study reported that pasteurization
denatures enzymes, decreasing the bioavailability of the folic acid and
other nutrients found in raw milk. The heating in the process also
destroys some of the vitamins and nutrients. The altered protein
probably results in some people being allergic to dairy products.
Calcium absorption is also decreased." Many health experts today
believe that consuming pasteurized milk on a regular basis builds up
mucous within our bodies and is the leading factor in colds, allergies,
and other respiratory ailments suffered by people in modern societies.

So what is one to do if store-bought milk is harmful to your health

(including other diary products made from pasteurized milk, like cheese
and yogurt?) Remember the days of the "family cow?" Don't have
room anywhere to keep a cow? How about a goat? Numerous studies
show that raw goat's milk is much more healthful for humans than
cow's milk. If you can't manage a goat either, you could always contact
a local dairy or co-op to try and arrange buying raw milk. But of course
all of these options are inconvenient and require a lot of work.....

Sugars

Another common problem with diets in modern societies is the use of

refined sugars. Sugar in its natural form, such as the sugar in fruits,
honey, or sugar cane, contain an abundance of the B-vitamins which are
necessary for our bodies to digest and metabolize sugar. Refined sugar
has the B-vitamins processed out, and so the refined sugar we eat looks
for the B-vitamins from other sources in our body. The result? Vitamin
B deficiencies, which lead to rotten teeth, obesity, frequent infections,
allergies, hyperactivity, blood clots, increased risk of heart attacks,
gallstones, colon cancer, appendicitis, ulcers, chronic fatigue, and
immune disorders. The solution? Eat sugar in the natural forms God
created it: including honey and fruits. Honey is rich in amino acids,
enzymes, and minerals. The Bible speaks positively about honey in
many places, such as Proverbs 24:13, "My son, eat honey, for it is
good..."

Eliminating refined sugar from your diet will not be easy though, as
most packaged and processed foods we buy in stores contain it. Look
for, and avoid, these other names for refined sugar that you will see on
the list of ingredients: sucrose, dextrose, fructose, lactose, dextrin,
maltose, monosaccharides, disaccharides, and syrup (like corn syrup.)

Oils

In the 1930s and 1940s, health experts advocated a high-fat diet in the
US. Today, health "experts" advocate a low fat diet. I wonder, were
people generally healthier in the 30s or 40s than they are today, or has a
low-fat diet created healthier people? The fact is that our bodies need
fat. The current belief that cholesterol from fat is the cause of all kinds
of diseases and health problems apparently is based on spurious
evidence. This is the conclusion of experts such as Dr. Rex Russell, Dr.
Mary Enig, Dr. Raymond Peat, Dr. James Balch, Dr. Udo Erasmus, Dr.
Petr Skrabanek, among others.

Dr. Rex Russell, in his book "What the Bible Says About Healthy
Living," states that low blood cholesterol is associated with an increased
incidence of leukemia. He cites the case of Jim Fixx, the runner, who
lowered his fat intake to approximately 10 percent and had a blood
cholesterol level of 95, and then died of leukemia. Russell also states the
example of Nathan Pritikin, who at age 40 had advanced hardening of
the arteries, and cut his fat intake to 7 percent to get his cholesterol level
down to 95. He also died of leukemia.

There are good fats and there are bad fats. The Bible talks positively
about certain fats, such as olive oil and the fats from dairy products.
There is plenty of scientific research to back up the fact that these fats
are good. Another great fat is (unrefined) coconut oil. Bad fats would
include margarine, along with all refined oils. Dr. Russell states that
fully processed oils are stripped of most of their vitamins and minerals,
and are the equivalent of refined (white) sugars. Like white sugar, they
are nutrient-deficient sources of calories and contain toxins. A recent
study shows that heart patients who ate margarine had twice as many
heart attacks as those who ate butter. Fats that the Bible prohibit in the
Old Testament are animal fats found on cattle, sheep, and goats, and the
fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals.

