Solving Systems of Equations

Standards (include NCTE/NCSS/NGSS/NCTM/ACTFL):

CC.9-12.A.REI.6: Solve systems of equations. Solve systems of linear equations exactly

and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.

Educational Objectives:
• The students will be able to solve systems of equations.
• The students will be able to understand the academic language for this section.

Assessment on Learning:

• The students will be informally assessed using a task sheet that will be provided.

Central Focus

• The students will learn about solving system of equations.

Academic Language
Language Function (select 1):

Analyze Compare/Contrast Construct Describe Evaluate

Examine Identify Interpret Justify Locate

Explain Prove Argue Synthesize

Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to practice using
the language function identified above:
The students will be able to identify the system of linear expression that will be given to them.
Then, the students will have to identify which method is the most appropriate and effective
method to evaluate the problem. Once they have done this, they have to identify the values for
each variable.

Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified above,
describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to understand
and/or use:
Vocabulary:
• Variable: a symbol for an unknown number
• Equation: a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal
• System of equations: a collection of two or more equations with the same set of unknows
Plus at least one of the following:
Syntax-
• Equal sign (=) is defined as two things being the same or holding the same value.
Materials:
• Textbook
• Task Sheet
• White board markers
• White board erasers
• Teacher’s notes
• Pencils

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

• The attention getter for this lesson will be that students will have to solve an application
problem in partners. This problem will require students to analyze the problem first.
Then, students will have to solve the system of equations that result from the application
problem with the assistance of their partners. I will observe the manner in which they
solved it.

• “Good morning, class! How was everyone’s weekend? Today we will be learning how to
solve systems of equations. First, we will work on an activity with a partner. I will write
the problem, and you and your partner have ten minutes to solve it.”
Questions to Ask
1. Comprehension: What is the difference between an equation and systems of equations?
2. Analysis: In which cases is one method more effective than the other?
3. Knowledge: What do we already know about equations?
4. Comprehension: How can we verify that our answer is correct?
5. Application: How can we apply this knowledge to systems of equations with more than two
variables?

Sequence of Events (include time needed):

1. Anticipatory Set (10 minutes)
a. The lesson will begin by conducting a small group activity. The application
problem for this activity will be provided by the teacher. This activity will allow
students to discover the manner to solve systems of equations. This will allow
students motivated to learn solving systems of equations.
2. Lesson on Solving System of Equations (15 minutes)
a. Once we have completed the anticipatory set, I will move on to teach the lesson
on solving systems of equations. During this time, I will be introducing the
academic language of the lesson. I will then proceed to evaluate various problems
while I verbally mention my approach to solving these problems. It will be very
important for students to understand the manner in which to solve these types of
problems since they will have to apply this knowledge to future courses as well.
While I am writing down the solutions in my lesson, I will be asking questions to
promote student thinking.
3. Task Sheet on Solving System of Equations (20 minutes)
a. Students will be given a task sheet that will assess students’ understanding of the
material. This will also allow me to analyze the effectiveness of my teaching.
Also, this will give me the opportunity to observe if I should review today’s
material on the following day of class.
4. Conclusion (5 minutes)

Conclusion/Summary:
• To summarize this lesson, we will review the three methods to solving a system of
equations.
• “Before we leave today, let us summarize what we learned today. What are the different
methods in solving a system of equation? How can we identify which method is most
effective? Great job today everyone. Next week we will learn how to multiply powers
with the same base.”
