1.1.2 Procedures
2.1 Introduction
The Configuration Tool is used to customize FIRSTVISION’s graphical user interface (GUI) to your
buildings’ fire systems. An authorized event responder will use your customized GUI to identify
the location of and respond to events that FIRSTVISION annunciates.
After your GUI design is completed, you will copy your exported GUI design (site.xml, Floorplans
folder, and Resources folder for campuses with customized icons) to FIRSTVISION, overwriting that
same file and folder contents on FIRSTVISION. The copying function can be accomplished using
various connection methods. Your copy method will be contingent on your computer connection.
• If FIRSTVISION and your computer are both part of a TCP/IP network you can copy your GUI
design to FIRSTVISION over that network.
• The USB connector on the FIRSTVISION can be used (i.e. connect a flash memory stick and
copy your GUI design files).
NOTE: You must reboot the FIRSTVISION machine any time you update site.xml, in order for the
FIRSTVISION application to use the updated site information.
After you have copied your GUI design files and rebooted, verify that building information such as
floor layouts and icon locations are displaying appropriately on FIRSTVISION.

Resources (if present) folders into "C:\FacilitiesMonitoring\FIT" path in FirstVision machine.
NOTE: You must reboot the FIRSTVISION machine any time you update site.xml, in order for the
FIRSTVISION application to use the updated site information.
NOTE: All procedures are written with the assumption that your PC mouse clicking operations
use default settings for left and right mouse clicks.
NOTE: Always use 1280 x 1024 screen resolution when running the Configuration Tool to
ensure the floor plans you design appear as expected within FIRSTVISION.
NOTE: We recommend viewing the Configuration Tool using the Normal size DPI display
setting. (From the Windows taskbar, click Start ➪ Control Panel ➪ Display ➪ Settings ➪
Advanced ➪ Normal size (96 DPI)).
• CD-ROM Drive
• 1.0 GHz CPU
• 512 MB of RAM
• 10 MB of free hard-disk space
The Configuration Tool MUST be operated in an English version of Windows. However it can be
used to create a building design for our supported localized versions of FIRSTVISION, if the
"Configuration Tool Non-English Windows Language Requirements" are met. Site plans are
automatically localized when they are created on computers properly configured for the target
language.
See Appendix A, “Our Supported Localized Versions of FirstVision”.
NOTE: Change the resolution of your PC display settings to 1280X1024 and use the Normal
size DPI display setting to optimize Configuration Tool display viewing.
You will need to have this information available to complete your building information
configuration tasks.
Building Properties:
Required Information:
The Label field is the only required field, as indicated by the asterisk which appears next to it.
Building Contacts:
There is no required information for building contacts. The number of selected contacts
Optional Information:
You may enter up to four additional contact types using the initially blank fields at the bottom of the
Building Contacts list.
Shutoff Icons
Five icons are provided to mark shutoff controls for various systems. These are:
• Gas Shutoff
• Halon Shutoff
• HVAC Shutoff
• Power Shutoff
• Sprinkler Shutoff
Check or clear the box beside the Contact Type column, to select which contact rows are displayed
when the icon representing an individual shutoff device is selected from within the FIRSTVISION
application. Choose from the Building Contacts entered for this building (see “” on page 13).
Contact types which would normally be appropriate are selected by default. For example, by
default the Water Company contact is shown for a sprinkler shutoff.
Custom Label
You may enter a description of the shutoff device in the Custom Label field. Information in the
Custom Label field of a Primary Shutoff icon appears in the Building Properties display in the
FIRSTVISION application. This field is limited to 40 characters. For more information, refer to
“Building Primary Shutoff Designation” on page 16.
A maximum of one shutoff device, per shutoff device type, per building can function as the
building primary shutoff. Information in the Custom Label field of a Primary Shutoff icon appears
in the Building Properties display in the FIRSTVISION application.
Check the box beside Primary Shutoff for the Building to make a device function as the primary
shutoff device, of its type, for the building. If the Primary Shutoff for the Building box is checked
in the properties of more than one device of the same type in a building, the last device to have its
properties changed functions as the primary shutoff.
