In this era technology always develop time by time which is giving impact
to our daily life. Almost all people from all ages require technology as their basic
needs and also there are many aspects such as economic, social, culture and
education that are improve because the power of technology. Today, technology
plays an important role in our existence (Ottenbreit-Leftwich et al. 2010).
Anything with technology looks so easy and less wasting time. Therefore, we as
teachers should have to think more carefully about technology when try to involve
it during teaching the students. One of the influences from technology is education
(Li, Sun, and Jee 2019), likely media technology is a tool to assist students in the
learning process (Li et al. 2019). For instance, in education the inventions of
paper, printer, radio, film, TV, and computer have been utilized, in order to make
the learning process become effective. Effective teaching is important because
teaching is sharing knowledge and experience to students. Effectiveness does not
mean to be perfect or to give outstanding performance, but to produce the best in
students.
As we know that in this modern era there are many students or teenagers
using technology as smartphone and laptop, they seems more expert about
technology rather than old person because they spend time to electronics from the
very beginning , so by integrating technology in classes students might be interest
because they know-well about it and they may feel curious what kind of learning
process that would they get by combining education and media technology . Not
only that by integrating technology whilst learning process it also might expand
their ability(Samra 2013). In my experience when I was in junior high school, my
teachers adjust multimedia such as LCD projector and recorder to support their
material and I was distracted to what my teacher showed and began to pay
attention on what my teachers said. It is very different when the teachers teaching
with no additional tools. That kind of way is quite boring because the teachers only
ask students to read and answer on worksheet. Therefore, to increase students
interest in learning English the teachers may use LCD and display a text, picture or
even video(Sitompul and Sihombing 2018). Since junior students seem to like
seeing new things in front of them and they are be able to concentrate to the
lesson, so they are having enough brave to speak in class.
That is why, the aim of this paper is to make the teachers consider on
applying multimedia during classes since the impact of multimedia technology
itself is quite high to help students to increase their abilities such as dare to speak
up in front of class, depth understanding about the material, and enjoy the lesson.
The teachers have many options of style to teach and don’t forget that sometimes
each student doesn’t have same skills to adapt in learning material, so it is
teachers’ job to solve it by combining the way he/she teaching in classroom. In this
paper, we will know how the students’ responses towards multimedia in learning
process. The students are getting confuse or easily to adapt with the multimedia
technology. Also, what kind of multimedia that may improve students speaking
skill. Lastly, the implementation of modern learning whilst teaching.
Students Responses
Learning is the way of teachers to teach and give their knowledge to their
students, so they can learn according to what they need and interests. Learning has
a very dominant role to realize the quality of both the process and the output of
education. Learning also has an influence that causes the quality of education to be
low. This means that learning is very dependent on the ability of teachers to
implement the learning process. Learning that is carried out properly and
appropriately will make a high contribution to students meanwhile, learning
process that is done in a bad way will cause the difficulty of students to develop
their skills. Traditional learning is emphasizing the importance of mastering the
whole learning material. Traditional learning systems have the characteristic that
learning management is determined by the teachers. The role of the students is
only to do activities according to the teachers’ instructions. The bad side of this
method is the teachers tends to convey the material, the problem of understanding
or quality of students’ acceptance toward the material does not get serious
attention. Meanwhile, modern learning is the result of combine the development of
technology and information that change the conception and way of thinking of
human learning. In modern learning teachers shows many additional tools in order
to make students pay attention to them. Not only that, there are some tools such as
recorder or film that build students courage, so they are brave enough to speak in
class.
Multimedia offers great potential as a powerful learning technology like
picture, video and audio to enhance students learning. Fortunately, students
nowadays are similar with technology because in this era everything depend on
technology, so the response of the students toward the teachers that applying
multimedia in class is quite acceptable. It will trigger the curiosity of students
when they are taught in situation they never feel. Actually, they seem to feel relax
because they are be able to express their ideas freely. The reason why it is better to
apply multimedia technology because compare to the traditional learning methods
that only teachers as the center of the class will cause boredom among students. By
using multimedia technology, it will trigger students’ curiosity and it’s not only just
to involve students, but also give new strategies helps students to achieve a better
understanding in a class.
In the end, by including multimedia technology the teachers may would get
students attention and feel want to know more about it (Zin et al. 2013). After the
students get used by the multimedia technology that they are always see, listen, and
understand. Then, the students’ courage comes slowly and they begin to imitate the
dialogue and try to speak up with their friends during the class, but don’t forget that the
teachers role in learning process is not about transfer the knowledge, but as a facilitator
who provides stimulus in the form of learning strategies, guidance and assistance when
the students having trouble or provide learning media and materials so the students may
feel motivated and interested in learning process. Lastly, the students have success to
adapt with the teaching by integrating multimedia.
Multimedia Application
1. Learning center
At first the teachers as the center of the class, but in modern learning it
changes to student centered. In this case, the students have a chance to be
creative and develop the potential of students through the activities from
what they interest and want. It’s not means that teachers become passive
and do nothing.
2. Learning source
Learning source is anything that give information, explanation, definition,
theory, concept and explanation related to the learning process. Multimedia
is consisting of some media that become one to achieve the learning
objective. From the developing of media electronic like laptop and LCD
projector it can clarify and help the teachers to deliver the material more
detail. Although, in the world of education they need to match with the
develop of technology. It showed by the emergence of internet technology
namely educational activities or learning through electronic media such as
Computer Based Learning and Electronic Based Learning.
A. Computer-Based Learning
In this learning, we use computers as a tool to help students, so they can
interact and deal with computers individually so that the experience
experienced by students will be different from what experienced by
other students.
B. Electronic Based Learning
Electronic based learning or we know as e-learning is an innovative
learning model that uses information technology such as LAN, WAN, and
Internet to convey the materials.
3. Type of work
In traditional learning used isolated work. It means that in the learning
process the students’ study individually and they depend on their selves, so
they often don’t interact with other students. Meanwhile, in modern
learning giving priority to do teamwork. There is some model of
cooperative learning which the teachers can implement in learning process.
4. Evaluation
There are some different in the application of learning evaluation between
traditional and modern learning. Evaluation of learning in traditional view
is more directed at learning objectives. Assessment of student learning
outcomes or knowledge is seen as part of learning and is usually done by
means of tests. Therefore, in traditional learning the emphasis on students
is often only on the completion of the task. Whereas in modern learning, the
measurement process and student learning outcomes are intertwined in the
unity of learning activities, by means of the teacher observing the things
that are being done by students, as well as through work assignments.
5. In traditional learning, one of the characteristics is information delivery
from other side only that is teacher. Teacher deliver the material to
students and students receive it, so only the teachers who are active and
students being passive. On the other side, modern learning is about
information exchange. It is very different because when the teachers
teaching the students, the students may give suggestion, critic, even new
information related to the material.