As far as good fat, it would seem that the advice from the 30s and 40s is
more consistent with what the Bible teaches: "You can enjoy the fat of
the land." (Genesis 45:18)

Meat

When man began to eat animals, meat, is not certain. It was probably
fairly soon after the Fall, as we see in Genesis 3:21 that God made
garments of animal skins to clothe Adam and Eve, and it is conceivable
that God showed them at this time how to butcher (and skin) animals,
and how to offer up animal sacrifices to himself. A few verses later we
read that Abel, one of their sons, "was a keeper of flocks," and offered
up to God an animal sacrifice. God accepted this animal sacrifice, but
did not accept the vegetation sacrifice of his brother Cain. Then in
Genesis 9, after the Flood, God told Noah, "Every moving thing that is
alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant." So
here we clearly see that God provides meat for man to eat. Therefore,
eating animals (meat) cannot be a sin. If there is any doubt on this,
notice that even God himself, when he appears to man in human form,
will eat meat. He did so when he met Abraham in Genesis 18 (Genesis
18:18), and Jesus also would have eaten meat at the Jewish festivals
where animals were sacrificed (see also Matthew 11:19 and John 21:9)

As far as eating meat, however, it should be noted that the Jews of both
the Old Testament and New Testament times did NOT eat meat
regularly, as part of their daily diet. Meat was only eaten on special
occasions, such as when special guests visited, as in the Genesis 18
passage mentioned above when the Lord visited Abraham. In the story
of the prodigal son, the father kills the fattened calf to make a feast for
him after he returns home. Notice the older brother's response in Luke
15:29-30, "Look! For so many years I have been serving you, and I have
never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a
kid, that I might be merry with my friends; but when this son of yours
came, who has devoured your wealth with harlots, you killed the fattened
calf for him." A "kid" here is a young goat. He complains that he
doesn't even get a kid for many years, while his wayward brother get
THE fattened calf. ("The" emphasized because there was apparently
only one.) Other times Jews would eat meat would be during their
festivals, like Passover. From what is recorded in scripture, the
ordinary every-day food of the Jews was fruits, vegetables, bread, olive
products (oil), dairy products (cheese, buttermilk, etc.), honey for
sweetener, and wine for drink.

Although Jews did eat meat on certain occasions, certain meat was
considered "unclean." Probably the most well-known forbidden meat is
pork. Scientific evidence on the problems associated with those who eat
pork suggest that God had hygienic reasons for calling pork unclean.
Dr. Rex Russell, in his book "What the Bible Says About Healthy
Living," reports on the findings of Jane Cahill of the Biblical
Archeological Review. She found upon examination of toilets in a Jewish
household in Jerusalem that there were no parasites or infectious agents
present, only pollen from the many fruits, vegetables and herbs that
they had eaten. But a similar study of Egyptian toilets found eggs from
Schistosoma, Trichinella, wire worm and tapeworms, all found in pork.
This suggests that people who don't eat pork generally don't have
problems with intestinal parasites.

Dr. Russell explains how pigs are different from other animals, like
cows. The digestive system of a pig is completely different. Pigs are
gluttonous, never knowing when to stop eating. Their stomach acids
become diluted because of the volume of food, allowing all kinds of
parasites, bacteria, viruses and toxins to pass through into the pigs
flesh. These toxins are then passed on to humans when they eat pork.
Also, pigs are good incubators of these toxins and viruses without
appearing to be ill themselves. A scientist at the University of Giessen's
Institute for Virology in Germany showed in a study of worldwide
influenza epidemics that pigs are the one animal that can serve as a
mixing vessel for new influenza viruses that may seriously threaten
world health. For example, if a pig is exposed to a human's DNA virus
and then a bird's virus, the pig mixes the two viruses, developing a new
DNA virus that is often extremely lethal for humans. These viruses have
already caused worldwide epidemics and destruction. Some scientists
have concluded that if we do not find a way to separate humans from
pigs, the whole earth's population could be at risk.

The other problem with even the "clean" meats in most modern
societies is that modern farming techniques inject livestock with growth
hormones and antibiotic medications in an effort to increase
production. 40% of all antibiotics sold in the US are fed or injected into
animals. Many of these chemicals remain in the meat and are passed on
to humans when they consume it. Also, many of these animals are now
developing a resistance to these medications and more and more of the
meat you buy in the market or store is infected with diseases such as
Salmonella or Ecoli. If one wants to avoid these chemicals and diseases,
you must buy organic meat.
Healthy Eating Habits

After reviewing the bad habits of modern societies above, let us look at
some healthy eating habits.