2.6.2 Create Site and Floor Plan Images to Import Before Starting
You will need a graphic editing program for creating and/or resizing the graphics backgrounds. Use
the Configuration Tool to import drawing files (raster or vector) that you created in graphic
software applications for your buildings’ floor plans and the site plan background. The better the
resolution of the background in the Configuration Tool the better the resolution on FIRSTVISION.
The pixel width of your graphic determines the sizing of the background in FIRSTVISION’s window.
FIRSTVISION’s window, where your building design is displayed, has these pixel dimensions:
960 x 768 pixels
The supported graphic formats that can be imported into the Configuration Tool as a background
are:
• Vector Files
• Windows® Meta Files (.WMF) file types can be imported into the Configuration Tool. The
WMF file type typically degrades less in visual display quality than a raster file when it is
rescaled; so it is the preferred file type for floorplan backgrounds.
• Raster Files
• Bit Map (BMP), Graphic Image Format (GIF), and Joint Photographic Experts (JPG) files
types can be imported into the Configuration Tool. However those files types degrade more
in visual display quality than a vector file.
Tips for Creating Background Images
• Eliminate white space around the image.
• Create or scale vector images to fit within a 13.5" width x 10.5" height image area.
• After scaling a vector image, adjust line weights and font sizes as necessary.
• The Configuration Tool scales images to fit the 960 x 768 display window size.
• The installation program has added an entry for the Configuration Tool in the Windows Start
All Programs menu.
• The first time you start the Configuration Tool, you must select <Create New Campus> to open
the Configuration Tool; it will not start unless you do.
• Each time the Configuration Tool is started you are required to make a choice about whether to
start a new campus design or to open an existing campus design; it will not start unless you do.
2.7.2 About Saving and Deleting Campus Designs and Exiting the
Configuration Tool
NOTE: It is recommended that you save your campus design frequently while working with the
Configuration Tool, to safeguard your work.
When a current campus design is being edited a version of it is temporarily stored but it is not
updated until you save the campus design using the Save command (the
C:\FacilitiesMonitoring\FITConfig\fit.mdb file is updated with the Save command).
• To discard unwanted changes to a campus design, use the Exit command.
• To leverage the campus design being edited use the Save Campus As... command.
• To load a saved campus into the configuration tool for modification, use the Open Campus
command.
• To delete an open campus, use the Delete Campus command.
NOTE: An updated version of the campus design’s site.xml file is not created until you export
the campus design. For more information, please refer to “Prepare Your Campus Design for
Copying to FIRSTVISION” on page 45.
slide bar
NOTE: Sorting the list of objects on a floor makes the list easier to work with, but does not have
any other effect on the floor or the objects.
• Use the slide bar (which appears when the tree grows too large for the page) to move the
display up and down in an expanded Campus Layout tree.
Icon and Campus Layout Tree Interdependences
Clicking on a device in the Campus Layout tree will display its respective icon (with handles) in the
Building Plan window. Clicking on an icon in the Building Plan window highlights the device.
NOTE: Icon handles may also be used to resize individual objects. See the discussion under
“How To Add and Define the Properties for the Devices for Each Floor in a Building” on page 29.
Step 1. From the Configuration Tool Options menu, select Search Device/Camera.
Or, to find a camera, select RECCTV from the Type menu, enter then camera number and
select the DVR/Connection Name, and then click Search.
The Building Plan window jumps to the appropriate floor, where your target device or
module is shown selected.
These steps are a suggested method to customize FIRSTVISION to your campus’ life safety
monitoring system. Some of the steps may be performed in an order other than the one shown here.

Buttons
NOTE: Even though most of the information in these fields is not required, remember that this
information will be displayed at FIRSTVISION and it is used and interpreted by the event responder.
Step 4. Click Apply to save entered information while the window remains open, or OK to save
entered information and close the window.
Step 5. Continue with "Add and Define the Properties for the Levels in a Building" or "How To
Add Campus Information".
