CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Students engage in their schoolwork through strategies altered to their own capability and aptitude.
Acheaw (2004) defines study habits as well-planned and deliberate patterns of study which has attained a form
of consistency on the part of students towards understanding academic subjects and passing examinations. These
are practices used by students such as but not limited to rewriting notes, taking mock tests, or utilizing mnemonic
devices. Students receive multiple assignments every week that are granted a specific date and time for it to be
fulfilled; time is a big factor in a student’s life. It is ideal to allocate intervals in order to accomplish tasks and for
it to not clash with other events in life (e.g. leisure, family; Claessens et al., 2007). In some cases, several tasks
are simultaneously given that makes their schedules hectic as they complain about the lack of time provided to
accomplish tasks.

Time is limited, and it should be used much as possible. Cannon (1996) noted that the ones to adjust are
the individuals, on how they manage themselves and their resources in relation to time properly and effectively
in accordance to their schedules and availability. Time management is perceived as “self-management”, the skill
of making smart decisions about how to allocate your time in order to accomplish set goals. It is about working
smart and not just hard; strategically determining how you use your time in order to succeed (Kenedy, 2009).
Students apply their self-formed study habit, but might lack in terms of functionality and effectiveness when they
fail to be productive in accomplishing several tasks that results to a poor academic performance.

A problem also arises when the blame is shifted to the teachers, as students complain about the unequal
distribution of tasks. The researchers decided to look more into the situation and also discern whether or not this
is the case. Students may have failed to perform certain tasks due to academic procrastination, a tendency to put
off or delay tasks related to one’s studies so that they are not either not fully completed by their due dates or have
to be rushed to be finished (Soloman, 1994) or by improper time management and unbalanced allotment of time
that makes students incompetent.

Considering the various approaches of students to schoolwork, this research aims to discern the effect of
time management to the study habits of Junior High School Students of Pasig Catholic College. This study will
discourse the relevance and importance of time during the accomplishing of the students’ tasks and measure its
impact to improve one’s study habit.

Background of the Study

Schoolwork and assignments are no stranger to students from all generations. They are required to fulfill
tasks by a certain deadline, and if failed to comply, will result in a bad grade. Academic pressure isn’t no stranger
either – as a student should meet every subject’s requirements and expectations. With this, other aspects of a
student’s life other than academics may possibly be affected negatively as well – that can also take a toll on his/her
wellbeing. One instance could be that it could risk the student’s emotional and mental health, as the amount and
complexity of schoolwork overwhelms him/her. Students voiced their concern claiming that teachers distribute
the tasks unequally and unevenly – making it hard for them to comply to each one as they also need to discern
which subjects would they exert the most effort to. Assignments are given to challenge the students – to let them
hone their skills and develop proper work ethic as early as now so that they could have a foundation to build and
improve as they grow up.

As our generation is continuously evolving, students tend to focus on other things rather than academics
– which is totally understandable, as he/she also has other matters to attend to. But, when students complain about
the amount of workload they get and blame it on the education system, it could possibly be the result of lack of
discipline of the student when faced with schoolwork.

Time plays a big factor in a student’s life. Knowing how to properly manage time in doing schoolwork
will also have a “domino effect” on the other aspects of a student’s life. Every student has a basic study habit that
they normally apply in completing tasks. They envision themselves as successful in their studies but fail to put
together a realistic plan or establish a routine that will enable them to achieve academic success.

However, even if students made an exceptional plan for their time allotment, they still have to face the
problem of its proper execution, and backup plans to ensure that they still follow their plan without straying from
what they plan to do.

To assist students in improving their time management ability, we must know the common mistakes and
hindrances that should be avoided by students in order for them to find the key to success not only academically
but also in their life as a whole.
While students are equipped with their self-honed study habits, lack of academic competency is evident
in Junior High School students of Pasig Catholic College. With this research, we are to emphasize the aftereffects
and the impact of incorporating time management to a student's study regime.

Statement of the Problem

This research investigation will analyze how time management affects the study habits of students. At the end
of this study, the researchers seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the common study habits performed by the students?

2. How much time does a student allot in accomplishing tasks?

3. How important is time in a student’s study habit?

4. In what way does time management improve one’s study habit?

Significance of the Study

This study aims to discourse the relevance and impact of time management among the study habits of
students in accomplishing academic requirements given by teachers/professionals.

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following demographics:

Students. With this research, the Junior High School students will realize the effect/impact of proper time
management in improving their study habits in order to achieve long term effects such as better performance in
academics and achieve a healthier, less stressful lifestyle. In addition, students will hone their critical thinking
and strategies on how they would react and function when given a challenging task.

Teachers/Professionals. The results of this study will influence the mindset of professionals, in terms of
handling, preparing, and assigning various activities to Junior High School students. Additionally, it is for them
to challenge the students on how they will act upon receiving tasks and develop good attitude towards work.

School. The data of the incurred study will improve the school’s propositions or development in terms of handling
and implementing academic rules and regulations. This study will foster new ways of enhancing academic
approach, revised conditions regarding students’ academic requirements, and advancement of school
management, thus preparing responsible and high-achiever individuals.
Parents. This study will be beneficial to parents in terms of awareness regarding a child's daily tasks and
understands the responsibilities of school works. Whereas, the parents will take part in guiding and influencing a
child in responsibly handling and balancing time for various requirements.

Scope and Delimitation

This research aims to disclose how time management directly affects the study habits of Junior High
School Students.

The researchers will conduct a survey containing ten (10) questions concerning the relevance of time to
one’s study habits and the student’s attitude towards work as they do so. In addition, the questions will consist of
how students utilize their limited time to accomplish assignments and also note their behavioral patterns or habits
before, after and during the fulfillment of these tasks.

The respondents of the survey will be 20 students from different sections in each grade level (Grade 7 –
Grade 10) for the School Year 2019 – 2020. This survey will be made available to a limited number of students
and will be utilized for the analyzation of data.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally:

Study Habits – behavior of the student when preparing for tests or learning academic material.

Time – it is the amount of attention a student is allotting on a specific activity.

Time Management – ability to use one's time effectively or productively in accomplishing academic tasks.

Academic Procrastination - tendency of the student to delay a study habit, especially out of habitual carelessness
or laziness.

Academic Competency – skills, attitudes, and behaviors of the students that can help them to earn academic
success in the future.

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework

The framework represents the impact of time management with the aid of numerous extraneous variables
affecting the study habits of a student. These external factors are one which the student cannot control but impact
them in a way that it changes their routine causing them to devise new plans which were originally not part in
their management of time in their academic tasks. But with such factors, the study habits of the student will show
significant results as they will have improved quality of works in their tasks, along with a better overall academic
performance.
