A. Topic: Prostitution

B. General Purpose: To persuade my audience

C. Specific Purpose: My speech will encourage the audience to want to make

prostitution legal in the United States

Introduction:

I. Attention Getter: Do you want to make $3000 per week? That puts you at making

six figures a year plus some. Does that not sound awesome? Well according to

nypost.com 2016, prostitutes can earn up to $3000 dollars per week maybe even

higher depending on how good they are. However, we do not have this opportunity

to make all this cash because prostitution is not legal in the United States (except in

Nevada).

II. Thesis Statement: Prostitution should be legalized in the United States

III. Preview: In the next few minutes I will discuss the problems that we have with

prostitution (sex trafficking, workers feeling unsafe, and untaxed dollars), how

making it legal could reduce these problems, and how you can make this happen.

Body:

I. Problems

A. One main problem that we are faced with today with prostitution is sex

trafficking. People say that legalizing prostitution increases sex trafficking,

however, that is not true. According to Abigail R. Hall-Blannco, PhD in 2017,

“Criminalizing prostitution makes sex trafficking more likely.” In the same

post it talks about New Zealand. It states, “After legalizing prostitution in

 2003, New Zealand found no incidence of human trafficking.” This makes a

lot of sense. Making prostitution legal decreases its demand for sex

trafficking. Often sex trafficking causes people to make a lot of money doing it

because it is not allowed. Legalizing it makes it so they do not have this

economic drive for it anymore.

B. When it comes to legalizing prostitution, people often argue that it puts the

sex workers in danger. This is not always true. According to theweek.co.uk

2016, “decriminalization will actually make sex workers safer.” It makes

them safer by getting rid of the pimps and the trafficking gangs who sell

them. Another way it makes them safe according to debatingeurope.eu 2016,

“prostitutes will feel safer going to the police if they no longer fear

prosecution.” Since prostitution is illegal here, people are often scared to

report instances of physical abuse because they are scared of getting in

trouble.

C. Another problem we face with prostitution is all the untaxed revenue it

brings in. Prostitution brings in about $186 billion dollars per year according

to havocscope.com 2018. This is a lot of money that this business brings in. In

the United States, since it is illegal, it is not taxed, and we are not profiting

from it.

Transition: Now that we have talked about all the problems that come with

illegal prostitution, I am going to discuss some ways we can eliminate these

problems.

II. Solution
 A. We need to legalize prostitution in order to reduce sex trafficking.

B. Legalizing prostitution will make it so these people who are involved feel like

they can go to the cops if something more serious is happening to them.

C. By legalizing prostitution and taxing it, our government and country could make

more money to help get us out of debt.

III. Call to Action

A. I feel like prostitution can be very beneficial not only to the people who are

providing these endeavors, but to our country as well. I have made a petition on

change.org that we make prostitution legal. I would like you guys to sign my

petition and help make our societies safer, better, and help people make lots of

money.

Conclusion:

I. Illegal prostitution comes with a lot of problems. These problems include

increased sex trafficking, people feeling unsafe, as well as untaxed revenue. All

these things could be resolved if we legalize prostitution. By signing my petition,

you could play a part in making that happen. I know prostitution is not for

everyone. However, it could be for everyone if you could make $3000 dollars a

week and six figures a year.