NOTE: You may want to do other building design tasks before attempting to design your
campus site plan because the steps you will use to create other components of your building
designs will familiarize you with the steps you will use to create your campus site design.
Step 3. Save your campus design and continue with “Add and Define the Properties for the Levels
in a Building” on page 24.
2.8.2 Add and Define the Properties for the Levels in a Building
This task is where you enter the total number of floors in a building and provide additional
information about each of those floors. A floor entry will correspond to a “numbered” button icon
on FIRSTVISION. The floor entry at the bottom on the Campus Layout tree will be displayed as the
lowest floor button in the floor button column on FIRSTVISION. It will also always be the floor that
displays on FIRSTVISION at power up or when FIRSTVISION is restarted.
NOTE: It is absolutely critical to understand how entries made in any Properties window appear
in the Campus Layout tree, and how both relate to what is displayed on FIRSTVISION.
After your campus design is exported and copied to FIRSTVISION, you will see how Properties
entries relate to the Campus Layout tree and the Building Plan window (see Figure 2.13,
“Configuration Tool Floor Entries”). If your Campus Layout tree does not exhibit the needed or
your desired hierarchy; see “Verify Your Campus Design is Correct in the Campus Layout Tree” on
page 42 for details on modifying its hierarchy.
The range buttons are automatically calculated by the software application; the range cannot be set
in the Configuration Tool or manipulated in FIRSTVISION itself. For example, a maximum of
eleven individual floor buttons in one column will display; with the addition of a 12th floor, your
building’s range of buttons will be automatically calculated and be grouped similar to the buttons as
shown in following figure. A maximum of 99 floors can be entered.
Add a Floor
Step 1. From the Main Menu, click Graphics Add Floor. A default Floor name will display in
the Campus Layout tree.
Step 2. Repeat the this process until the desired number of floors has been added.
NOTE: Floors in the Campus Layout tree can be dragged and dropped or cut and pasted to
change their position in the tree. The Floor Label Property field should be renumbered to match
its new position.
NOTE: Remember, this information is displayed at FIRSTVISION and must be interpreted by the
event responder.
Step 3. Click Apply (save/window remains open) or OK (save/window closes) to enter the
information into the campus database.
Step 4. Save your campus design and continue with "Add a Background for Each Floor of a
Building".
Step 3. Use the Windows Explorer to locate and select the desired background image. The
background image is added in the Building Plan window.
A background image with a maximum size 960 x 768 pixels fits the FIRSTVISION window
properly. If your background image is different from that size, then the Configuration
Tool will scale the image to fit the width of the window.
NOTE: Once the background is added into the Configuration Tool there is no electronic linkage
to that file. If changes are made to a background file and it is saved over the existing background
file, the outdated background must be deleted and then the new version must be added using the
Add Background command.
Step 4. Position the background image exactly the same for each floor in a building using a drag
and drop method.
Positioning all the floor plan backgrounds at the same screen position ensures viewing
consistency when navigating between floors views on FIRSTVISION. This also ensures
Multi-level icons (elevators, stairs, etc.) are aligned consistently between floors.
Step 5. Save your campus design and continue with "Add and Define Properties for the Devices
on Each Floor in a Building".
2.8.5 Add and Define Properties for the Devices on Each Floor in a
Building
This task is where you add and define the properties for all addressable devices on a given floor in
a building and then position their corresponding icons over the floor plan background.
FIRSTVISION Action and Its Relationship to This Configuration Tool Entry
When the event responder touches a floor number icon that is indicating it has an event taking
place, the addressable device that registers the first event will display and stay on. Any subsequent
addressable devices that registers an off normal event will begin flashing in the order they
experience their event.
Addressable device graphic icons are not displayed on FIRSTVISION unless they have registered an
off normal condition. When they are displayed touching them will display the information
identifying the device.
• The Custom Label is displayed if there is one.
How To Add and Define the Properties for the Devices for Each Floor in a
Building
You will need information about all the addressable devices in order to complete this task.
