Applying Laws of System thinking to study Trade War

B19012

Small changes can produce big results – but the areas of

highest leverage are often the least obvious.
The Lobster Problem
Take the case of prices of lobsters in China in the ongoing trade war
between the US and China. The Chinese government imposed a
25% tariff on US lobsters in July 2018, but at the same time lowered
the tariffs on Canadian Lobsters by 3%. As a result, there is a sharp
drop of 70% in the US lobsters export, but Canadian lobster exports
to China doubled. At the same time, Chinese consumers are paying
less for the lobster sourced primarily from the same waters.

Assessing Morality of the Decision of B19055

levying Sanctions and its consequences

● Economic sanctions were levied on China with an intention to keep
their aggressive economic behaviour in check.
● It was done in order to position the domestic players in the US
market at a point of strategic advantage..
● US believed that these sanctions would curb China’s unfair trade
practices which would directly have a positive effect on the pockets
of the US citizens

Judging solely on the basis of the

consequences and the overarching
effects of the sanctions, it severely
hampered the industries on which it was
imposed thus affecting the prices of the
products on the consumer level, hugely
affecting the weaker sections of the society
