PLENARY SESSION CHAPTER 5 & 6

1) Figure shows two new cast-iron pipes in series connect two reservoirs. The discharge water
from reservoir A to reservoir B is 0.5 m3/s. Find the elevation of the surface of reservoir B.
Sketch EGL & HGL.
(GROUP 5 & 10)

k = 0.5

2) (a) Express the velocity of a liquid leaving a nozzle depends upon the pressure drop and the
density.

(b) It is observed that the speed of a sound in a in a liquid depends upon the density ρ and
the bulk modulus K. Show that the relationship between (GROUP 6)

3) The pressure drop per unit length 'p' due to friction in a pipe depends upon the diameter 'D',
the mean velocity 'v', the density 'ρ' and the dynamic viscosity 'µ'. Find the relationship
between these variables using Buckingham method. (GROUP 2 & 7)

4) To study a transient process, a model is constructed at a 1:10 scale. Water is used in the
prototype, and it is known that viscous forces are the dominant ones. Compute the time,
velocity, and force ratios if the model uses oil that is five times more viscous than water,
with SG𝑜𝑖𝑙 = 0.8 by using Reynolds number law. (GROUP 1 & 11)

5) The force exerted on a bridge pier in a river is to be tested in a 1:10 scale model using water
as the working fluid. In the prototype the depth of water is 2.0 m, the velocity of flow is
1.5m/s and the width of the river is 20 m. Determine the depth, velocity and quantity of flow
in the model? (GROUP 4 & 8)

6) An open-channel model 30 m long is built to satisfy the Froude number law. What is the
flow in the model for a prototype flood of 700 m3/s if the scale used is 1:20? Also determine
the force ratio. (GROUP 3 & 9)
