Lesson Idea Name: Classifying Triangles


Content Area: Geometry

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.G.CO.10 Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems
include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180 degrees; base angles of isosceles
triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third
side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

The lesson and activity supports the UDL principles because the students are given a creative way to
express their knowledge and learning. They will also be actively engaged in the activity because the
subject will be a topic of their choice. The students are also given a new medium in which to learn and
meet their needs of learning.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students: In this activity, students will be in groups of 3 or 4 to create a video file about a particular
type of triangle classification. Each group will have a different classification so that no one has the
same thing. The video will need to be 30 seconds-1 minute and 30 seconds long, and it needs to
consist of at least 5-10 image and an audio file. Students will have 1 week to complete the project.
Students will be given a rubric in which they will use to make sure they are meeting the guidelines of
the project. Be creative!

Teacher: The teacher will be a resource for students to use as they are working on the project. The
teacher will also provide websites and tools to the students to help them be successful during this
project. Teacher is welcomed to provide feedback to students during the creating process, but the
project is student-led.

Importance of technology:

The multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project because the students are developing their
learning of not only content but also how to be creative with technology that will help to grow them,
and they will be able to use those skills later on in the education career. This particular project would
not be able to be completed without technology because it is a technology-based project since the
students are creating videos. Without using technology, there will be a lack of students not being able
to develop their creative skills through the use of technology, and they won’t be able to develop those
skills that they will gain through using the technology.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

An issue that could arise while implementing the lesson surrounding Internet safety and student
privacy is that there may be some images, videos, or audio that is not appropriate for the students to
use and students may need to provide information to create accounts or identify themselves as creators
of their products. To alleviate these issues, students will be provided specific sites that they can use to
find resources, provided how to search for resources, parents and administration will be informed
about the project, and students will be given tools to protect their privacy such as using a pseudonym
for their creator name.

Reflective Practice:

I think that the activities created will impact student learning because it is something different from
doing a poster-board project. Students are given the opportunity to interact with technology that
revolves around them.
