Questions :
1. What this curriculum ?
2. Why as the student of teacher candidate, I need to learn about Material Development (MD)?

Answer :

1. The curriculum is a set of subjects and educational programs provided by an educational organizing
institution that contains the design of lessons that will be given to participants in a period of education.
The preparation of these subject matter units is adjusted to the circumstances and capabilities of each
level of education in the implementation of education and employment needs. The length of time in a
curriculum is usually adjusted to the aims and objectives of the education system implemented. This
curriculum is intended to be able to direct education towards the direction and purpose intended in the
overall learning activities.
According to Soedijarto, the curriculum is a series of experiences and learning activities that
are planned to be overcome by students in order to achieve the learning goals set by an authorized
educational institution. As for Indonesia, in Law No.20 of 2003 article 1 paragraph (19), the constitution
states that the curriculum is a set of plans and arrangements regarding the purpose, content and material
of learning and the methods used to guide the implementation of learning activities to achieve certain
educational goals. Furthermore, Article 36 paragraph (3) states that the curriculum is prepared in
accordance with the levels and types of education within the framework of the Unitary State of the
Republic of Indonesia by taking into account:
a. increased faith and piety;
b. increase in noble character;
c. increasing the potential, intelligence, and interests of students;
d. diversity of regional and environmental potential;
e. demands for regional and national development;
f. the demands of the world of work;
g. the development of science, technology and art;
h. religion;
i. dynamics of global development; and
j. national unity and national values

In My opinion, the curriculum is an experience or learning activity that has been planned for students in
order to achieve the learning goals set by official educational institutions.

2. Teacher Education provides a platform to student-teachers to acquire the required knowledge, skill and
develop positive attitude, values and beliefs. This can be done with the help of the provided curriculum.
And the quality of teacher produced in any institution invariably depends on the curriculum offered to
them during their training period. After reviewing various researches on the curriculum and significant
role of teachers’ in framing the curriculum the process of curriculum development was decentralized.
The process of curriculum framing and preparation of textbooks be decentralized so as to increase
teachers’ involvement in these tasks. Decentralization should mean greater autonomy within the
state/district. As curriculum is the best mean of overall development of students. And teacher is mediator
between curriculum and students. She/he knows various needs of students, educational institutions,
industries, parents (stakeholders).
The quality of teacher education is maintained by curriculum of Teacher Education. The curriculum
development is dynamic process. The paper will dealt with the following objectives such as:
a. To explain the curriculum development process.
b. To explain the role of the teacher as curriculum developer.
c. To communicates the best practices in the context of curriculum development.
