1. Chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances, the reactants,
are converted to one or more different substances, the products.
2. A chemical reaction rearranges the constituent atoms of the reactants to create
different substances as products.
3. Burning fuels, smelting iron, making glass and pottery, brewing beer, and
making wine and cheese are among many examples of activities
incorporating chemical reactions.
4. Physical changes include changes of state, such as ice melting to water and
water evaporating to vapour. If a physical change occurs, the physical
properties of a substance will change, but its chemical identity will remain the
same.
5. Chemical reaction, a process in which one or more substances, the reactants,
are converted to one or more different substances, the products. Substances
are either chemical elements or compounds. Chemical reactions abound in
the geology of Earth, in the atmosphere and oceans, and in a vast array of
complicated processes that occur in all living systems. Chemical reactions
must be distinguished from physical changes. Burning fuels, smelting iron,
making glass and pottery, brewing beer, and making wine and cheese are
among many examples of activities incorporating chemical reactions that
have been known and used for thousands of years.

Junk food: "Junk food" generally refers to foods that contribute lots of calories but
little nutritional value. Of course, what's considered "junk food" depends on whom
you ask. Some might say pizza is junk food, for example. But I personally don't think
so, since it contributes real food with nutrients, like cheese and tomato sauce. Add
whole-wheat or part whole-wheat crust, plus veggies as a topping, and I'd say pizza
completely exits the junk food category.
Vegetables are parts of plants that are consumed by humans as food as part of a
meal. Originally, the term was applied to plants collectively and is still commonly
used, especially in biology, to refer to all plant matter, including
the flowers, fruits, stems, leaves, roots, and seeds.
Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the
resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Most
commonly the substance is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant which have been
rolled into a small square of rice paper to create a small, round cylinder called a
"cigarette".
Drugs are dangerous, which is why prescription and over the counter drugs have
careful instructions about how to take them. If you misuse drugs you could risk
damaging your health, and possibly die if you take too much (overdose). People
don’t think they will get addicted when they start taking drugs, but many drugs
contain substances that can lead to addiction.
Drinking Water: We all need to drink water. The amount of drinking water
required varies. It depends on physical activity, age, health issues, and
environmental conditions.

Activity 2
Physical Check-up
A : Good morning, how are you doing today?
B : I have been feeling pretty good, Dr. Smith.
A : So, I can see by your chart that you are here for your annual physical.
B : Yes, I am playing on the tennis team this year, and they are requiring
me to get a physical exam.
A : We are basically going to check your heart, lungs, blood sugar levels,
and eyes, ears, and nose.
B : I've kind of been having problems being out of breath. Can you look at
that?
A : Yes, I will check you for asthma, and maybe we can check you for
allergies later.
B : Thank you. What will the blood test tell you?
A : We will be checking for blood sugar, cholesterol, and white blood cell
count.
B : I have been working hard to stay healthy. I hope the tests turn out well.

Activity 3
Chemicals in Food
Chemicals in food are largely harmless and often desirable – for example,
nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, fat and fibre are composed of chemical
compounds. Chemicals can, however, have a variety of toxicological properties,
some of which might cause effects in humans and animals. Usually, these are not
harmful unless we are exposed to them for a long time and at high levels.
Chemical substances can play an important role in food production and
preservation. Food additives can, for example, prolong the shelf life of foods;
others, such as colours, can make food more attractive. Flavourings are used to
make food tastier. Food supplements are used as sources of nutrition.

Activity 1
1. Antioxidants work at scouring away these free radicals and therebly leading
to improve health.
2. The main sources of antioxidants are tomatoes, broccoli, phytonutrients and
they are the best antioxidants such as blueberries, spinach, carrots,
raspberries, cranberries, blackberries, apricots, plums, grapes, mangoes.
Vegetable oils such as olive oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, and shole grains.

Activity 2
1. As the body ages, it loses its ability to fight the effects of free radicals. The
result is more free radicals, more oxidative stress, and more damage to cells,
which leads to degenerative processes, as well as "normal" aging.
2. A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper
physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to
regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals
thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of
human diseases.
3. To generate energy, our cells remove electrons from sugars, fatty acids and
amino acids and add them to other molecules, especially oxygen. This
creates highly reactive, unstable particles known as free radicals, which
combine quickly with other elements.
4. The excellent sources are lemon, bean, brocolli, etc.
5. One flavonoid called quercetin can help to alleviate eczema, sinusitis,
asthma, and hay fever. Some studies have shown that flavonoid intake is
inversely related to heart disease, with these molecules inhibiting the
oxidation of low-density lipoproteins and therefore reducing the risk of
atherosclerosis developing.
6. Small red bean (dried), Wild blueberries, Red kidney beans (dried), Pinto
beans, Blueberries (cultivated), Cranberries, 1 cup (whole), Artichoke
hearts, Blackberries, Prunes, Raspberries, Strawberries, Red delicious
apples,Granny Smith apples,Pecans.
7. Berries Are Loaded With Antioxidants
Free radicals are unstable molecules that occur as a normal byproduct of
metabolism. It's important to have a small amount of free radicals in your
body to help defend against bacteria and viruses.
Berries May Help Improve Blood Sugar and Insulin Response
Test-tube and human studies suggest they may protect cells from high blood
sugar levels, help increase insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar and
insulin response to high-carb meals.
Berries Are High in Fiber
Berries are a good source of fiber, including soluble fiber. Studies have
shown that consuming soluble fiber slows down the movement of food
through your digestive tract, leading to reduced hunger and increased
feelings of fullness.

Activity 4
Fever is a high temperature of the body. People's normal body temperatures
may vary and are affected by factors such as eating, exercise, sleeping, and what
time of the day it is. Our body temperature is usually at its highest at around 6
p.m. and at its lowest at about 3 a.m.
A high body temperature, or fever, is one of the ways our immune system
attempts to combat an infection. Usually, the rise in body temperature helps the
individual resolve an infection. However, sometimes it may rise too high, in
which case, the fever can be serious and lead to complications.
Doctors say that as long as the fever is mild, there is no need to bring it
down - if the fever is not severe, it is probably helping to neutralize the bacterium
or virus that is causing the infection. Medications to bring down a fever are called
antipyretics. If the fever is causing undue discomfort, an antipyretic may be
recommended.
When a fever reaches or exceeds 38° Centigrade (100.4° Fahrenheit), it is
no longer mild and should be checked every couple of hours.
These temperatures refer to oral measurement, when the thermometer is put
in the mouth. For normal armpit temperatures, the temperature measures lower
than it actually is and the numbers are reduced by about 0.2–0.3° Centigrade.