NOTE: The information about the devices added to a building using this method is not extracted
and therefore must be accurately entered into the fields. For device extraction you can only use a
VeriFire® database. See “Importing a VeriFire Database to Start Your Campus Design” on
page 49 for more information.
Position each addressable device at its location over the floor plan background for each floor in
your building as accurately as possible.
Step 1. Click the floor’s name displayed in the Campus Layout tree.
Step 2. From the main menu, select Graphics Add Object Device (device type) from the
list choices or click on the desired icon shown next to Device.
• The addressable device graphic icon appears in the Building Plan window.
• A device icon entry is added below its floor plan entry in the Campus Layout tree.
NOTE: FIRSTVISION monitors only SLC loop devices of the format LxxDyyy or LxxMyyy.
Step 3. The following steps can be performed in any sequence but all steps must be performed for
all addressable devices.
• Add another addressable device graphic icon. This will place the addressable devices
next to the previously added icon.
• Position each addressable device graphic icon at its location in floor plan.
NOTE: Remember, this information is displayed at FIRSTVISION and must be interpreted by the
event responder.
NOTE: Camera Properties—When adding a camera to a floor plan or site plan, you must
specify the name of the DVR which connects the camera to the CCTV network. For more
information, please refer to “Add a DVR to the Rapid Eye® Closed Circuit Television (RECCTV)
Network” on page 47.
Step 4. Set the viewing option "Database Labels" for the devices icons if desired. This choice is
on or off and its setting is a retained setting for the application; it is not retained for an
individual campus design. The database label of an annotation is always displayed (the
label is the text of the annotation itself).
Step 5. If desired, use the handles on object icons to change the size of the icon as it will appear in
FIRSTVISION. Each object retains its own icon size. For example, you may have both small
smoke detector icons and large smoke detector icons on the same floor plan. Resized icons
retain their original proportions.
Step 6. If you want to move or relocate a device icon to another floor; refer to “To Relocate an
Object(s) from One Floor to Another Floor” on page 44.
Step 7. Save your campus design and continue with "Add and Define Building Contents and
Apparatuses".
graphic icon appears in the Building Plan window and an entry is added below the floor
plan name in the Campus Layout tree.
Step 3. The following steps can be performed in any sequence for any Multi-Level icon:
• Add another Multi-Level graphic icon.
• Position each Multi-Level graphic icon at its location in the floor plan.
• Define the Common properties of the Multi-Level graphic icon by selecting and right-
clicking the graphic icon, and then entering the information in the Properties window.
For this example we will use Elevator.
Step 4. Duplicate the location of the Multi-Level icon on the floors in your building.
a. In the Floor Access field:
• Range Selection: press and hold down the Shift key and select a floor in the list,
then click another floor somewhere in the list. All entries between the two floors
are selected.
• Individual Selection: press and hold down the Ctrl key, click a floor and it is
selected.
b. Click Apply or OK.
The Multi-Level icon is copied in the exact same position on each floor that has been
selected in the Floor Access field.
• If a Multi-Level icon is deleted, its counterparts on all floors are deleted.
• If a Multi-Level icon is moved, its counterparts on all floors are moved.
Step 3. Set the viewing option "Labels" for the icons if desired. This choice is on or off and its
setting is a retained setting for the application; it is not retained for an individual campus
design.
Step 4. Save your campus design and continue with "Add Other Information".
The Chemical Editor records the properties of hazardous materials, so their information can be
associated with HAZMAT Area icons. The Chemical Editor comes with a catalogue of over 120
predefined hazardous chemicals and their Health Hazard, Flammability, Reactivity and Special
Hazard indications. You can also add custom chemicals and designate their indications. Finally, you
can associate a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) in .PDF format with any chemical, whether
custom or predefined.
NOTE: MSDS .PDF files must be compatible with Adobe Acrobat 7.0. An MSDS file may be
multiple pages; system resources are the only factor limiting .PDF file size. Hyperlinks within a
.PDF file remain active when accessed from with the FIRSTVISION application. They may be used
to navigate throughout a multiple-page MSDS.PDF file.
about adding HAZMAT Area and related building contents icons, refer to “Add Other
Information” on page 37.
