selfless dedication of society’s veterans, teaching and non – teaching faculties,
parents and well wishes alike.

Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL)

Today, we live in the ‘Digital / Information Age’, the age that has brought with it
innumerable benefits – robot-assisted surgery, automated factories and houses, internet
banking, online courses and degree programs, to name a few.

Government of India’s policy think tank, NITI Aayog has established ‘Atal Tinkering
Labs’ (ATL) under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) with the objective to endorse STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning to students and convert them into
agile minds of the future by cultivating curiosity, creativity, and imagination in the young
India.

The objective of ATL lab is to promote culture of innovation and entrepreneurship

amongst India’s youngsters.

Major challenges faced by India in 21st century are lack of modern practices in
agriculture, poor water management, climate change, affordable housing, quality
education, health-care and 24x7 power supply.
India needs innovation in Agriculture today…
 With net sown area over 140 million hectares, agriculture with its allied sector is the
largest livelihood provider in India
 Agriculture is the only sector where demand will only keep on increasing and
supply will always be volatile due to structural factors and monsoon dependency.
 As per UN report, a quarter of the world’s hunger and undernourished people live
in India (195 million)
 Indian agriculture is plagued by several problems like lack of modernization,
inefficient water management, low yield per hectare, soil erosion, poor access to
marketing channels, insufficient storage facilities, etc.

Leveraging on state of the art Atal Tinkering Lab, our institution, VEMS has taken a step
further to create awareness regarding innovations in agricultural field to farmers,
Corporates and general public with novel Agri-based products and solutions. Students
from different schools, colleges and general public are invited to present their innovative
projects in the field of agriculture.

ANVESHANA 2019
Agriculture is now a sector with great growth potential. This is evident with increase in
number of Agri-Tech startups in recent years. India has set an ambitious target of
doubling farm income by 2022. With an agenda to transform agricultural sector, VEMS
is conducting first-ever Agri-Fest, “ANVESHANA” to support Innovators of tomorrow.

ANVESHANA-2019 is a State level Agri-Tinkering Fest that provides a platform for

creative minds to exhibit their innovations in the field of Agriculture through scaled down
models / projects. Participants will get to interact with farmers, Industries, Government
policy makers, media & other stakeholders. Innovators will get an opportunity to hone
their entrepreneurial skills by scaling up / commercializing their ideas.

N0TE:-Winners of this Fest will be recognized and awarded by Big Corporates and
Gov’t Institutions. Practically usable ideas/products will be scaled up for commercial
production after launching it by the same student / participant in the same place and
date next year.
ANVESHANA Divisions for participants:
➢ Sub Junior: 13 Years and below/ up to 8th
➢ Junior: 14 to 18 years / 9th to 2nd P.U.C.
➢ Senior: Graduation and Technical studies / ITI, Professional colleges etc.
➢ Farmer / general public.

ANVESHANA Categories:
Participants can compete in ANVESHANA in one of the five categories:
1. Emerging Technologies in Agriculture
2. Innovative Agricultural Tools
3. Soil and Water Management
4. Use of Animal husbandry in Agriculture
5. Innovative Agricultural by-products with special emphasis on
Arecanut and its alternative uses

Category description:

1. Emerging Technologies in Agriculture: Despite large cultivable land area,

India lags behind many other countries as far as agricultural productivity is
concerned. Over 40% of food products are wasted and destroyed due to inadequate
storage facilities which result in increased prices. Need of the hour is to incorporate
latest developments in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science,
Biotechnology, Biomimetics, Mobile app technology to increase agricultural
productivity, improve food quality, reduce private hoarders /middlemen, etc.

Examples:
1) Genetically Modified (GM) Crops to obtain ultra-high yield; ecofriendly fertilizers,
new organic methods to control crop pests, seed preservation techniques, etc.
2) Application of Internet of Things (IOT) to simplify farm management
3) Photosynthesis using LED grow lights to increase productivity after sunset and for
indoor cultivation / vertical farming;
4) Growing with Hydroponics/Aeroponics when soil is poor or in severe climate.
5) Integrated (Biomass / Solar powered) and sustainable Cold Storage set-up.
2. Innovative Agricultural Tools: To find smarter ways of farming and minimizing
labour dependency through Robotics, UGVs / UAVs, etc.
Examples:
1) Robots for land ploughing, seed sowing and crop harvesting
2) Planting trees and material propagation through Drones
3) Autonomous vehicle to identify and remove weeds, pests
4) A simple-viable method to instantly check if food is organically cultivated
3. Soil and Water Management: Fresh water is a scarce resource and agriculture
accounts to 90% of groundwater utilization. With growing water crisis in our country,
we need novel methods not only to optimize water consumption but also to prevent
soil erosion as India loses around 5 billion tons of fertile soil annually.
Examples:
1) Soil Testing ; Crop identification based on Soil type and Climate-Rainfall
conditions
2) Precision irrigation systems: Smart way to collect and utilize condensed dew
drops from nature, Air-Condition ducts, etc.
4. Use of Animal husbandry in Agriculture: Animal husbandry provides
livelihood to millions of farmers. We look forward to adaptation of innovative
methods in this field.
Examples:
1) Smart feeding technologies
2) Cattle pregnancy detector by examining urine samples, using ultrasound, etc.
3) Smart device to identify milk (A1 / A2) and examine health condition of Cow
4) Novel mechanism to lift fallen or dead livestock like cattle
5) Creative solution to protect agricultural lands from wild animals

5. Innovative Agricultural by-products with special emphasis on

Arecanut and its alternative uses: To find creative utility of agricultural by-
products especially exploring commercial application of Areca husk, leaf sheath…
Examples:
1) Arecanut finds use in medicine, ecofriendly plates, hardboards, chocolates, tea, etc.
2) Novel use of rice husk, sugarcane bagasse and molasses.

NOTE: Select a topic of interest from any of the above following themes for your project.
A school/College can submit one project in one category from one division. Students
should inform the head of the institute before applying. For Farmers/General Public: An
individual/team can submit and exhibit in one category only.
