PART – A
(Compulsory Question)

1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Write the two conditions that must be met for envelope detection to properly detect original modulating
signal in AM detection.
(b) Give the expressions for Hilbert transform of a signal x(t) both in time and frequency domains.
(c) An Fm signal with simple tone modulation has frequency deviation of 15 kHz and a bandwidth of 50 kHz.
Find the frequency of modulating signal.
(d) Why do you need pre emphasis and de-emphasis in FM broadcasting?
(e) Write expression for quadrature representation of narrowband noise and define each component in the
expression.
(f) Determine the autocorrelation for a DSB modulation process where is a wide
sense stationary random process & is an random variable uniformly distributed order (0, 2 and
independent of .
(g) State sampling theorem.
(h) Draw the circuit diagram for generating PWM signal.
(i) A memory less sources emits six messages with probabilities 0.3, 0.25, 0.15, 0.12, 0.1 and 0.08. Find the

(j) State Shannon-Hartley theorem.

UNIT – I
2 (a) Explain working principle of a ring modulator with suitable sketches.
(b) Using Hilbert transform, derive the expression for SSB signal in the time domain.

3 (a) Prove that under the best conditions (i.e for modulation index ), only one third of the transmitted power
is used for carrying messages in AM.
(b) Explain the operation of envelope detector for AM with suitable sketches.
UNIT – II
4 Give the systematic procedure with suitable expressions and figures to estimate the bandwidth of a
wideband FM wave.

5 (a) With suitable sketches, explain about superheterodyne analog FM receiver.

30dB. What is the corresponding carrier to noise ratio?

8 Narrate the terms sensitivity, selectivity and fidelity of a radio receiver with suitable examples.

9 Discuss about pulse amplitude modulator & demodulator with suitable circuit diagrams. Also discuss
about two applications of pulse modulation schemes.
UNIT – V
10 State and explain the term entropy, conditional entropy, mutual information & channel capacity.

11 Derive the expression for channel capacity of Binary symmetric channel in terms of probability of error.
