Insufficient Clean Potable Water Threatens the Health and Development

of the People in Kibawe

Introduction:
Globally, an estimated 633 million people lack access to safe water sources.
Diarrhoeal disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in
developing countries, especially among children under the age of five (Kosak et al.,
2003; Prüss et al., 2002). In the developed world, too, it would appear from estimates
of the Global Burden of Disease that complacency should be avoided, with 139,000
Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) attributed to water, sanitation and hygiene in
established market economies (Prüss et al., 2002).
A child’s well-being is highly dependent on both the quality and the availability
of water, and on how well this precious resource is managed. Around the world, both
biological disease agents and chemical pollutants are compromising drinking-water
quality. Contaminated water causes a range of diseases which are often life-
threatening. Of the waterborne diseases affecting children, the most deadly are
diarrhoeal infections. Childhood diarrhoea is closely associated with insufficient water
supply, inadequate sanitation, water contaminated with communicable disease
agents, and poor hygiene practices.
The public health importance of diarrhoea among children lies partly in the high
mortality rates as well as in the interactions between malnutrition, recurrent diarrhoea
and impaired child development. Contrary to breastfed infants, bottle-fed infants are
highly exposed to the effects of unsafe drinking-water. It cannot be overemphasized
that the transmission routes for infectious agents are complex and thus contribute to
the complexity of prevention. Interventions in water supply, sanitation and hygiene
are estimated to reduce diarrhoeal incidence, on average, by a quarter (25%) and
child mortality by 65%. However, selected interventions have been shown to be much
more efficient in certain settings.
This is the core of this study, to determine the status of the insufficiency of
portable water in the area of Kibawe, determine how this state affects the health and
development of the people and how this problem can be addressed. Access to clean
water and adequate sanitation has been a challenging issue in Kibawe Bukidnon. Due
to the unavailability of clean water sources and poor sanitation most of the inhabitants
of are threaten with the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera and this has
led to the degenerating situation of Kibawe.
Learning Objectives:

The aim of this study is to provide access to adequate potable water supply and a
better sanitation through the use of research and advocacy.
The objectives are:
1) To identify the pattern of access to public water supply and sanitation in Kibawe;
2) To create a database of the existing water source and their yield;
3) To identify the health problems related to water and sanitation in Kibawe; and
4) To design a water and sanitation blue print for the study area.

Research Output and Product:

This research study will determine the status of the insufficiency of portable
water in the area of Kibawe and how this problem causes prevalent diarrhea cases
especially to children five years old and below.
This research aims at providing access to adequate portable water supply and
a better sanitation through the use of research and advocacy. This is achieved by
identifying the pattern of access to public water supply and sanitation in Kibawe and
the creation of a database of the existing water source and their yield was determined
to enhance planning.
At the end of the research water and sanitation blue print for the study area
will be designed and a proposal will be sent to relevant government agencies and
ministries for the provision of more sources of potable water in the community. In this
regard, Public Private Dialogue (PPD) will be initiated and adequate follow up process
will be made until the aim of the research will be achieved.
