SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions and recommendation of this study which
describes the profile and the effects of body shaming and complimenting towards the level of self-
esteem of Notre Dame of Dadiangas college students.

Summary of the findings

The overriding purpose of this study was to determine the effects of body shaming and
complimenting towards the self-esteem of NDDU college students.

The results revealed that most of our respondents were ages between 21 and 22 years old with the
frequency total of 86 (71%). The remaining respondents were ages 20 and 23 years old with the
frequency total of 34 (28%). While there was none on the age bracket of 24 years old and above. 97% of
the total population were females while 3% were males.

The level of self-esteem of CAS, COE, BC students before body shaming were high, however, after
being body shamed, it did not have any significant effects to their level of self-esteem. While CEAT
students’ whole self-esteem was also high, cascaded to low self-esteem after being body shamed. This
means that most of NDDU students were confident with their body image and only the student’s from
CEAT was affected by the body shaming.

The level of self-esteem of COE, BC and CEAT students before complimenting were low. After
receiving compliments, their level of self-esteem increased. Whereas, CAS students’ level of self-esteem
from low remain unchanged after being praised. It was observed that some students who have poor self-
confidence were not comfortable receiving praises.

Conclusions:

Based on the results of the study, the researchers have drawn the following conclusions:

Body shaming has no significant effects towards the level of self-esteem of NDDU College students.
Therefore, H1 is rejected.

Most research recommends that a person's cooperation in sports, games and some sort physical
exercises. Students who participate in school events in tend to exhibit lower levels of stress and higher
self-esteem than those who do not take part in it (Parisi, 2011).
Physical activity promotes “mental, social and physical development” and “reduces depression, anxiety
and responses to stress, and improves mood, relaxation, self-esteem, social contacts and social support
(McCabe, Ricciardelli & Salmon, 2006)

Complimenting has a significant effect towards the level of self-esteem of NDDU College students.
Therefore, H2 is accepted.

The language of compliments may change among people, yet being acknowledged commonly expands
constructive influence. In the review I led, over 93% concurred that giving and getting gratefulness
through any language "makes them feel better," and over 32% of the respondents admitted that they as
it were give a compliment to "make the other individual feel better." Praise and gratefulness additionally
might be compelling basically in light of the fact that it makes a positive state of mind (Delin and
Baumeister, 1994) or in light of the fact that it increases individual’s self-esteem (Blumenfeld, Pintrich,
Meece, and Wessles, 1982)

Recommendations:

Based on the findings and conclusions presented, the researchers recommended:

That the number of respondents should be increased in order to come up with a more reliable data.

That the verbal body shaming and complimenting among the respondents should be greater to meet the
expected hypothesis.

That the institutions will provide seminars for students such as how to develop self-esteem, how to
accept compliments and manage body shaming and the importance of body image.

That the schools will provide “development programs” for the self-esteem of the students.

The other researchers who will conduct related studies about the effects of body shaming and
complimenting towards the students should consider other factors aside from verbal body shaming and
complimenting.

That the parents should also join seminars about the importance of body image to help them have
awareness on their childs body image that may affect their self esteem.

That the society should be united to stop body shaming, by avoiding posting comments on social media
about body shaming.
