Causes and Effects of Divorce

Divorce is the end of a marriage. When a family is experiencing this, then their life will be
different than before especially couples who already have children. Based on data from the
Directorate General of religious Justice of the Supreme Court in the period 2014-2016 divorce
in Indonesia has indeed increased. 344,237 of divorce in 2014, rising to 365,633 divorce in
2016. The average divorce rate up 3 percent per a year. Divorce would cause various things
especially on the child.
Divorce occurs due to several factors:
First financial problems. Financial is something that must be prioritized especially if
someone has a family. This financial problem is the main reason for a couple to divorce.
Second, Married in adolescence or early marriage. Based on the research of married
couples during adolescence or under the age of 20th have a high risk of experiencing divorce.
Third, Husbands do not have permanent jobs, Researchers in a study published by the
American Sociological Review say the stigma that men are the main breadwinners of a family
can affect household stability. So if the husband does not have a permanent job, the household
can be problematic.
Fourth, Appearance. This problem is often experienced by the wife. The husband
always wants to see his wife beautiful and fragrant. This is often the reason for the husband's
divorce from his wife.
Fifth, the affair is one factor in divorce. Infidelity can be caused because they are not
satisfied with their partner.
Sixth, Problematic sex life. Indeed, Sex is a necessity in the household, if the sex life of
one partner is problematic it will cause cracks in the household.
Seventh, Have a different vision. Before marriage, usually couples will talk about the
vision of marriage, sometimes there are couples who do not talk about this, so when they are
married have a different vision.
Eighth, Violence. This is usually experienced by the wife. Often husbands commit
violence because they cannot control their emotions.
Ninth, No respect to the couples. There is a case where divorce occurs because of this.
Usually this is experienced by husbands who have the wives of career women. These career
women sometimes underestimate their husbands.
 Tenth, Low education, a long-term survey conducted since 1979 by the National
Longitudinal Survey of Youth, mentions that couples do not graduate at the high school level,
facing the same pattern of divorce. The researcher considers that the low level of education will
affect family income. Because, those who do not graduate from high school tend to find it
harder to find work. So that making household needs difficult to meet, and happy marriage is
difficult to achieve.
Eleventh, Husband or wife's parents. Parents sometimes interfere with their children's
household problems. This causes disputes between husband and wife. This is mostly
experienced by couples who live in one house with parents. After marriage sometimes, couples
do not have a home, so they decide to stay in the parents' house. The husband's parents
sometimes like to arrange their children's wives, this makes the wife uncomfortable and feels
unappreciated by her husband's family. Many wives feel depressed when they live in one house
with their husbands' parents, they feel afraid. This problem sometimes causes divorce.
This's some of the factors that cause divorce. In a psychological study conducted by E. Mavis
Hetherington of the University of Virginia and graduate student Anne Mitchell Elmore, most
children experience the short-term negative effects of divorce. When his parents have just
divorced, generally children will experience anxiety, anger, shock, and distrust. Divorce also has
an effect especially on children. this effect cannot be underestimated because the
consequences are fatal. the following are some of the effects of divorce parents’ bad impact on
children.
First, Academic decline. According to several studies, children who are victims of
divorce often experience behavioral problems which then adversely affect their academic
abilities.
Second, Divorce. Divorce often causes the child to be depressed because his family will
not be the same as before, when their parents divorced, they feel confused about who they will
live with? Father or mother?
Third, Child welfare. If parents do not provide welfare to children after divorce this will
cause the child to be abandoned. Children will experience anxiety, anger, and financial
shortages because their parents do not provide welfare. Children who experience this usually
come from lower-middle class families. Parents whose economies are middle to lower will find
it difficult to provide welfare to their children.
Fourth, Children become stubborn. This is because of the divorce of his parents. The
child will vent his disappointment by being a stubborn child. Sometimes children become
stubborn when their parents’ divorce just to get attention from their parents.
Fifth, Get caught up in promiscuity. When parents’ divorce, children will face the
problem of "choosing a father or mother?" but when parents don't want their children, or
parents who remarry with others, the child will feel unwanted and decide to leave home. When
parents’ divorce and remarry, many of them will leave their children to start a new life with
their new husband or wife. The child they leave behind will be confused and eventually caught
up in promiscuity. Free association is a form of deviant behavior that crosses the boundaries of
obligations, demands, rules, conditions, and feelings of shame. or free association can be
interpreted as deviant behavior that violates religious norms and moral norms. When a child is
caught up in promiscuity it will be very difficult to return. Free association will cause a bleak
future. Broken home children are prone to experience this because of a lack of parental
attention.
Sixth, Children’s mental health was shaken. When a parent decides to divorce, the child
is usually mentally shaken. Both during the divorce process and after the mental divorce the
child will be shaken. They are sad because their parents separated. There is a child who has a
mental disorder caused by seeing his parents fight in front of him. Children who are mentally
shaken will usually do things that don't make sense. Mental health is very important. Children
will drag in sadness.
Seventh, the way of thinking is disturbed. The way of thinking that can be disturbed is
the subsequent impact felt by the children when their father and mother divorced. The way of
thinking here is that the child loses his sympathy or empathy, cares, is rude, behaves
emotionally and other things. It could be that at first the child is intelligent but being a child
with poor development, everything happens because of pressure as a child who is broken
home.
Eighth, Prolonged trauma is the biggest impact that will occur on children. The memory
that parents fight, anger, and also vent things sad to the family makes a child traumatized and
fearful in any case. According to them, the scary thing certainly starts from the family, and it
can even become a trauma to his own father or mother.
Ninth, Apathetic to relationships. Divorce can lead to prolonged trauma for children or
those who already understand what relationships are. traumatized children they become
people who feel apathetic about a relationship and assume that relationships are not important
because seeing what their parents experience fails and he considers that he will do the same.
So that apathy becomes one of the big effects.
Tenth, Suicide, this is the most terrible effect of divorce. Many cases of children commit
suicide because their parents divorced. For example, the case of Rebecca Sedwick. 12-year-old
Rebecca Sedwick decided to end her own life after her parents’ divorce. The divorce case
caused Rebbecca to live with her mom who is single mom and lack of economic conditions,
causing the home environment to fall apart and cause stress.
Divorce is sometimes unavoidable by couples. Divorce is a nightmare for children. No child
wants his parents to divorce. The effects caused by divorce especially on children are very
dangerous, but it depends on the parents and the people around them. When divorced,
parents still have to pay attention to their children even though they live separately. Don't let
the child lack attention. When parents remarry, parents must continue to pay attention to their
children and not to lose responsibility and be busy with their new family, this is to prevent the
adverse effects caused by divorce.
