ASSIGNMENT

Que- What is the s/d ratio for Button bit and Tricone rotary bit?

Ans- In s/d ratio of drilling bit ‘s’ stands for spacing between two cutting tool/buttons and
‘d’ stands for depth of cut by the drilling bit.

1. Button Bit:-
The depth of cut in drilling is equal to one half of the drill diameter. If ‘D’ is
the diameter of the drill, the depth of cut (d) d = D/2 mm.
If on the periphery of button bit let we have n number of buttons then, the
𝐷
spacing between the cutting tool/buttons (s) s = 𝜋 ∗ 𝑛
𝐷
Now s/d ratio for button bit =(𝜋 ∗ )/ (D/2)
𝑛
= 2* 𝜋/n

Now for button bit in the figure, it has 6 buttons on the

periphery and D = 51 mm;
So the value of ‘s’ for this bit = 26.70 mm,
Fig:-R32 Drilling underground button bit (Sandvik) Value of ‘d’ for this bit = 25.50 mm
Hence, s/d ratio for Button bit ≈ 1.05
2. Tricone rotary bit:-
The depth of cut in drilling is equal to one half of the drill diameter. If ‘D’ is
the diameter of the drill, the depth of cut (d) d = D/2 mm.
Tricone rotary bit has 3 cutting tool on the periphery then, the spacing
𝐷
between the cutting tool (s) s = 𝜋 ∗ 3
𝐷
Now s/d ratio for Tricone rotary bit = ( 𝜋 ∗ 3 ) / (D/2)
= 2*π/3

Now for the Tricone rotary bit in the figure, it has 3 cutting
tool on the periphery and D = 251 mm
So the value of ‘s’ for this bit = 262.85 mm,
Value of ‘d’ for this bit = 125.50 mm
Hence, s/d ratio for Tricone rotary bit ≈ 2.1
