Outcomes
General
1. Investigate and describe relationships between humans and their environments,
Learning
and identify related issues and scientific questions
Outcome(s)
Specific - Illustrate how life-supporting environments meet the needs of living things
Learning for nutrients, energy sources, moisture, suitable habitat, and exchange of
Outcome(s) gases.
Students will memorize the key terms related to ecosystems and the needs of
Learning
organisms
Objective(s)
Students will identify the basic needs of living things

Assessment
Summative Formative Discussion

Assessment Assessment Random Reporter

Lesson Procedures
 Word cards with the words
Tech Resources to
  Word cards with the definition
to Do Bring
 Worksheet of 4 basic needs
Time Content/Description Notes
Introduction
 Get the Students from class
 Ask the students if they remember what we did yesterday
and if they know any of the words we reviewed.
Discussion
 Ecosystem- interactions between living and non-
living things in an environment
 Ecology- the study of the relationships between
7 minutes living organisms and their environment
 Ecologist- someone who studies the relationships
between living organisms and their environment.
 Organisms- any type of living creature
 Habitat- The place you live
 See if they remember any. After getting their response go
through the terms and definitions one time.
 Tell them we are going to play the game from yesterday
for a few minutes.
 Game (random reporter)
 Have the students pass the cards around, reading the
word. When I say stop. They must all stop passing the
cards. Then I will read a definition or give an example
5 minutes
and whoever has the corresponding card has to hold
it up and say the word. That person then gets a point.
We will continue this for 4- 5 minutes.

Introduce the basic needs of living things.

 Ask the students if they know what the 4 basic needs of
all organisms are. Let them guess. If they are right, write
it on white board. If they are not explain why that is not a
need. Random reporter/ discussion
 Food
 Water
 Suitable Habitat
5 minutes  Exchange gases
 Have short discussion on this. Give examples of some
organisms and ask them to identify 4 of their specific
needs
 Tree
 Bear
 Cow

Worksheet
 Tell them that they will all get to choose an animal or
plant that they know of. If they struggle to come up with
one of these, I will give an animal to them.
 Horse
8 minutes
 Bird
 Cougar
 Mosquito
 Polar Bear
 Sheep
Closure
 Have each student share their paper with the class. Tell
5 minutes them the animal. The 4 basic needs for the survival of an
organism and their specific needs for their organism.
