UNIT:2

1. SCRs with a rating of 1000V and 200 A are available to be used in a string to handle

6kV and 1kA. Calculate the number of series and parallel units required in case derating

factor is (a) 0.1 and (b) 0.2 .

2. It is required to operate 250 A SCR in parallel with 350 A SCR with their respective

on-state voltage drops of 1.6V and 1.2V. Calculate the value of resistance to be inserted

in series with each SCR so that they share the total load of 600A in proportion to their

current ratings.

3. A relaxation oscillator using an UJT is to be designed for triggering an SCR. The UJT

has the following data:

Intrinsic stand-off ratio=0.72, Ip=0.6 mA , Vp= 18 V , Vv= 1 V, Iv= 2.5

mA , RBB=5 kΩ, Normal leakage current with emitter open= 4.2 mA.

4. If the firing frequency of the SCR in Q.3 is changed by varying charging resistance R,

obtain the maximum and minimum values of R and the Corresponding frequencies.

1. A single phase 230 V, 1kW heater is connected across 1-phase, 230V , 50 Hz supply
through an SCR. For firing angle delay of 45˚ and 90˚, Calculate the power absorbed in
the heater element.
2. A single phase transformer , with secondary voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz, delivers power
to load R=10Ω through a half wave controlled rectifier circuit. For a firing angle delay
of 60˚, determine
(a) The rectification efficiency.
(b) Form factor.
(c) Voltage ripple factor
(d) Transformer Utilization factor
(e) PIV of thyristor
3. A single phase full converter bridge is connected to RLE load. The source voltage is
230V, 50 Hz. The average load current of 10 A is constant over the working range. For
R=0.4Ω and L= 2 mH, Compute
(a) Firing angle delay for E= 120 V
(b) Firing angle delay for E= -120 V
Indicate which source is delivering power to load in parts (a) and (b). Sketch the
time variations of output voltage and load current for both parts (a) and (b).
(c) In case output current is assumed constant , find the input pf for both parts (a) and
(b).

(a) A 3 phase full converter charges a battery from a three phase supply
of 230V, 50 Hz. The battery emf is 200 V and its internal resistance is
0.5Ω. On account of inductance connected in series with the battery,
charging current is constant at 20A. Compute the firing angle delay
and the supply power factor.
(b) In case it is desired that power flows from dc source to ac load in
part(a), find the firing angle delay for the same current.
5. A single phase full converter is supplied from 230 V, 50 Hz source. The load consist of
R=10Ω and a large inductance so as to render the load current constant. For a firing
angle delay of 30˚, determine
(a) Average output voltage
(b) Average output current
(c) Average and rms values of thyristor currents and
(d) The power factor.

(a) A 3-phase semiconverter feeds power to a resistive load of 10Ω. For a firing angle delay
of 30˚, the load takes 5 kW. Find the magnitude of per phase input supply voltage.
(b) Repeat part(a) in case load current is made ripple free by connecting an inductor in
series with load.
2. A 3 phase semi converter charges a battery from a three phase supply
of 230V, 50 Hz. The battery emf is 200 V and its internal resistance is
0.5Ω. On account of inductance connected in series with the battery,
charging current is constant at 20A. Compute the firing angle delay
and the supply power factor.
3. A single phase semiconverter is supplied from 230V, 50 Hz source. The load consists
of R=10Ω, E= 100 V and a large inductance so as to render the load current level. For
a firing angle of 30˚, determine
(a) Average output voltage
(b) Average output current
(c) Average and rms values of thyristor currents
(d) Average and rms values of diode currents
(e) Input pf and
(f) Circuit turn-off time
4. A 3-phase full converter bridge is connected to supply voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. The
source inductance is 4 mH. The load current on dc side is constant at 20 A. If the load
consist of a dc source of internal emf 400 V with internal resistance of 1Ω, then
calculate:
(a) Firing angle delay and
(b) Overlap angle in degrees.
5. A 3-phase M-3 converter, fed from 3-phase, 400 V , 50 Hz supply, has a load R=1Ω,
E=230 V and large so that load current of 15 A is level.
(a) Calculate the firing angle for inverter operation.
(b) If source has an inductance of 4 mH, find the firing angle delay and overlap angle
of the inverter.

1. For type-A chopper , dc source voltage=230 V, load resistance=10Ω. Take a voltage


drop of 2V across chopper when it is on. For a duty cycle of 0.4, Calculate
(a) Average and rms values of output voltage and
(b) Chopper efficiency.
2. A step up chopper has input voltage of 220 V and output voltage of 600 V. If the
conducting time of thyristor-chopper is 100 µs, compute the pulse width of output
voltage.
In case output voltage pulse width is halved for constant frequency operation , find
the average value of new output voltage.
3. The buck regulator has an input voltage of Vs= 12 V. The required average output
voltage is Va= 5 V and the peal-to-peak output ripple voltage is 20 mV. The switching
frequency is 25 kHz. If the peak-to-peak ripple current of inductor is limited to 0.8 A,
determine
(a) The duty cycle k,
(b) The filter inductance L, and
(c) The filter capacitor C.
4. The boost regulator has an input voltage of Vs= 5 V. The average output voltage Va=
15 V and average load current Ia= 0.5 A. The switching frequency is 25 kHz. If L=150
µH and C= 220 µF, determine
(a) The duty cycle k,
(b) The ripple current of inductor ∆I,
(c) The peak current of inductor I2, and
(d) The ripple voltage of filter capacitor ∆Vc.

supply is applied to this combination, the voltage across the resistance and choke coil are
200 V and 300 V respectively. Calculate(i) Resistance and inductance of the choke coil,
(ii) Total impedance and resistance of the circuit.(iii) Power absorbed by the coil and
circuit.

Q.12 A non-inductive resistor, a choke coil and a loss less capacitor are connected in series
across 50 Hz single phase supply. The current in the circuit is 1 Amp and the voltage
across the resistance, choke coil and capacitor are 25 V, 40 V and 55 V respectively. The
voltage across resistance and choke coil is 50V. Determine (i) the value of resistance, (ii)
choke coil resistance and choke coil inductance, (iii) capacitance, (iv) supply voltage, (v)
power factor of the circuit.
