1. OBJECTIVES
To familiarize the student with :
1.1 about control circuit and main circuit for D.O.L Starter.
1.2 About the control equipment for electrical.

2. INTRODUCTION

Direct On Line Starter Method is a common method of starting of Cage

Induction Motor. The motor is connected through a starter across the full supply voltage. It
consists a coil operated contactor C controlled by start and stop push button. Different
starting methods are employed for starting induction motors because Induction Motor
draws more starting current during starting. To prevent damage to the windings due to the
high starting current flow, we employ different types of starters. The simplest form of motor
starter for the induction motor is the Direct On Line starter. The DOL starter consist a
MCCB or Circuit Breaker, Contactor and an overload relay for protection. Electromagnetic
contactor which can be opened by the thermal overload relay under fault conditions.
Typically, the contactor will be controlled by separate start and stop buttons, and an
auxiliary contact on the contactor is used, across the start button, as a hold in contact. I.e.
the contactor is electrically latched closed while the motor is operating.

3. PROCEDURE

1. Use a multimeter to check the continuity on the emergency stop button that have to
release to determine E1, E2, E3 and E4.
2. In the emergency stop button, E1 and E3 must be connected to yellow light button.
3. Then, in the overload, 95 must to connect to the 97 and then connected to the red light.
4. The wire was connected after the start button to the blue light button indicated.
5. After that, the live wire cable is connected to the E1 and R/1/L1 and then connected to
the live terminal. From the live terminal connected to the MCB 6A with the live
connection,
6. The neutral wire from the light yellow connected to the S/3/L2 and A2 to the neutral
terminal. Then, neutral terminal connected to the neutral terminal in the distribution
board.

5. RESULTS

When the power supply was connected to the Direct On Line (DOL), when the
push button start and the push stop button will functionality so that the DOL is
successfully be done. I turn on the power supply switch. Then, I pressed the open button
but nothing happened to the D.O.L. The wiring on the D.O.L was considered to be
inoperative due to an error in the wiring installed in the wrong place. Due to the wrong
wiring position, my D.O.L was not working properly. To troubleshoot the field control
circuit to the motor starter, check continuity across the device that supplies the start
signal to the motor starter, which could be a PLC contact closure, relay contact closure or
start/stop pushbutton circuit. After the control circuit problem has been located and
corrected, restore the incoming power and start the motor.

6. DISCUSSION

When the power source was connected, the push button start was pressed in
the DOL, the light turns on when the push button start was pressed but the color of the
light turned on was incorrect. This is due to wrong connection of the wires to the light.
The blue light must turn on when the push button start is pressed instead the yellow light
was turned on. When the emergency stop button and the push button stop was pressed no
light was turned on. This could be due to loose connections at the lights in the circuit that
causes the circuit to be incomplete and causes the lights not to turn on.

7. CONCLUSION

The wiring of a DOL and how it is controlled by the buttons such as emergency
stop button, push start button and push stop button is learnt. The DOL starter consist a
MCCB or Circuit Breaker, Contactor and an overload relay for protection.
Electromagnetic contactor which can be opened by the thermal overload relay under fault
conditions.Typically, the contactor will be controlled by separate start and stop buttons,
and an auxiliary contact on the contactor is used, across the start button, as a hold in
contact.