Organic

As stated above in the section on meat, it is always better to buy

produce and meat that is organically grown. Depending on the
standards used to determine something as organic, it usually means that
the food was grown without using chemicals, such as fertilizers,
preservatives, drugs, pesticides, etc. While organic food is usually more
expensive, you will save in the long run with better health! For a good
article on organic food, click here.

Raw

Most people in modern societies today eat too much cooked food.
Cooking most foods destroys many of its nutrients, especially enzymes.
This is especially true in regards to fruits and vegetables. To gain the
most benefits from the nutrients present in fruits and vegetables, they
should be eaten raw (and fresh!) Most health problems in modern
societies today can be traced to poor digestion. When enzymes are lost
due to cooking, our bodies are not able to digest food properly. In
addition, cooking can add toxins to our food. Many health experts,
including Dr. Balch, advocate a 50% raw food diet as a cure for many
ailments. Digestive enzymes have become a huge market in recent days
due to the knowledge that most diseases come from poor digestion and
enzyme deficiencies. The best way to increase your enzyme intake is by
eating fresh, organic raw foods. This would include sprouts, which are
rich in enzymes. For a good article on enzymes, click here. For a good
article on sprouts, click here.

Beverages

Juicing

One of the best ways to increase your intake of fresh fruits and
vegetables is through juicing. By juicing, we are talking about making
juice yourself from organic fresh produce. Store-bought juices are
loaded with chemicals and preservatives, and usually refined sugar as
well. Fresh juices need to be drank immediately, as they quickly
deteriorate. Because fresh juices are loaded with vitamins, minerals,
enzymes, phytochemicals, antioxidants, etc., they are considered
"superfoods" and are even used in therapeutic ways today for a host of
all kinds of sicknesses, including cancer.

Juicing was one of the first nutritional changes we made in our family
diet. We invested in a good juicer and started adding fresh carrot and
other juices to our daily diet. The change in our family health was
immediate. For a good article on juicing, click here.

Fermented Beverages

In biblical times, fermented drinks were the standard drinks, and were
used for both sustenance and medicinal purposes. The wine of grapes
was by far the most common. Jesus drank wine and was accused as a
drunkard (Matthew 11:19, Luke 7:34), although the wine in common
use was probably diluted with an alcohol content of only around 1%. At
a wedding feast in Cana he turned water in to wine (John 2). Wine was
used for medicinal purposes both internally, as with Timothy's stomach
ailments (1 Timothy 5:23), and externally for dressing wounds as in the
story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 15).

In recent times studies prove the nutritional value of fermented drinks.

For example, the French people have the lowest incidence of heart
disease and cholesterol-related problems of any other country in
Europe, in spite of their modern diet. The reason? Many experts are
convinced that it is because of their choice of beverage: red wine. Dr.
James Balch, in his book "The Super Anti-Oxidants," relates a study
that shows 2 to 3 glasses of wine a day reduces death rates from all
causes by up to 30%!

Stephen Harrod Buhner, in his book "Sacred and Herbal Healing

Beers," comments on the nutritional value of yeasts in fermented
beverages, and how they enhance the nutrients of the herbs (e.g. grapes
or hops) used in fermentation. He states that when herbs are fermented,
the yeasts synthesize B-complex vitamins to foster fermentation. The
yeast itself also contains essential trace minerals, such as selenium,
chromium, and copper, in amounts comparable to fresh fruits and
vegetables. Yeast is also high in protein. Most fermented beverages also
contain high amounts of vitamin C.

Our fermented beverage of choice is Kombucha (see our product page.)

Water

Drinking plenty of water to flush out toxins from our body is also
essential to good health. Most people do NOT drink enough clean water
to enjoy its health benefits. Dr. Balch, in his book "Prescription for
Nutritional Healing," states:

"The human body is composed of approximately 70 percent water. In

fact, the body's water supply is responsible for and involved in nearly
every bodily process, including digestion, absorption, circulation, and
excretion. Water is also the primary transporter of nutrients
throughout the body and so is necessary for all building functions in
the body. Therefore, replacing the water that is continually being lost
through sweating and elimination is very important. To keep the body
functioning properly, it is essential to drink at least eight 8-ounce
glasses of quality water each day. While the body can survive without
food for about five weeks, the body cannot survive without water for
longer than five days."

