ACTIVITY NO.1 OSMOSIS

INTRODUCTION

Osmosis is a focus in which water process across the cell membrane depending
on the solute concentration inside and outside the cell, according to the study of
Williams et al (1999). Many factors affect the rate of osmosis including size of particle
and temperature however the factor investigated today is concentraation o sucrose, as
the concentration of sucrose increase the difference in mass of potato will increase that
it has a higher amount of particles dissolved in the solution, while a hypotonic solution
such as water where there is fewer particles dissolved.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The materials used in experiment are the salt, water, knife, petri dish and potato
The following procedure was utilized for this experiment are; the potato was cut into
half then it was placed the cut end facing downwards in a petri-dish of water, the
hollow in top of potato was being scooped out and was filled with salt. For the
observation, the potato was left in laboratory for 24 hours and any changes during
observation was accurately recorded.
RESULT

Before After

The salt at the top of potato based upon the observation

was steal there and there is no changes the potato was became
happen. Darker in the part where the salt
place on top of the potato was
already melted.

DISCUSSION

Water molecules moved from where they are highly concentrated in the petri
plate to the region where they have a lower concentration in the hollow in potato
through a semi permeable membrane. This explains the rise of water in the hallow of
potato. the potato cells act as a semi-permeable membrane whereby they selectively
allow the entry of water from the Petri plate to the solution in the potato.

Therefore, the concept of osmosis is clearly demonstrated by this experiment

water molecules are observed to have moved from the region where they are highly
concentrated to the region where they have a low concentration through a semi-
permeable membrane in the cells of the potato. From the experiment, it can be deduced
that in order for osmosis to take place there must be a semi-permeable membrane that
separates two regions that have different concentration of solvent molecules.
