2019 Sustainable Denver Summit

Leading the Change

Welcome to Mayor Hancock’s Sustainable Denver Summit!

In an effort to come together and find solutions to innovate and grow, we are ready
to make bold changes in our city. When we put this event together, we sought out the
most cutting edge speakers and sponsors to inspire us on our path toward
sustainability. That being said, we want to address some of the concerns we received
about our Silver Sponsor, Suncor. Their executives are more concerned with profit
than taking responsibility for the worst air quality in the nation.

Suncor has a terrible record with worker safety. Their ageing equipment leaks toxic
chemicals and is at risk of explosion. By allowing Suncor to sponsor this event, we
have failed workers. If we truly want a sustainable city, we must address worker
safety protections and chemical clean up initiatives for neighborhoods impacted by
Suncor's relentless contaminating practices immediately.

We would like to formally apologize for enabling this sponsorship. For many years,
this event has continued a culture of incremental efforts and greenwashing that
diminishes the severity of the climate crisis. But that ends now.

The Mayor’s Office and the Office of the Governor are officially announcing a
Climate Emergency. This declaration calls for an immediate mobilization to
restore a safe climate to the city of Denver.

Thank you for your dedication to this work. We are now ready to take on the problem
at the scale it requires.