Many experts state the rule of how much water you should drink each
day is half of your body weight in ounces. Hence, if you weigh 160
pounds, you should be drinking 80 ounces of water a day.

Drinking good clean water is another matter altogether. Don't trust

your tap water. Use a filtration system, or purchase quality bottled
water if you live in the city.

Fasting

Fasting is another useful component, and maybe even necessary, in

cleansing our body of the build-up of harmful toxins. When we deprive
the body of food, we give the digestive system a rest, and allow it to
cleanse itself more quickly. Energy that is normally spent in digesting
food, is used to heal the body. This is probably why we don't feel very
hungry often when we are sick. The digestive system needs a break.

God built into our systems a way of daily fasting, which is called sleep.
The name of our morning meal in English is aptly named "breakfast."
Unfortunately, because so many of us have so many toxins accumulated
over the years, a longer fast is often necessary. Dr. Balch, in his book
"Prescription for Nutritional Healing," recommends a three-day fast at
least once a month. This is a fasting from food, not beverages. During
this time he recommends drinking lots of water to flush out your body's
digestive system. In addition, fresh juices and herbal teas are
recommended during the fast.

Conclusion

Most health problems in modern societies today are a result of the foods
we eat. After the majority of the labor force left agriculture to move
into urban areas after the industrial revolution, technology had to be
developed to make up for the loss of agricultural manpower. The result
of this technology is a decrease in the nutritional value of the foods we
eat in modern societies, because of such practices as genetic engineering,
chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, chemical preservatives, etc.

The problems our modern diet create are well-known. In reading a

college chemistry text book recently I came across this statement:
"There is no doubt that we would get better nutrition if we ate nothing
but fresh food." Unfortunately, very few are advocating dealing with
the root problem of today's health problems by changing our dietary
habits. Two sentences later, in the same chemistry textbook, the author
asks, "Who wants to spend all the time it takes to gather fresh food and
prepare every item for every meal from scratch? Convenient foods are
indeed convenient." Much of this introductory college level chemistry
text book talks about the "problem" of over-population and the
"problem" of feeding a hungry world. The solutions proposed are
controlling birth rates so that the population doesn't increase faster
than food production, and developing better technology to increase
modern food production. How sad that these so-called "experts" fail to
see the inconsistencies in their own statements. The problem in NOT
over-population, and the solution is not better technology in either
agriculture or medicine. Mathematics already proves to us that if every
person in the world was given a one-square meter plot to stand in,
everybody in the world could fit in an area less than the size of the US
state of Texas. The problem is certainly NOT too many people. The
problem is that not enough people are working the land. In the US,
about 2% of the population feeds the other 98%! Modern history has
proven that we cannot escape God's curse on sin, "By the sweat of your
face you shall eat." Given a sufficient proportion of the labor force to
work the land, lack of food would never be a problem.

It seems unlikely that many will seriously deal with the problems of our
modern diet and health. To do so in a significant way would mean a
significant migration of the current urban population and labor force.
Most people would rather sacrifice their health for convenience. And
yet recent trends do show that many are starting to migrate out of
urban centers into rural areas, and the recent "hobby farm"
phenomenon is a trend that is likely continue as baby boomers move
into their later years thoroughly disgusted with the modern health care
system. The recent Y2K scare did much to educate people on the frailty
of our technological society and the imbalance of the division of labor
which has a very small percentage of our population feeding everyone
else. Our supply chains are very susceptible to economic or natural
calamities, and those dangers are still with us even though Y2K turned
out to be a no-show.
So take control of your health! Make the effort to eat and live healthy.
Don't sacrifice your health for the sake of convenience. The curse will
catch up with you!

