Seven Types of Curriculum

Recommended Curriculum
o This refers to what scholars propose as the most appropriate curriculum for the learners.
o The Ministry of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, or any professional
organization can recommend and implement a curriculum.
In the Philippines, for example, what is being implemented by the Department of Education
(DepEd) or the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is an example of a recommended
curriculum.

Written Curriculum
o This refers to the official curriculum embodied in approved state curriculum guides
(Glatthorn et.al 2006). It is the curriculum prescribed by the government.
o This kind of curriculum needs to be pilot tested or tried out in sample schools to
determine its effectiveness.
In the Philippine context, these are the prescribed courses from different government
agencies; the Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Administration (TESDA).
Examples of this type curriculum are:
- The Kindergarten Curriculum Standards
- The K-12 Curriculum
- CHED Memorandum Order No. 20, Series of 2013 (for General Education)
- TESDA Modules and Competencies

Supported Curriculum
o This refers to the curriculum that is reflected on and shaped by the resources allocated to
support or deliver the official curriculum.
Example:
o Instructional materials, such as textbooks, audio visual materials, and others are examples
of support curriculum.
Taught Curriculum
o This refers to the actual implementation of the curriculum or what teachers in the school
teach.
Example:
o Whatever is being taught or an activity being done in the classroom is a taught
curriculum.

Tested Curriculum
o This is a set of learning that is assessed in teacher-mode classroom tests, curriculum-
referenced tests, and in standardized tests.
Example:
o When students take a quiz or the mid-term ad final exams, these series of evaluation are
the so-called assessed curriculum.

Learned Curriculum
o Refers to the result of the curriculum or what students actually learned in school. Learned
curriculum reveals whether the students learned or whether the school are successful in
attaining their curriculum goals and objectives.

Hidden Curriculum
o Refers to various skills, knowledge and attitudes that students learn in school as a result
of their interaction with other students, staff, and faculty members. Although hidden
curriculum is not actually taught in formal classroom learning, it can be a product of the
students schooling.
