The Academy for Global Studies

Fall 2016-Spring 2020
The Academy for Global Studies is a program I have participated in all of my high school career. I applied as a freshman and was
he program embodies community service, integrated classes, focus on language
accepted through a highly competitive process. T
and culture, and travel. The following are some of my most remarkable experiences with the program. Senior year I will travel to
Thailand with a profound emphasis on service and this year will also participate in a semester-long Capstone class creating my
own service project.

TGPLAN Project (10th)

This was by far the most meaningful project I worked on in high school. Each team was assigned a world problem to attempt to
“solve” and my group was assigned sexual harassment. We chose to focus on girl-empowerment and teaching young girls how to
speak up and be safe online. We led two classes at Clint Small Middle School and Kealing Middle School to educate and discuss
relationships with 6th and 7th grade girls. It was very impactful as many girls shared about their own relationship and abuse
struggles.

Costa Rica (10th)

For a week, we studied the environment and culture of Costa Rica. We stayed at Earth University and learned about student
projects to create a more eco-friendly world. We had many cultural experiences including staying with the BriBri indigenous tribe
and learning about their struggles in the developing world. We helped them plant trees and volunteered on a banana plantation.
We also volunteered on farms, “fincas”, aided families in their gardens and farms, and played with their children while they
worked.

Heifer Ranch (9th)

For a week we travelled to Arkansas and participated in a poverty simulation. I was placed in “Africa” as a refugee and given no
food for 2 days. We simulated “begging” for food and participating in low-income farmhand jobs to raise funds to buy food from
the “market.” I was able to experience what living in a developing country would be like.

Walk for Water (9th)

We worked with Gilbert Tuhabonye to raise money to build water wells in Burundi. I located sponsors for each mile of our
“walk” (we walked around Town Lake with heavy water jugs to simulate the same experience in Africa). I learned what it would
be like in another country where water is not easily available.

Southwest New Mexico (11th)

Our focus was on Native American culture in the 21st century. We volunteered at the To'hajiilee Reservation in New Mexico and
led group games with their students. We were able to watch a dance performance, tour the school, and make a traditional dessert
with the staff. I was able to experience an entirely new culture.

Urban Garden Project (9th)

We raised money and built a garden out of recycled materials such as plastic bottles, scrap wood, and orange buckets. 3 other
students and I designed a self watering garden intended for low-income families to produce food easily in Texas. Later we
auctioned it off and donated the money to the Academy.

Upcycle Project (10th)

I was assigned PETE plastic and made a lamp of recycled cups and paper. I later auctioned this off for $30 which I donated to the
Academy. I learned how to design an appliance with recycled materials and the challenge of trial and error.

Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) Project (11th)

For this project, continuing our Native American study, two other students and I attempted to tackle the issue of misrepresentation
of Native Americans in the American media. After researching the issue and presenting it to our class, our final project was
writing a letter to the director of Pocahontas. We expressed our concerns regarding misrepresentation in the film and asked
questions about his motives behind a few scenes.