Add Annotations
Annotations are labels, up to 50 characters long, that can be added to your floor plan to provide
additional information to responders.
Use the icon handles to refine the layout of your vertically oriented annotations.
NOTE: Remember, this information is displayed at FIRSTVISION and must be interpreted by the
event responder.
• Define the properties of the Other graphic icon by right-clicking the graphic icon, and
then entering the information in the Properties window.
Step 4. Save your campus design and continue with "Verify Your Campus Design is Correct in the
Campus Layout Tree".
NOTE: Once you configure a custom icon for an object, each instance of that object on that
campus appears with your custom icon—even instances you added to a floor plan before you
customized the icon.
Your custom icon now appears in the Configuration of Custom Icons window.
NOTE: From this screen you can also Restore Default Icons, as well as Import Custom Icons
from any other building design you have previously exported to XML (see Section 2.9.2, “How To
Export Your Building Design for Copying to FIRSTVISION”, on page 48).
NOTE: A new campus design uses the 3D-type icons by default. Site plans upgraded from
previous versions use their custom icon set, if available, or the older flat default icon set. To use
the 3D-type icons with an upgraded campus, import the icons from a newly created campus.
Step 3. Check or clear the boxes beside event types to select whether each event type will open
the FIRSTVISION unit door and/or play an alert sound.
Step 4. Click OK.
NOTE: The sequence of floors in FIRSTVISION corresponds exactly to the sequence of floors in
the Campus Layout tree. Make sure that your floors are ordered correctly here, from bottom to
top.
NOTE: Multi-level objects cannot be relocated using the cut and paste method.
Step 1. Right-click the floor to be repositioned in the Campus Layout tree and then select Cut
Floor from the list of choices. The scissor icon displays adjacent to the cut floor.
Step 2. Right-click the floor that will be above where the cut floor will be inserted and then select
Paste Floor from the list of choices.
The floor is relocated in the Campus Layout tree.
Step 3. Redefine the Properties of the relocated floor. (Refer to “Add and Define the Properties
for the Levels in a Building” on page 24 for information).
NOTE: Multi-level objects cannot be relocated using the cut and paste method.
Step 1. Click the floor in the Campus Layout tree to display the floor and objects to be relocated.
Step 2. Click an object to be relocated. The text entered into the Properties window's Custom
Label field appears above the Building Plan window.
Step 3. Right-click the selected object to display the list of choices and select Cut Object from the
list. A colored border displays on the bottom and right side of the icon in the Building
Plan window, and scissors appear next to selected icons in the Campus Layout tree to
indicate the icon will be cut.
• To select multiple objects press and hold down the Shift key and click other objects.
The Custom Label is not displayed when multiple objects are selected.
• Press the Esc key to deselect all objects selected to be Cut.
Step 4. Right-click the floor in the Campus Layout tree where you want to paste the objects and
select Paste Object from the list of choices. The pasted objects appear in the Campus
Layout tree and the Building Plan window.
NOTE: FIRSTVISION1.5 (and above) must be used with NOTI FIRE NET™ gateway versions 3.x
and above.
NOTE: The Network Configuration window displays information about network gateways
already configured for the campus. Entries in the Building Name column show which buildings
contain network devices supported by a given network.
Step 6. You may also enter an IP address for a Redundant Gateway. If FIRSTVISION cannot
communicate with a Gateway, it will try to communicate through the Redundant Gateway
if one has been configured.

The Configuration Tool creates a folder and an XML file as shown in the following
figure...
NOTE: A Resources folder is only created when your exported campus design includes
customized icons. See Section 2.8.7, “Configure Custom Icons”, on page 39.
NOTE: Modifying the XML file with an XML Editor is not supported.
Step 5. You should now perform the steps in Section 3, "Enabling FIRSTVISION to Monitor A
Campus" of the ONYX® FirstVision™ Installation and Operation Manual, PN 53034.
NOTE: We recommend you copy your new campus files directly over any existing campus files.
