Voice/Unvoiced sounds
Many consonant sounds differ only if it is voice or unvoiced. Voiced is a sound in which the vocal cords
vibrate, and an unvoiced sound is one in which the vocal cords do not vibrate.
/P/ and /B/ are produced in the same position in the mouth. The difference is that /P/ is unvoiced, while /B/ is
voiced. Put your hand on your throat as you say the pairs below to feel the difference.
There are other consonant sounds that are always voiced (nasals, liquids and glides). The Glottal sound /h/ is
fully unvoiced.
Phonic Story
By Alistair Hayward
When I was a child, my Father said “Son, now that you nearly nine, how about we go out on a tour and see more of
the world?!”
I replied. “Yes Dad, I would want that, thanks!”
He took me out in his red car. The sun was shining, the wind was in my hair and I felt happy!
First we saw animals. We saw a very big cat at the zoo, and a rare bird that had lived there for ten years.
“Do you know the name of that bird, my boy?” asked my father.
“Yes father, its here in my book, in plain English,” I replied. “She is from Japan and there are only five left in the
world!”
“I saw this bird on television once, and another time on a stamp,” he said.
The tour was rather short: he bought me a new pen and then we went home for tea!
