Charles Bazerman Significant Thoughts

Article Speech Acts, Genres, and Activity System: How Texts Organize Activity and

People Written by Charles Bazerman. Charles Bazerman is a widely published scholar of writing

and the teaching of writing, he serves as Professor in the Department of Education at the

University of California. Bazerman talks about different types of genres like genre sets and

genre systems and about social facts.

There are different types of genres that Charles Bazerman explains in the article like

Genre Set that is the collection of types of texts someone in a particular role is likely to produce

and an example of that can be like the government of Panama or any other country because it

relies on other people to make it work or even make everything happen. There is the second

one that is called Genre System that captures the regular sequences of how one genre follows

on another in the typical communication flows of a group of people and an example of that is an

email that I send to my friend.

Charles Bazerman explains how social facts work and how there are used, Social Facts

are those things people believe to be true and that causes them to keep up on how they define

a situation, People then act as though these facts were true. An example of this is like in a

society many groups tend to have the same ideas toward marriage like at what age they should

get married and how their wedding should look like and what should it have and what they

shouldn’t have.
 I agree with Charles Bazerman because what he says is true like the way he expresses

his thoughts connects to what I am thinking. Everything he says I have had a personal

experience that makes me think that everything Bazerman tries to say is true. Charles

Bazerman once said “The more you understand about writing, the better you can engage

people in it.”

Charles Bazerman explains how types of genres and social facts are used and what they

are, and he couldn’t have explained them in a better way or well that is what I think. Bazerman

has contributed significantly to the establishment of writing as a research field and that means

that what he says should make some kind of sense.