Do not delete the old campus files before copying.
NOTE: You must reboot the FIRSTVISION machine any time you load a new set of campus files
(site.xml and other files), in order for the FIRSTVISION application to use the updated site
information.
NOTE: During import the Device Data properties (Node, Sub-Node, and Address fields) and the
Database Label field will be updated with Label, Extended Label and Zone Label information from
the VeriFire Database.
2.10.1 Overview
VeriFire Database Import Recommendation
It is recommend that you start with a blank building design when importing a VeriFire database.
However, it is not absolutely necessary that you do so. After you import your VeriFire database the
addressable device graphic icons created during the import may need to be cut and pasted
throughout floors in your building design.
After you import a VeriFire database, a new floor is added to the Campus Layout tree.
• That new floor can be renamed and repositioned in the Campus Layout tree (refer to “Verify
Your Campus Design is Correct in the Campus Layout Tree” on page 42).
• Other graphic icons and a floor plan background can be added to the new floor (refer to
“Creating the Campus Design that is Displayed on FIRSTVISION” on page 21).
VeriFire Database Import Icons
The following table shows the default icon that will be assigned when a VeriFire database is
imported. You can not change that icon usage. To use a different icon, you will have to delete the
default icon and manually add the device back into (define its properties) the campus layout using
the desired icon.

Step 2. Right-click the new building name, and then select Import Devices from DB from the
menu that appears.
Step 3. Select the name of the network to which the devices in the VeriFire database are assigned.
Step 4. Use Windows Explorer to locate and select the desired VeriFire database.
Step 5. Click Open.
Step 6. In the left pane, click each node to be imported and move it to the right pane by
clicking .
The software application adds a new floor to the building and populates it with the
VeriFire devices. This invalidates the hierarchy in the Campus Layout tree that is
absolutely critical when it is exported. For information on how to change the Campus
Layout tree hierarchy see “Verify Your Campus Design is Correct in the Campus Layout
Tree” on page 42.
NOTE: Importing a VeriFire database creates floors and puts the addressable device graphic
icons in these floors. The description of those floors is "New Floor" and the labels of the floors are
sequenced from "AA", "AB", "AC" --- "AZ", "BA" etc. These labels then can be numbered and
located to match your campus layout.
Step 8. It may be necessary to relocate the VeriFire database addressable device icons created in
this procedure to their respective floor(s). Do so by performing the steps in “Relocating
VeriFire or RapidEye Devices to Their Building and Floor on a Campus” on page 55.
Step 5. In the left pane, click each camera to be imported and move it to the right pane by

NOTE: Importing a RapidEye database creates floors and puts the camera graphic icons in
these floors. The description of those floors is "New Floor" and the labels of the floors are
sequenced from "AA", "AB", "AC" --- "AZ", "BA" etc. These labels then can be numbered and
located to match your campus layout.
Step 7. It may be necessary to relocate the RapidEye database camera icons created in this
procedure to their respective floor(s). Do so by performing the steps in “Relocating
VeriFire or RapidEye Devices to Their Building and Floor on a Campus” on page 55.
NOTE: Multi-level objects cannot be relocated using the cut and paste method.
Step 1. Determine which addressable device graphic icon to cut from the current floor.
• From the main menu, select >View >Object Label to display addressable device graphic
icon labels.
• It might not be as easy to identify an addressable device graphic icon when the Object
Label is selected because of sizing. The Object Label setting is applied to all levels of
your building design.
• Right-click the name of the addressable device graphic icon in the Campus Layout tree.
The device icons handles appear along with a context menu.

Step 3. Right-click one of the selected objects to display the list of choices and select Cut Object
from the list. A colored border appears on the bottom and right side of the icon and
scissors appear adjacent to selected icons in the Campus Layout tree to denote that the
icon is prepared to be cut.
Step 4. Right-click the floor in the Campus Layout tree where you want to paste the objects and
select Paste Object from the list of choices. The pasted objects appear in the Campus
Layout tree and the Building Plan window.