Find Peace

How You can find Peace with

God
First, acknowledge God as the one who created you and has
exclusive rights to your life:

"This is what the Lord says; your redeemer who formed you in the
womb: I am the Lord who has made all things, who alone stretched
out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself." Isaiah 44:24
"I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I
will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that
from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know
there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form
the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I,
the Lord, do all these things." Isaiah 45:5-7

Second, admit that there is sin in your life, and confess it before
God:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
"There is no one righteous, not even one." Romans 3:10
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our
sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I John 1:9

Third, believe that God sent Jesus Christ to be the sacrafice for
your sins:

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that
whoever believes in him might not die, but have everlasting life."
John 3:16

Fourth, put your faith in God and receive the gift of eternal
salvation:

"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he
gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith; and this is not
of yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can
boast." Ephesians 2:8-9

Akapulko - Cassia Alata

Akapulko
Cassia Alata

Akapulko is a shrub that grows wild on Mt. Banahaw. The leaves contain
chrysophanic acid. The leaves are reported to be sudorific, diuretic and
purgative, being used in the same manner as senna. The leaves are
commonly used for ringworm and other skin diseases. The leaves in
decoction are also used to treat bronchitis and asthma. Because of it's anti-
fungal properties, it is a common ingredient in soaps, shampoos, and lotions
here in the Philippines. The Philippine Council for Health Research and
Development (PCHRD) has helped develop the technology for a akapulko
lotion. (see link below)

There has been much resource done on Banaba leaves and their ability to reduce blood
sugar, and its "insulin-like principle." In the Philippines, Banaba is a popular medicine
plant and is used in treatment of diabetes mellitus. It is high in corosolic acid which is
used in many treatments for diabetes. It is a natural plant insulin, can be taken orally,
and has no side effects, according to Japanese research.

Numerous studies have been done on this remarkable herb, much of it in Japan, with
researchers such as Dr. Yamazaki, professor of Pharmaceutical Science, Hiroshima
University School of Medicine. One study mixed banaba dried leaf powder with
chicken feeds, and then analyzed the yolk of the chicken egg. When the banaba
enriched egg yolk was fed to diabetic mice, their blood sugar level was normalized. In
another study, the alcohol extract of banaba leaves was sprayed into the air of a room
at night while the patient was sleeping via a mist generating device. It was found that
as the person slept, their lungs received trace amounts of corosolic acid which helped
regulate blood sugar levels.

Following the studies done by the Japanese which isolated corosolic acid as the active
component, other studies followed. In 1999 a clinical study was conducted on diabetes
patients by Dr. William V. Judy at the Southwestern Institute of Biomedical Research,
Brandenton, Florida, which found that corosolic acid universally lowered blood sugar
levels of all patients. The higher the dosage of corosolic acid, the lower blood sugar
levels dropped.

However, more recent studies have shown that the entire herb is useful in lowering
blood sugar, and that corosolic acid is probably not the only active ingredient in
banaba leaves. A study published in 2001 by Edison Biotechnology Institute,
Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Athens,
Ohio compared a whole leaf extract of banaba with insulin in cell cultures. They
concluded that the whole herb had a glucose lowering effect and could be used to fight
diabetes and obesity. A study reported in the Feb. 2002 volume of Planta Med stated
that corosolic acid alone could not account for the glucose transport effect of banaba
extracts, and identified at least three active components. (Go here to see details of these
studies.)

Unfortunately, most supplements available on the market today that contain banaba
extract have only corosolic acid extract. Tropical Traditions is one of the first to offer
a full herb supplement made from wild organic banaba leaves. Doctors here in the
Philippines have been using banaba together with ampalaya to successfully treat
diabetes patients. One such doctor claims to have 1000 ex-diabetes patients from a
formula of supplements composed of banaba and ampalaya. His work in treating
diabetics has been featured in local newspapers and television stations. Tropical
Traditions has been producing banaba and ampalaya capsules for three years, and they
have been used by Dr. Marie Onate, M.D., in her hospital in Lucena City successfully
during that time among her diabetes patients.

Because of the way banaba helps the body to handle glucose (glucose transport
activator), it is also used effectively in weight-loss products. Supplementwatch.com
says: "An interesting 'side-effect' of tighter control of blood sugar and insulin levels is
a significant tendency of banaba to promote weight loss (an average of 2-4 lbs. per
month) – without significant dietary alterations. It is likely that modulation of glucose
and insulin levels reduces total caloric intake somewhat and encourages moderate
weight loss." In Japan, Banaba tea has become quite popular. In the US, many weight-
loss formulas are now using banaba as a safe, natural component for reducing weight.

