LANGUAGE AND ARTS DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF JEMBER 2019 CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD
This chapter discusses the research method in this study. It covers
discussion about research design, subject of the study, data and data source, data collecting technique and instrument, technique of data verification, and data analysis.
3.1 The Research Design
Based on the research objectives, in line with the use of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in teaching writing at Senior High School. This research was conducted based on the principle of experimental research. According to Sugiyono (2006:80), experimental research is a research which has the purpose to find the cause-effect relationship among variables in a controlled condition. The essential feature of experimental research is that investigators deliberately control and manipulate the conditions which determine the events, in which they are interested, introduce an intervention and measure the difference that it makes. This study classified in to experimental research that use one group pre test and post test design. In the one group pre-test and post-test design, a single group is measured or observed not only after being exposed to a treatment of some sort, but also before it by applying pre-test. A pre-test provides a measure on some attribute or characteristic that the researcherasses for participants in an experiment before the group receive a treatment, while a post-test measure on some attribute or characteristic that is assessed for participants in an experiment after a treatment (Creswell, 2008:301). The teacher as the researcher should make inference from reflection of the teaching writing to identify the difficulty of writing context in the meeting. Therefore, the ongoing improvement of teaching writing will be achieved and then the students ‘writing comprehension also can be improved.
3.2 The Research Procedure
The procedures of pre-experimental research that use one-group pre-test and post- test design in this study are described as follows:
Administering a pre- Administering a pre-
test (Y1) test (Y1)
Applying the experimental
treatment (X) 1. Administering a pre-test (Y1) with a purpose of measuring writing ability of first grade students at SMAN 2 Jember before applying treatment. 2. Applying the experimental treatment (X) teaching writing ability by using alphabet soup game to the first grade students at SMAN 2 Jember. 3. Administering a post-test (Y2) with a purpose of measuring writing ability of first grade students at SMAN 2 Jember after applying treatment.
In this research, the researcher use experimental research with quantitative
approach. The researcher wants to know the effectiveness of using PBL towards writing ability of the first grade.
3.3 The Research Context
The researcher will conduct the research at SMAN 2 Jember, because there is problem with the student's writing comprehension. The research will use Problem Based Learning (PBL) to improve their writing comprehension.
3.4 The Research Participant
In this research, the researcher collaborated with the tenth grade students and English teacher of SMAN 2 Jember in order to get objective data about the development of the tenth grade students writing comprehension. The researcher and the teacher taught the students by using Problem Based Learning (PBL). Both of teacher and researcher became the observers in the class. Hence, the researcher also gave suggestion to the teacher about the method, instructional information, teaching material, and learning assessment applied in the seventh grade of SMAN 2 Jember.
