Christian Civic Responsibility

We at Chapelwood believe that civil government is necessary and divinely ordained by God.
Our government has been given three political responsibilities by its citizens: 1. to mete out
justice and to punish criminals, 2. to maintain order and to thwart rebellion, and 3. to defend the
state by war if necessary.

As citizens of this great country of America, we Christians have been given a number of
responsibilities. We are called to give service and obedience to our government, inasmuch as
it does not interfere with our obedience to God.

Christians have a responsibility to work within governmental structures to bring about

change. Our right to vote is of utmost importance, and we should never neglect to pray for our
country and its leaders. Having a Christian world view, being involved politically, and seeking
reform are legitimate means of Christian service. "The only thing necessary for the triumph
of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

As Americans, we "stand on the shoulder's of giants". Most of our founding fathers were
great men of God who fully intended that our federal, state and local governments be based on
Christian principles.

"Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers and it is the duty as well
as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for
their rulers." The Honorable John Jay, original Chief Justice of the US Supreme
Court

"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality
are indispensable supports. In vein would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who
should labor to subvert these great pillars. Let us with caution indulge the supposition
that morality can be maintained without religion." President George Washington, 1796
farewell address

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and a religious people. It is wholly
inadequate to the government of any other." President John Adams