Lagundi is a common medicine shrub in the Philippines, and grows wild in many places like Mt.
Banahaw. The use of Lagundi for medicinal purposes has a long history in the Philippines. The
Philippine Department of Health has certified Lagundi as a medicinal plant for treatment in cases of
colds, flu, pharyngitis, and asthma. Today, pharmaceutical companies sell it in tablet form at drug
stores. A new cough syrup for children made from Lagundi is also on the market now. These
products are approved by the Bureau of Food and Drugs.

The Department of Science and Technology has performed numerous studies on Lagundi.
Phytochemical studies have revealed that Lagundi contains chrysoplenol D, a smooth muscle
relaxant with anti-histamine properties. It also contains isoorientin, casticin, luteolin-7-0-glucoside,
among other things which exhibit an anti-histamine effect. Lagundi also shows leukotriene release
inhibition, an important mechanism in controlling asthma.

Today doctors in the Philippine routinely prescribe Lagundi as a remedy for coughs or for asthma
relief.

Papaya
Carica Papaya
Papaya has a long history and proof of being a very effective medicinal plant. The leaves, fruits, stem
and roots all contain the proteolytic enzyme papain. Exhaustive studies have been done on papain, and
it is reported to be a true, soluble, digestive ferment or a mixture of ferments of vegetable origin, its
proteolytic action marked in acid, alkaline, and neutral solutions and also in the presence of many
chemicals, antiseptics, and therapeutic agents. It has a peculiar softening and disintegrating actions in
proteids, and its general proteolytic action is that of a genuine digestive ferment, similar to that of the
ferments of animal origin. It acts in the way rennet does upon milk, and has a pronounced digestive
power at a wide range of temperatures. Papain is used effectively as an anthelmintic. The leaves are
often employed as a remedy for asthma, and said to also be a heart tonic. The flowers have pectoral
properties. The fruit is used in cosmetics for a healthy skin complexion. The green fruit is laxative and
diuretic. Studies at the University of Nigeria have revealed that extracts of ripe and unripe papaya fruits
and of the seeds are active against gram-positive bacteria. Strong doses are effective against gram-
negative bacteria. The substance has protein-like properties.

PAPAYA

Temptation, Tropical-Style

119 calories per papaya

We're not alone in our view that nutrition has become far too complicated. Nor are we the only ones
who have attempted to simplify it. One of the approaches that has intrigued us is the concept of
"nutrient density. " It's a way of measuring bang for the buck: How much nutrition does a food deliver
for each calorie that it provides When a food's content of essential nutrients is weighed alongside its
calorie count, the results are often unexpected. For fruits, the most nutrient dense proved to be not the
orange or the legendary apple, but rather the cantaloupe and the papaya! Specifically, papaya stands
out with a vitamin A level that exceeds the Recommended Dietary Allowance by 30 percent, plus
enough vitamin C to meet a full day's allowance three times-all in one piece of this luscious fruit.

Not impressed yet? Consider the extremely high potassium content as well as the ample fiber that the
papaya provides. Now we're sure you agree that even though expensive, papayas give you your
money's worth. At the Market: Ripe papayas are green with overtones of yellow and creamy orange.
They will yield to gentle pressure and should be well shaped, reminding you of a large pear. The stem
end should smell softly sweet, not acrid or harsh. (334)

Sambong - Blumea Balsamifera

Sambong is a remarkable medicinal plant that grows wild in the Philippines. It is commonly used in
capsule form or as teas in the treatment of kidney disorders. Doctors in the Philippines routinely
prescribe Sambong now for the dissolution of kidney stones. Sambong is also known as a diuretic,
and is used in cases of hypertension and mild to moderate congestive heart failure. Sambong is high
in essential oils, and contains significant amounts of camphor oil.

Sambong is one of 10 herbs that have been approved by the Department of Health in the Philippines
as being effective in treating certain disorders. The department of Science and Technology has
conducted extensive tests on Sambong. Clinical studies, including double blind/placebo radomized
studies, have shown Sambong to be both safe and effective in the cases of kidney stones and
hypertension. There are Sambong products on the market now in the Philippines that have been
approved by the Bureau of Food and Drugs and are routinely prescribed by doctors.

The leaves of Sambong are also used as a tea in the Philippines, and as a cure for colds. It is also
said to have antidiarrhetic and antigastralgic properties. It is also used as an expectorant. It is given
for worms and dysentery. It is one of the most commonly used medicinal herbs in the Philippines.
